First and foremost, ANY current browser is better than IE. You've done yourself a huge favor by not using it anymore. As for Chrome, it's very good, and gaining popularity pretty quickly. Firefox is losing its steam a little bit, but still going very strong. You could go into the whole browser war thing anywhere on the internet, so just do a little searching around for reviews and performance tests of each browser. Don't just take our words on it.
But now that you're free from the shackles of IE, you've got quite a few options to choose from. Are you looking more for lean, quick performance? Or a more robust, full featured setup? Or just as close to IE as possible? You can pretty much do whatever you want with the current (non-IE) browsers.
I find myself using Chrome more and more but Firefox is much better for development wise because of Firebug (Chrome has their own Firebug extension but it doesn't work really...). I find Chrome uses up MORE memory than Firefox on my tests which is a bad sign. But whatever, it runs a bit faster on this SLOW laptop.

Meh, I have more than enough memory still left on this comp.
Also, nobody answered my question. Is chrome actually making MC run faster on my computer, or is it just me?
Firefox + AdBlock Plus + NoScript = Best way to browse
As for Chrome making Minecraft run faster, maybe. The browser does have a bit of control over the memory the program's using, but mostly it's the JRE doing the work.
Also, IE8 isn't terrible. Microsoft finally decided to pay attention to the standards set by the W3C instead of trying to invent their own (I'm looking at you, IE6). It's significantly better than 6 and 7 almost to the point of being a viable option...almost.

It isn't terrible compared to other version of IE. Compared to the other major browsers, (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, etc.) it's still ****. I mean, look at this, it gets an Acid3 score of 20/100. Almost all other browsers get 95+/100
Chrome is decent. Here's my rank, out of five score, and reasoning.
FireFox ***** - Fast, customizable as hell, and open-source (Recommended addons: Foof, fasterfox lite, hidebad, fastestfox, personas)
Safari **** - Fast as hell (fastest of all I've ranked), Apple
Chrome *** - Haven't used it much, but relatively fast, tricky to learn google-centric interface :/
IE8 *** - Works for basic tasks. Slightly slow and clunky.
IE7 ** - No. Just no.
IE6 - *shudders*
EDIT: Average acid3 results from Wikipedia!
IE8: 20/100, test failed
FireFox 3.6: 94/100, test failed
Safari 4: 100/100 a winrar is you! (test succeded)
Google Chrome: can't find score, too lazy to download chrome and test it
EDIT EDIT: [pathetic] The IE dev team's next-gen IE 9 build got 32/100 [/pathetic]

Firefox is a main to most people, chrome? It's alright, worthwhile and still usable if you don't want a bulky browser (Even though there is a tool called MemoryFox that clears ram/usage when you close a tab/use firefox.)
I used avant back a while ago, and just stuck with it until it started to lock up on me, but it was a good idea to switch to Chrome.

Sometimes Chrome uses more memory than firefox but in other cases on my computer FF has achieved 440,000K memory usage. Even those RAM cleaning add-ons only sort about 100K of that. Chrome never reached more than 80,000K.

Chrome is great, especially now that the Dev build has extensions, just like FF. I love most all Googley programs. FF is most definitely my secondary browser and was my primary until Chrome was released.

I don't like being separated from my familiar FireFox toolbar for too long...
But could I not just download a toolbar?
Also, I don't think there is a "diagnose connection problems" option with chrome when there are connectivity problems.
