This is not a new idea. A classic argument by pirates is that they are just "demoing" a game and will totally buy it if they like it. And while it is most certainly true that every pirated, or even most pirated versions of a game, book, or other entity do not represent lost sales, some do. Maybe one day, we will all live in a world where content is generated by people paid on stipends handed out by nonbiased arbiters, but as it is now, people need to get paid for thier work by consumers. If a producer chooses to view pirated versions as marketing costs in the way Gaimin is describing, that's completely thier right, but it is not your right to decide that for them.

So, yeah. Minecraft is kind of like walking into a high-class auction with top security and a solid reputation only to find out that everyone else in the room is a mugger. Who explodes.
While it is true that many people I know who currently use a pirated copy of Minecraft because they can't buy it for whatever reason (card won't work overseas, funds are tight, ect), I know still many others who simply never want to pay for it - or any software they've stolen, be it Minecraft or Sony Vegas. They want to live the life of a freeloader and I, for one, believe that is wrong.
Piracy is never "right." Treating pirated games like demos is like stealing an expensive gadget from an electronics store with the supposed intent of returning later and paying for it. How many do you think actually DO pay for it?

Not alike at all. When you pirate a game, it is debatable whether or not you are stealing anything because nobody loses anything.
And, actually, many people pay for it later if they like and respect the game and who makes it.
I saw this on TechDirt today. Great video. (I highly recommend TD to anyone interested in the topic of "intellectual property").

You don't have to wait! Content producers can get paid even now while making "free" a core part of their business model.
Pirate's shouldn't pirate something from an Indie developer.
For what it's worth, I agree (given that the person in question could pay for it).
I enjoy the game and I want to see Notch continue to develop it and perhaps make new games in the future, so I pay. This is not a moral issue, however, as some people want to frame it; it's simply self-interest on my part.
OP from the Pirate thread. Pirate's shouldn't pirate something from an Indie developer. I'm very dissapointed.
I am not glorifying it at all, I am just showing the other side, because nobody ever seems to see it.
By the way, I have not pirated the game.
This is a Minecraft forum. Your thread MUST be related to Minecraft otherwise I will report this thread for being offtopic. Sorry for being such a douche but rules are rules.
It is related to Minecraft, because there is almost always a thread on the first page talking about how someone pirated minecraft.
I honestly don't see anything wrong with piracy. Developers still make tons of money whether something is pirated or not. They may not make as much money as they could, but they still make more money then they need.

And you know this, how, may I ask? It's a huge stereotype to say that all developers are rich, or that all developers make a lot of money. Are you a developer? Have you ever developed software? Have you ever spoken with a developer?

Oh, so now you are the unilateral assessor of need? And I take it you NEED Minecraft or any other game? You need the game as much as they need the money.
We live in a capitalist society driven by a consumer market. If you think that is bad, do something to change it, but don't be an entitled douche and claim you have the right to steal things because you want to.

I'm not a pirate hater, I download programs and games all the time. I do hate MC pirates though, and all other indie games. It's those money-hungry corporations that you should steal from...

I don't think my point was understood. I don't need MineCraft, or anything for that matter. But if we only bought stuff because we needed them, no one would buy anything except food and water and clothes, etc.
But back to the main topic. Piracy isn't stealing, because it doesn't make anyone lose anything. And don't say "It makes them lose the sale", because that's BS. Every second you don't buy a product, you make someone lose a sale. That's hardly stealing. Piracy isn't parasitism. It's commensalism.
I pirated Minecraft. Don't tell me how to live my life, I'll do whatever I want, thank you very much.
You probably love Minecraft because you made a Minecraftforum account. And still you don't support the developer.
Very sad.
My money is my own; why should anyone else have it? A verse from the Hebrew and Christian Bible even supports this:
Proverbs 5:16-17
Should your springs flow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares? They should be for you alone and not for you to share with strangers.

I love how people seem to think that if you pirate a game, nobody loses anything. Games and other software are products that cost money to design, test, and distribute. The consumer repays that by purchasing a product. If you're not paying for that, who is?
If you obtain a product at no cost through illegitimate means, that's stealing. In cyberspace or elsewhere. Ask any law professional, ask any judge, they'll say the same thing.
I'll never understand why people get so fired up over piracy. Just cause you ***** about it, doesn't mean anything will happen, every pirate will continue being a pirate. I would understand if you're mad if someone stole YOUR creation, one you've worked for a lot and sacrificed much while working on it, but the only person who can be mad about people pirating minecraft right now is Notch. And I believe he said that he's ok with it...
If someone pirates minecraft... good on him, you will follow your 'silly' principles and buy the thing and feel good about yourselves. I don't get why you don't, though.
Indeed. Trolling on an internet forum asking for change about something is as useless as making a house out of TNT. I glad someone has brought a of logic to us. Thank you, good sir.
An interesting video, and a different way to look at pirating.

Problem?
I used a pirated version for about 2 days, then I bought it.
Sorry 'bout that; I really needed to get that off my chest…
Clicks would be much appreciated

Obviously Pirating helped advertise the game.
Then I bought it.
