Most references to this seem to agree that it's just a cool trip.
The program doesn't validate any sort of merit, nor does it require any. The point of most programs that prove anything is: If you have done X, you get Y, where X and Y are quantifiable measurements.
NYLC: If you have "been picked out of a draw and paid money for a trip", you get "a trip".
NHS: If you have "kept a GPA, done N hours of community service, and paid a small fee", you get "a certificate of recognition".
Just look up what "Whos Who" gets you.
WW: If you have "been picked out of a draw and paid money for a book", you get "your name in a book".
Rule #1 of anything advertised to you: search it up on google along with the word "scam". The more hits, the less valid.
I've done that before :smile.gif: It's a fun enough trip, and would probably look good on, say, an application or resume in the future. I recommend you do it.
It's a total waste of time unless you have an interest in breaking into politics. Otherwise, it's an excuse to go to DC, which would work better as it's own dedicated trip.
You sit around in a business suit for a week acting as though you already run the country (there's a workshop where you have to respond to some global crises), you play some really dumb (in the sense that they have NOTHING to do with leadership) games, and then you have a mock congress where you have to review a bill, try to re-work it to fit the needs of as many people as possible, then present it in an actual auditorium.
Oh, and they take you to the National Mall for, like, and hour and a half. Which is JUST enough time to BARELY peruse the Smithsonian Aerospace Museum. You also go to the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials for a little while, and the Vietnam memorial.
You spend the better part of a day on Capitol Hill, where you're scheduled to meet with the representatives of your state, and have an opportunity to tour the Library of Congress.
I went, if you can't tell. Least comfortable week of my life, I never want to wear a business suit again. Those pants make things ride up something fierce...
It was nice seeing bits of DC, but the actual content of the course was a waste of time for me. That may not be the case for you.

I don't remember paying anything for National Honors Society or Rhode Island Honors Society. I did get to graduate with a gold sash and blue tassel, though. One thing is worth noting: Colleges actually look at this one. Community service and a good GPA are things colleges like to see.

If I were part of this, I'd pretend to be a Republican and ask for large changes to be made to the bill and then vote it down regardless of whether or not those changes were made, claiming that larger changes should have been made and that I didn't like the very principle of the bill in the first place.

You sure you weren't there? I SWEAR that happened.

I've gotten that every year for the past 3 years.
