Yeesh, your school sounds horrible. Can't imagine what it'd be like having to go there every day.
Ya, it was a train wreck. Fortunately for me however, despite being the quiet type, I got along with everyone so I had no problems personally.

I guess I had a great school. You had a large variety of electives, so you could chose what you wanted, though you did have some required classes of course. The teachers were nice and understanding. You could consider them your friend. The only way you could fail a class like English was if you didn't hand anything in. I guess my experience wasn't the normal one.
My school was terribly underfunded and run down. There were next to no electives, music or Spanish were pretty much the only electives, fun electives anyways. 80% of the students had to take extra English and/or math as their elective because the school's state test passing rate was less than 30%. All of the schools around it look like shining mansions, big enough to be colleges. I've had a lot of nice teachers but several mean teachers.
I had an English teacher in the 6th grade, there was nobody who liked her. She assigned everyone a surprise two page essay to write in one night. I had other homework and I only have so many hours after school to do it. I got half-way done with it. The next day I finished it and brought the paper in. She looked at me and gave this evil smirk and said "Sorry, no late homework." She obviously hates children. I didn't even get 1 point for effort, after all the hours of frustration I spent writing it. I got a zero.
So, yes. Your experience is a lucky one. I've had a lot of teachers who are friendly, I'm sure most people have.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
Generally you're supposed to go and ask this stuff sometime before the due date, considering you have about a week to do it. Unless it was due literally the day after you got it, you kinda deserved it.
I did complete the homework on time and returned it, it was only that one question that I didn't answer was I called out for and got the detention because of that. I even distinctly remembering the teacher pointing to that small blank space and telling to my face that I have detention.
Isn't the point of homework to understand the material and practice writing it? I'll surely wont understand anything if I write down anything that comes to mind. Frankly, it's quality over quantity.
Good on the students. They found the loophole, maybe the school will turn its brain on now.
Oh how I wished. After I left that school for good, the principal was replaced, and all the senior teachers were fired or replaced with new ones. I even heard a rumour from my friends that my 8th grade teacher got fired for making a student cry. The school went downhill ever since I left.
Lots of other horrible stuff happened, but it may not be appropriate to share.
At least somebody answered them. Note the somebody. I hadn't done anything. But seriously, note the math problems. Not just because I'm British and I can't stand the word math, but also because that just adds to my point that neither was a Physics problem.

Doesn't change my point. If you have an extended period of time to complete that homework, you can go to your teacher and ask for help before the due date. This is how my school works and this is how many schools work. You obviously don't understand the material well enough if you can't answer the question. You aren't going to learn the stuff by staring at the question blankly. If I start leave out one question on my maths homework, I need to sort myself out and learn how to answer that question or I'm going to lose marks on the exam. The punishment was justified, you didn't complete the work at all.

The top is an A*, the equivalent of an A+ or something, I guess, pronounced 'A star'. That is literally what we have. Under that is A, B, C, etc, all of the way down to I think a G. Everything there is a pass. If you do fail, the grade is a U. Most employers, universities, etc consider a C or higher as a 'good' GCSE. If you have that, you're pretty much sorted unless you're going for a lot higher and certain more demanding subjects, like Maths or Physics, in which case you may be asked for more to get to further education
Although now they're starting a whole new grading system from 1-9, where 9 is the best only given to about 3% of the population, which should be in affect for the students who will be doing final exams in 2017, I think.

How is the Ohm's Law question not a physics problem?
You don't need to know anything about physics or Ohm's law to do it, really. You're always given the formula. It's a maths question with a physics context. No more, no less. Leave that for the maths paper. Have the students define Ohm's law or do something with a graph, then make them use that data to solve an equation. That's a Physics question, requiring you to actually understand what is being described. The amount of times I've had to simply refer to the formula page to answer the question, not even remembering how the process works or what it means, is unreal.

Wait, you don't have to actually remember formulas? That's a huge bloody cop-out. This is how I would have gotten the question.
Hell, we weren't even assessed on stuff this basic.

I now see the problem with this
Nope. No remembering. Same in maths (lol).
Others don't give you a sheet even when there are equations, and some equations you will need may be missing. But yeah, I don't get how me plugging values into yet another three term equation makes it anything other than a maths question. Just because it has moles or volts or whatever doesn't make it something that should be on my science paper unless it's tied to another part of the question. Maths is mandatory, we don't need the same questions in physics and chemistry if you're literally going to tell us the formula. We're tested on our ability to use a calculator, essentially, which is stupid in anything but maths.
Here's the literal, no joke, first page of the paper for a HIGHER TIER exam on the (obviously questionably) hardest modules:
:
All of those equations. Don't need to remember them. This is great for anybody decent at maths, because half of the questions on certain modules just become referring back to this page, but if a student is somebody who struggles with that sort of thing (finding the right equation, using it correctly, rearranging, etc), the question will be difficult. The problem is that with the formula sheet, literally every challenge in the question is a maths issue, not a physics one. It's kind of dumb.

Wow, that's really awful. The formula sheets we got in maths and physics exams were at the back of the paper, they only had the really complex equations, and they were mostly filled with equations we never needed. It was easier to take the time to memorise the equations than to constantly flip back-and-forth to the formula sheet

Yes, a punishment was justified, though I would have to say that a detention was too much. Having to come in after school or getting whatever points the problem was worth taken off would have probably have been better.

It might've been harsh for grade four, but not completing assigned tasks because you didn't seek assistance or clarification won't get you far in the workplace
So because I scored very high on my Congitive Abilities Test, I have to take Enrichment classes, and, if we miss out on class work, we still have to do it. Seriously? Why don't they just excuse us on our work, because ENRICHMENT COUNTS ON MY REPORT CARD YOU KNOW

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.

But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
