I recommend Pokemon up to the Hoenn region. In my opinion, everything past Sinnoh isn't all that special. I also like the Dragon Ball series. Dragonball Z is also good, but Dragonball GT is okay.

In a world full of peaches my Johnny, don't ask for applesauce.
Try reading Japanese visual novels. They're practically the same as anime but with a greater focus on plot and character development... and not on, well, animation. There really haven't really been any anime in the last year or two that I've enjoyed a lot. I did like Spice and Wolf, but it just wasn't satisfying on the same level as reading Tsukihime, Ever 17, or most any of Key's VNs were. But if you're set on watching anime, and you're new to it... here are a few pretty solid titles:
- Now and Then, Here and There
- Berserk
- Monster
full metal alchemist - a darker story, but plenty of action and some very twisted "magic" without the mind**** that anime tends to give.
Ah! My Goddess - the title suggests p0rn, but its almost suitable for kids. sort of a romantic comedy, with a little fightng scattered here and there. good story all in all and the characters are very entertaining.
Bleach - similar to dragonball or one piece, but it doesn't seem to drag on as bad.
Spice and Wolf - do not miss or I WILL set your pants on fire.
Shigofumi - a very dark story, about a mail carrier who brings letters from the dead.
Nagasarete Airantou - about a guy lost on an island, full of nothing but girls. about the same age rating as Ah! My Goddess.
PLENTY more where tose came from. send pm for a list.
I hate to be that guy that gives anime titles that everyone has heard of but... Full Metal Alchemist is a great anime. It transitions from being dark and gloomy to happy and fun really well.

Loved playing through Ever 17. Not gonna lie, I shat bricks during Coco's route.
I've tried to tell people that Elfen Lied sucks, but nobody seems to listen to me.
What's wrong with Elfen Lied?
Other than the basic concept, not much is right with it, IMO. There is the creepy love interest with kota and his cousin. I don't care if that's legal or not in japan, it's still creepy. They could have easily replaced "cousin" with "old friend". It would have been less creepy and still fit in the story just fine. There is excessive gore that serves no purpose other to be excessive gore. In an action anime, I could understand it. This show, at its roots, is a love story. Watching Lucy hack through people with no remorse fills me with emotions counter intuitive to those that a love story should fill me with. I can't connect with her because she really has no redeemable qualities. Shes a *****. She doesn't deserve to be with kota. in fact, (taking a line from Samuel L. Jackson here) she deserves to die, and I hope she burns in hell! To better illustrate this point, imagine she was just a serial killer without the powers she had. Lets say she used a butcher knife. I don't think anyone could feel sorry for someone running around stabbing everyone, so why should super sonic arms sprouting out of her back make a difference. Another theme seems to be tolerating those that are different. Again though, how am I supposed to accept that message when the person I'm supposed to be tolerant of is ****ing up everyone's ****? It just doesn't work. So why the gore then? I theorize that like most bad anime's, the head of production probably wanted to sneak his/her sexual fetishes in, and the head of production for this show just happens to enjoy gore. He also probably enjoys girls with missing limbs, as not one, but two people get their arms and legs chopped off for no good reason.
I could write more, but this was a good start. I'll save the rest of my disdain of this anime for counter points, if need be.
Actually, in the manga, they are friends, not cousins. I think that all of the suffering (though a little unnecessary) creates a poignant contrast to the few moments of happiness. And in your response to your question about Lucy's weapons, is that her actions are wrong, no matter how she commited them. However, I can feel sadness for Lucy as a child and condemn her actions as adult.
actually, the same mutation that gives them the arms makes them want to kill people. the arms are controlled by the personality part of the brain, so the leap there is that the arms themselves can control the personality of the character. (count 'em when Lucy starts to loose control there are 4 hooded figures in her delusions telling her to kill everyone. she also has 4 of those arms.) for Lucy, when she takes the head shot, it gives her a split personality, as Nyuu she can not use the arms.
but i agree, the extremely excessive gore and nudity were both unnecessary.
Neon Genesis Evangelion!! epic all the way. 24 episodes, skip the last 2 and watch end of evangelion movie for REAL ending, the last 2 episodes were for the TV only.
Don't watch it if you have mental issues or a shallow mind. For your own safety.
If you asked me I would suggest you watch Naruto, Bleach, and one i just recently discovered Highschool of the Dead.
Naruto is pretty much safe for all ages. Bleach is geared more towards Teens. Highschool of the Dead features flesh eating zombies and half naked big chested girls wielding guns and swords and is mainly for those of age. However HotD is really good if you can look past the amount of gore and boobs in it.
If you want something with less fighting then either of those then i would suggest Rosario + Vampire and Rosario + Vampire 2...I thought they were cute and funny.
Also One Piece is rather amusing even if it does get lame and/or boring in some parts.

Kinda hard to suggest one without knowing what you like, but Higurashi is pretty awesome.

Now to look a couple up and see which ones take my fancy...
but i agree, the extremely excessive gore and nudity were both unnecessary.
Gave me such a warm happy feeling at the end, although I was crying. Very emotional, and I'm not the type of person to like that. Cool action too.
same with Elfen Lied FMA is pretty good
and here is an awsome one i never see mentioned
Doctor Blackjack
Its pretty damn awsome
I'm only a couple episode into the second season (or is it series? o.O)
Lol, k then.
