So, once I get out of high school, I plan on enacting a get-rich-quick/get-super-famous life through acting in Hollywood.
Now when that doesn't work, I plan on joining the Marines.
However I have heard that we may/already have, stop/stopped sending troops to the countries of Iraq and Afghanistan, and we'll/webe/are slowly taking them out. Since I don't plan on joining for a year or two, I will not likely see action in those countries.
Now, I was wondering, what are some countries that we send troops to primarily?
Also how is it like over there?
Any suggestions?
I am in the USAF currently as an E-3 thanks to my college credits. Once i finish my BA I'll become an O-1.
As for the Marines, it is almost 100% guaranteed that you will be sent over seas to a war zone of somekind. Although Obama and company may be pulling some soldiers out of Iraq, just a little bit ago he renewed our assault against Afghanistan. So you can be sure that if you join the Marines you will be doing 2- 3 tours over in Afghanistan minimum: maybe not seeing any action, but just being there to keep the peace.
The Marine recruiters will promise you the world however. they will tell you everything you want to hear because it gets them more money. So be ready for the time of your life in Marine Basic, my brother went through Marine basic and some of those stories are just nuts.
As for countries we send too, there is a chance that you could be sent to South Korea, Okinawa, Germany, or somewhere in the states. Wherever they want to send you. I don't think you have much choice in the matter.
My friend was stationed in Kuwait during his tour and he said that it is a sandbox that will cook you dead if you're not careful. They had forced hydration about 7 times a day because of the heat. He also said that the locals although friendly sometimes smell awful.
my suggestion if you join the Marines: be prepared for everything they didn't tell you, and expect that what they did tell you won't happen
I wan't to go to Afghanistan though, that's the thing. At least something in the Middle East.
However something with high tension like South Korea, or something in Africa would be cool too.
You can certainly volunteer for crap like that too. they love volunteers. so just say you want to go to X place and if it is a war zone I'm pretty sure they'll gladly send you over there.

Well we stopped sending troops to Iraq right?
I don't think we're even allowed to let volunteers go there, are we?
My granddad was in the Vietnamise war, if I remember correctly. He kept his rifle right above the fireplace. He was the best goddamn granddad I know of. Like, for serious. He was a real role model.
When I was 5, he helped me take out my first loose tooth and introduced me to a buncha foods I hadn't liked previously. This was on the fourth of July. I saw him give a 21-Gun Salute on the same day.
Then, when I was six, he died of cancer. I miss that *******.

I am NOT going to see friend requests, so stop sending them.
We are pulling out of Iraq, but not Afghanistan. In all likelihood, that's where you'll end up. Of course, there is a chance that you wind up getting stationed on some foreign military base in one of our various allied countries. It really depends on your MOS and how badly your MOS is needed in Afghanistan. While we're on the subject of MOS's, I suggest taking one that will teach you a skill that you can use in the work place after your service is up. You sound pretty gun-ho, so don't take this the wrong way, but you really shouldn't be hoping to get placed in the ****. Real wars aren't like call of duty or Bad company 2. The reality is that if you run out there hoping to be the next Rambo, and you get picked off by an insurgent, or fragged by an IED, that's it. There are no respawns. To the government, you are just another statistic at that point, especially with Obama as Commander in Chief. I don't mean to discourage you from going infantry if that's really what you want to do. In fact, if that's what you decide on, I wish you the best. I hope you look at it from a realistic standpoint though. Some advice though if you do decide to go infantry: Move out of Cali, and by an AR-15 and a Beretta 92fs. Practice with both as much as you can. If your roll is going to be primarily shooting, don't wait until basic training to learn how to do so. Become proficient before hand.

I've had a mix of interpretations about the USA military for myself.
My dad's dad, was in the Navy, and he got great opportunities out of it, and helped developed the earliest form of heat-seaking missiles, he was stationed right off of Naples during WWII.
My mom's dad, was in the Army, and he got a Purple heart, this added to his many hardships in life, and while he was never alive when I was alive, I find that his last years of life were very dreadful, the military adding to his problems.
My dad's brother, was in the Army, and he was arrested for a military crime of which he did not commit in Vietnam, after a few years he was released when they found out he didn't do it, and now he's a hippie/vagrant who despises society.
So yah, I know that the military isn't fun and games, but that's not what I want, I wan't something to actually happen in my life, instead of hiding inside of a box for the remainder of it.
Great-grandfather on my Japanese side fought in Europe during WWII, while my great-grandmother was in a camp.
Grandfather on my Vietnamese side lived in South Vietnam during the war. He was a Communist "sympathizer" and was wounded and rescued by Americans. Decided to move here after the war and hated the place until he died.
Step-father's family is majority military. He was in the Air Force, so we moved around quite a bit.

We sang: "I don't know where we go from here"
That is the anthem, the slogan, the summary of events
I'm not in the military but depending on how things goes with paying for college... I might go to Air force or Air National Guard (129th Rescue Wing). I can't say I would like to kill folks because I'm mostly a pacifist. So... Rescue Wing for me. Got to do something when natural emergency strike or when some folks need saving. You folks do the banging, I'll do the saving your ass. Anyways...
We're getting out of Iraq but I think Afghanistan is going to heat up. Maybe Pakistan will open up... I swear, sooner or later they have to clean up those tribal regions.
So yeah, if you want to go to Afghanistan, good luck.

Maybe the Coast Guard?
They got some fliers up in them there skies.
Anyways, for anyone who may know, is there a specific position for being a turret gunner on something like an Abrams or some other vehicle.
I wanna be a turret gunner on a vehicle, it just seems like an interesting position.
Also I don't wanna shoot people *not to say I wouldn't*, I just wanna be shot at. I want that thrill.

No, you don't. 'Cause you'll get that thrill, say, five or six times before they ship you home to your family in a coffin. Not worth it.
Have you ever lived the first 17/18 years of your life never taking a risk?
Never breaking a bone, or even coming close to having a slight opportunity of breaking a bone?
I never wanted that life, I just wasn't allowed to have a different one.
Military can change that.

Taking a risk, and having a death wish are two different things. I assume you've never shot a gun, so you don't truly understand the power they possess. Having pointy pieces of metal fly at you at over 1000 feet per second in rapid succession is not thrilling. Having a round enter your body and tumble around shredding tissue apart beyond repair isn't thrilling. Having an IED blow your limb off leaving you permanently disabled and having to deal with the sub-standard care of the military hospitals is not thrilling. If you want to serve for the thrill of it, get the thrill from the experience as a whole, and the fact that you get to serve the greatest country in the world. Don't serve for the thrill of getting shot at or blown up.

You don't understand.
I want the risk of dying at every waking second.
I want the horror that I might not be alive two seconds from now.
I want every damn morsel of it.
I don't want to die, but if that's a consequence, so be it.
Now when that doesn't work, I plan on joining the Marines.

You'd have to sign up as a crewman.

Please for the sake of all that is good and holy, don't wish to be shot at. This is exactly what I was talking about in my last post.
It'd suck for me.
Probably fly logistics or something, might go in to fly an Apache though, I just don't like getting shot at.
