"Eternity is a mere moment, just long enough for a joke."
Hermann Hesse
This thread reeks of emptiness... I mean, you know, in life. Surround yourself with over-priced clothes to feel better! That's fashion.
What? I spent last summer volunteering in Zambia and Botswana, working on building projects and delivering supplies. Instead of merchandise, I will only buy donation vouchers as Christmas gifts. I spend most of my free time reading books (esp. DFW, Wittgenstein, Hesse, Camus and Sartre) and debating moral, semantical and aesthetic philosophy with my friends. I also enjoy spending my money on clothing that I perceive to be good looking. But my fulfillment is not contingent on the procurement of material objects, it is the result of my constant efforts to empathize and learn from my fellow human beings.
I am happy, fulfilled and take responsibility for all of my actions. Why do you feel the need to lash out at me? Maybe it's not me who is empty.

Why spend $300 on a jacket to impress someone when you can impress someone for FREE with words.
Because you know, you'd actually have to think for that.
I'm sorry that you have such a dim opinion of me. Of course, it is alright for people to spend countless thousands on expensive cars when a cheap car (or even a bike!) is more than enough. I chose to spend my money on different things, no need to attack me for it! :smile.gif:

Told.
Gettin' some new Vans this weekend, probably these:
^nice! I always keep a pair of Vans around, they're really versatile and still look decent after months of abuse.

Don't take it as a personal attack, i totally agree that it is okay to spend however much you want on your clothes, it was more of light humor.
I don't spend my money to be honest, i have it saved up, till i need it.

Yea, I thought you were probably just kidding around, it's cool.
Fashion (especially expensive fashion) has connotations of excess, shallowness, insecurity and greed. This is valid, but this is also a case of the worst representatives simply being the loudest. I belong to an online clothing community, and the people there are some of the most compassionate, culturally sensitive and moral people I know, with most of them currently donating 10% of their sales to aid efforts in Japan.
I buy clothing not to compensate for shallowness, but to compliment my personality.
I respect your ability to save though, thats not something I'm good at :tongue.gif:

Showing off how much you care about the downtrodden demonstrates that you care more about your image than you care about actually helping people. Humility is the way to glory.

You know, rather than give a gift that means something, impose your ideals on others. That'd really get on my nerves, honestly. If you're going to use a gift as a way to preach, better not to give one at all.

That's not fashion, then. That's personal taste. Following fashion means eating up whatever the trends are in an attempt to "fit in" above those who don't.

Fashion is vanity. I did not mean to provoke - only to make a statement. Your response, however, has demonstrated your vanity, your obsession with your image in the eyes of others.
Quit being a god damn ***** and go flame somewhere else.
Also, who makes good hoodies? Right now I have a Jack & Jones one, black on base colour with white writing on the front and a blue inside for the hood & pully-things to make the hood tight. It's a year or so old and I need a new one..
Just ignore him.
What price range? Also, what is your "build"? e.g. Tall, short, skinny, big etc.

Thank you for the advice, but I wasn't worried about my image. I was just explaining that my interests also involve helping others.

A way to preach? No, I just think it's a nice gift to buy. But I couldn't imagine someone getting upset over this, regardless of any ulterior motives. People in need will be glad for the livestock and school supplies these vouchers provide, and this makes me feel good, and it makes others feel good. This is why I buy these. Call it whatever you want. And for the record, when 1 out of 5 children in Zambia will starve to death before the age of 5, I think it's an ideal worth imposing.

The only "modern-day intellectual" I mentioned is DFW and even he, like the others, is dead. Once again, I was just trying to refute the idea that I'm this vapid philistine who hides behind expensive clothing. I now realize that I sounded a bit pretentious, but I honestly wasn't trying to make myself out to be some sort of genius. I'm of average intelligence, and I really enjoy philosophy. My thoughts are probably no deeper than anyone else's.

The person you're describing is a fashion victim. They buy whatever is in season, flip flop between styles, and blow huge amounts of money on whatever the prominent blogs tell them to buy. I have a certain look that I'm comfortable with; a button-down shirt, slim fitting, dark indigo jeans and a pair of white leather sneakers. I buy from thrift stores, I never wear logos and I don't brand-*****. I follow fashion insofar as it offers new variations on particular types of clothing that I buy.

I freely admit that I care about how others perceive me, and I'm not ashamed of this. I admire physical beauty, but I do not worship it. If my life was devoted to reaching this ideal beauty, I would be wasting my life on something that will always be just out of reach. I prefer to enjoy the beauty I can have, and devote my energy to the people around me. If you can forgive another DFW reference, I think he says it best: "The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day." I think this is the only ideal worth pursuing. Beauty is something I will enjoy while I have it, and when the time comes I'll let it go peacefully.
I don't mind continuing this discussion, but I'd prefer to start a new thread or something.
And thank you for your opinions, they made me stop and think. I feel good now :smile.gif:

I don't really have a style... I wear tailored suits because I can though. My normal day clothing is pretty much wrangler jeans, work boots, and a t-shirt because I work outside a lot in my spare time. Wearing nice clothes kind of fades away after the age of 25 (well it did for me).

If you're willing to spend a bit more, Ever makes a great hoodie:
http://www.revolveclothing.com/DisplayProduct.jsp?product=EVER-MO130&c=Ever&d=b&referrerURL=%2FBrands.jsp%3Fc%3DEver%26d%3DMens&
I had one in green, really comfortable. $110, but 20% off if you enter "STYLEWATCH20" at checkout.
The thing is, I just realized that it's "imported"(presumably from Asia), so the manufacturing conditions are dubious. You can try to contact them via their website, but I doubt they'll reveal much :sad.gif:
Apliiq is also great brand, and they make everything by hand in downtown LA (no guarantee of ethical conditions, but it's better than nothing)
