Today the New Horizons probe has reached Pluto after 3.6 billion miles and nearly a decade of travel. We're getting our first real look at Pluto and its moons and already it's pictures are stunning. If you want to learn more about this then you can check it out at NASA's website and there will be pictures coming out over the next couple of days but today we have...
Now we know that Pluto has a heart <3

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost
From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring
Renewed shall be the blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king
The heart might be geologically active or maybe it's an impact but it doesn't look all too much like a crater. I can't wait for more of these pictures to come out!

It's pretty cool since this was our only chance to see Pluto in our own time since Pluto is now traveling farther and farther away from the sun because of its orbit.
Fun Facts: Pluto has completed a full orbit since its been discovered and New Horizons is powered by plutonium.

All of this is pretty cool, but I just hope it doesn't start up the whole "Pluto is a planet, despite the fact that it doesn't meet the categorizations to be a planet" crap.

The definition of a planet is pretty arbitrary and there is no real line you can draw where you can say that this is a planet and that is not but we humans need definitions for things and also if Pluto is a planet then Ceres is a planet along with Eris, Makemake, and Sedna. Also I think the reason why people think it's unfair to revoke Pluto's 'planetship' is because many people grew up with Pluto as a planet and it was mainly astronomers and not planetary scientists who decided Pluto wasn't a Planet. I'm not saying I think Pluto should be a planet but it surely is interesting.

Technically, as the rules to be a planet are an abstract concept created by humans, yes Pluto can be considered a planet; but then, so can all the thousands upon thousands of tiny insignificant objects, which is where the problem and therefore necessity of a definition arise. (imagine reciting this list of planets. I mean, I can't come up with a memorable acrostic for all that, can you?) (also, this is ignoring the fact that, to some extent, "planet" is also abstract. But let's not get into that)
Yes, that's true, but what makes me angry is that people (who I doubt bothered to read anything about planet categorization) just decide that Pluto should be known as a planet again for no good reason. I mean, the scientists that declared Pluto a dwarf planet (who studied at a university about this stuff) probably know a lot more about planets than the average person so you shouldn't start believing that you know more just because you have a computer and read one article that claims that Pluto does qualify as a planet.

Well nostalgia is no reason to revoke scientific decisions. Things change (and considering how trivial Pluto's planethood is to our daily lives) they shouldn't care.

If you knew the specifics of the vote that made Pluto a dwarf planet then you might also see it as an unfair vote. This is because a only a fraction of the members of the IAU actually voted on Pluto and even then they were all astronomers and not planetary scientists, imagine a group of marine biologists voting that your favorite mammal is actually an amphibian and not only that but only a small percentage of the group actually votes on the fate of your favorite mammal.

No but seriously, amazing quality pictures, was surprised to see Pluto's true colour

I had heard is was getting close a few months back, didn't know it would get there this fast.

It's traveling a million miles a day but it took a long time since it needed to travel 3.6 billion miles.

I know it's not as fast as I think, it's faster than I thought though.

How sweet. It loves us.
Omg, how is New Horizons make that photo of Pluto with good graphic???
This is pretty awesome! Its crazy how far it has traveled!

It's interesting to see Pluto up close and it's real colour. Keep posting more pics, I'd like to stay updated
I can just imagine the probe flying by Pluto screaming "SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!"
Don't get the reference? Darn.
I am a friend of all Snow Golem kind.
New Horizons has given us a color picture of Nix and a black and white picture of Hydra
I do wonder what Nix's redspot is

Viva La Pluto.
