They aren't, the zombie idea popped up because guilt free violence is always fun. A virus that turned you feral and removed the idea of pain from you IS possible, but unlikely. Zombies could exist, but a virus that can only be spread via bodily fluid would die out almost immediately if it turned the carrier into a hideous freak. (HIV is concealable, and many people don't know they are positive, you would know if you were a zombie)

After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.
I think it's assumed that the person will run away and hide, where they will then become the zombie. Kind of like in Resident Evil 2 (the movie) where the people get taken by surprise in the streets and get bitten, but manage to get away only to become a zombie not long after.
OK, that is a possibility. But assuming the first person bitten is in public when bitten (or even a person early in the chain) most people would stay away from the person/call the cops/restrain him and try really hard to not get bitten. The person would quickly be diagnosed with rabies and treatment administered. End of movie....or game.
OR, the first person bitten has an actual brain, they run to the hospital, the wound is tested for a variety of things, rabies shows up, he is treated, or quarantined until a treatment exists/he dies. Again, end of movie.
I love zombie movies as much as the next guy, but to think something like that could happen in real life is absurd. There are real viruses out there that could cover the world in days and kill in hours. You want an apocalypse? THAT is your apocalypse.
It is rather simple, RABIES COULD MUTATE/EVOLVE.
Right now, rabies victims only become zombies for the last one hour before death, because rabies kills they quickly, but what if rabies did not kill them, but kept them alive for as long as it can find food and water. This would create a zombie, and potentially, a zombie apocalypse.
Read about the common occurrence of people infected becoming terrified of water, and having extreme pain upon swallowing water. It's hard to stay alive without water.
There are many viruses that can alter a behavior. It may not make you believe or think something, but it can cause you to do certain basic actions by releasing the right chemicals in your brain. A prime example of this is a certain species of parasite/worm that lives in grasshoppers. When it's old enough to live in water it releases a chemical in the grasshopper's brain making it suicidal, which makes it jump into a body of water and drown, releasing the worm to it's new home. Look it up.

Hello? Eat my tarts? In this cosmic dance of bursting decadence, withheld permissions twist all our arms collectively. But if sweetness can win- and it can- then I'll still be here tomorrow to high five you yesterday my friend. Peace.

You're right, getting the infection started would be difficult. It would almost need to be airborne... almost. >:smile.gif: How about this? It is first spread deliberately by someone via anthrax-size particles into the air. Once it gets into people's bodies, the virus starts the reaction. It can't simply hop a ride back into the air, though; blood-blood would be most zombie-like.

Agreed, it could mutate. But to get from the rabies we have now to something that makes zombies would require a **** load of mutations to happen, and to either happen all at once, or undiscovered by medicine.
You should also clarify which kind of zombies. The newer, faster ones (28 Days/Weeks Later, the recent remakes of the Living Dead series) or the older, slower ones (original Night of the Living Dead, original Dawn of the Dead, or even the (Tony Todd) remake of Night of the Living Dead from '92).
The newer, faster ones are a bit easier to explain scientifically, up until you get into the gorefest "zombie baby" and "petri dish zombie fetus" (and the even more unlikely living zombie head)...
Zombie survivalists will be the first to tell you that the point of this all is to provide an entertaining component to real life preparedness. It's boring, or even scary, preparing for a hurricane, epidemic, economic disaster or war, but preparing for a zombie apocalypse is fun. I can't imagine anyone actually buying into this stuff.
Zombies aren't logical. You also said so in the Title but then you say that they are.
Mod Edit: Don't eat radioactive carrots.
