It's because the number was deciphered from some ancient language, skewed to the point that we don't know which number it actually was. The History Channel taught me this, long ago.
I have the feeling most of the Bible is like that.
The history channel has been proved wrong numerous times.
A lot of it is dramatizations.
Of course it is-how else are they supposed to represent history from before pictures/video? I believe what you meant was that the information itself is inaccurate, not that it has dramatizations (which you can't really go without with this sort of thing).
The History Channel and other similar stations have been going downhill in my opinion. All of it is Nostradamus conspiracy ********. Sure it's fun to watch once in awhile, but it's sad that their audience seems to be mostly conspiracy nuts nowadays.
It's also interesting to note that the Bible was also written and conceived by man.
I was trying to read your post open-mindedly until I got here. Why must you people randomly stab at religion in every topic? I'm not going to take anything you say seriously if you're just going to throw in "Oh yeah and Christianity is a lie." while trying to discuss a ****ing number.
Maybe because the number has religious connotations?..
I dunno, I'm probably way out in left field for this, but I always thought the whole '666' thing was Biblical. The fact that the Bible was written by tyrant kings for the ignorant masses just proves the point that the number is a lie.
It wa started in the Bible, iirc, but that doesn't mean that talking about it requires calling Christianity a lie. The whole "ololol let's **** off religious people" thing is getting tiring. And just what the hell do you mean by "tyrant kings for the ignorant masses"? Sounds like you need a copy. Know your history or don't come into a thread like this just to spread half-truths or lies. Seriously. it's ****ing annoying, to the point where I almost can't contain my temper.

I just don't believe in a book that was written 300 odd years after the bloke died.
At least my god has a hammer.
The Bible was not written in 330+ A.D. Links or it didn't happen.
Lol, makes sense. Maybe if the Bible was more like the Constitution, where those in charge are actually willing to change things more frequently to adapt to the present.
Note how I said "more frequently" not just that they're not willing to change. Cause there are plenty of things in the Bible that the Church doesn't back up anymore, if I remember correctly.
The Bible isn't a guideline for life, or at least isn't supposed to be, unless you are talking about the scattered teachings of Jesus or laws from early Judaism. The Bible is primarily a book of history and poetry, and others things, like children's stories from early Jews (Book of Jonah). At the least, it's not supposed to "change" for the times. What's in there is in there because it was a part of history and the teachings there applied to THAT time, unless they were universal teachings (for example, let's say Jesus said don't kill people for no reason. Obviously a universal teaching. It wasn't put into the context of ancient Palestine or anything. But then, let's say he told slaves to work for their master as a good Christian should to show they are good people. It obviously doesn't apply to modern America or anywhere else, because, well, we don't have slavery. And it's sure as hell not saying it supports slavery).

Off topic, but I agree with you there. Most of the "History" channel is now the "speculation of our doom" channel. I can't count how many "omfg dis is da sign of apocalypse let's drag this one thing out for an hour omgomgomg" documentaries I've seen on there recently. But it makes sense. People like hearing about stuff like that, not REAL history.

By "dramatizations," I meant dramatizations. Grossly misleadingly content that is acted and performed in such a manner that it simply didn't happen.

[23:31] <Ms_Britten> I love you Korea, will you marry me? xD
I've also heard that "The Beast" was the common reference Aug of the time for Caesar Augustus who was known for his oppression of the early Christians. In many ways also, Revelations can be paralleled to the fall or Rome rather than the end of the entire Earthly world.
Things like "And the lion shall rest with the lamb" being that the lamb is the common symbol for Christ and the lion being the symbol of the Roman empire.
So to that extent, Revelations isn', at least in my opinion, a prediction of things still yet to come... but rather the earliest political commentary.
And absolutely don't forget all the "SEX IN HISTORY" shows. They're so adorable. Most of them are mostly comprised of historians looking really uncomfortable while talking about sex. Like someone just put them on the spot and now they can't back out of talking about those pesky civil war prostitutes!
