A while ago I made a post in "The advice thread", I forgot about that post for a while but when I came back to it someone suggested watching anime. Now I've been meaning to watch anime for a while to see what it's like but now I'm wondering, what should I begin with/watch?

If you want to see something action packed that doesn't constantly through boobs and panty shots at you. Go watch black lagoon. It could use a bit more back story IMO, but its still one of the best ever made IMO. I'm sure some here will recommend you watch elfen laid, but I wouldn't. The story was ridiculous, and at the end I felt like I wasted a chunk of my life watching it. Inuyasha's good if you want something mild and easy to follow, but it really just boils down to them walking for 130+ episodes.
I've tried to tell people that Elfen Lied sucks, but nobody seems to listen to me.
A lot of anime in general isn't particularly good, but when a majority of the fan base cares more about "super kawii loli girls" than a coherent story, its hard to show them how much their favorite shows suck.
I'll throw death note out there too. about half way through the series, there is a major plot twist, and I feel that the storyline goes down hill afterward, but I'd say its still worth a watch.
If that's how you determine the quality of a show, I can't fault you for that, but gore is much lower on my list than a coherent story line when I critically analyze a show.
I also recommend Mushishi. The best, in my honest opinion, anime I have ever watched. That or Legend of Galactic Heroes. Be warned... LoGH is about 110 episodes long and that is just the main series. No side stories...
It's kinda hard to suggest something without knowing what kind of stuff you like. .__.;
Though, I doubt you'd like the stuff I watch. :V Hidamari Sketch, Azumanga Daioh, etc. I'm not manly in the least bit. 8D
There was one short anime that a friend showed me once... It was something about a student council, and was hilarious. I forget the name of it though. D:

An alternate future in which the United States lost the Revolutionary War, solidifying Britannia (Great Britain)'s world power status. After Napoleon's armies conquered all of Europe, the Britannian Empire ran to the North American continent. Centuries later, after making huge leaps in military technology, they set out to conquer the world. Conquered Japan, now known as Area 11, is a unique case. They surrendered before exhausting all of the resources, allowing multiple resistance groups (or terrorists, depending on your point of view) to oppose the Britannian occupation. The story focuses on a young Britannian named Lelouch Lamprouge, and his personal vendetta against the Empire, combined with his plans to change the world to make it a safer place where his young, disabled sister Nunally can live happily.
Elfen Lied
Lucy, a beautiful but extremely dangerous mutant, escapes from a sinister research facility, brutally slaughtering anyone that gets in her way, whether they intended to or not. However, a glancing head shot from an anti-tank rifle leaves her injured, and she falls into the ocean, unconscious...
Later, university student Kouta and his female cousin Yuuka are walking along the Yuigahama beach near Kamakura, when they find a naked young woman with horns on her head. They end up taking her home and calling her Nyu after the only sound she makes.
Between the sinister government agency running the facility, Yuuka's jealousy, Nyu's sociopathic alternate personality and a traumatic past he cannot remember, Kouta is in deep trouble. Caught between monsters, both human and not, where does his loyalty lie?
Note: This series is extremely graphic, in both gore and nudity and is very dark and depressing most of the time. However, I recommend this series because of the emotional impact the story has by how the rare moments of happiness stand out from the tragedy as a whole and the implications that the existence of the Diclonii raise about the human race as a whole.
Yes, I wrote the Code Geass summary and the note after the Elfen Lied summary. (The Elfen Lied main summary is from TVTropes.)
Any suggestions?
Pokémon, nya.
It's a beautiful anime about moral ambiguity.
I tried to watch that, but, like most animes (or Lost) it got confusing, nya.

Just out of curiosity, what makes it good, in your opinion?
