I want to hear your thoughts on this. Me personally, I absolutely despise the Minecraft fan-base. I hate it. One of the reason's why I don't play Minecraft as much as I used to. Anyway, because of Minecraft's childish fanbase, I usually tend to not see much Racism or Sexism on the Minecraft servers. In fact, I'm a bit guilty for being a bit sexist myself, but my defense is usually they attack first in chat. And obviously, I find every possible way to hurt them as hard as I can
What about you guys? I see sexism sometimes in Minecraft but honestly I don't mind, the other day I saw a small case about someone mocking Asians. I've also noticed that because of it's fan-base, EVERYONE flips out if you make a dirty joke. For example, a 9/11 joke, and things related to that.
Thoughts?

Sexism is going to be a problem in any open-chat game. As well as racism. Stereotypes spread everywhere, and just because Minecraft has a childish fanbase doesn't mean that there isn't going to be bad eggs in the system.

Are you being serious right now? If you think it's childish for people to be upset about a 9/11 joke, I think you're the childish one. Sure, not everyone will find jokes about terrible tragedies upsetting/offensive, but a lot of people do.
Yea, because of MC's most common demographic, you are going to get a lot of younger kids who think racism and sexism is "edgy" and "cool". Either ignore them, or try to teach them proper manners. I feel that most kids will get over it once they grow up.
It's almost as if building off-centred towers with blocks appeals to children. Ground-breaking thesis in the making here.
exactly. The game was originally made for children (around the name of 7-9). There are going to be immature kids. There is nothing someone can do about it.
Yeah, it's completely reasonable to find offense in a 9/11 joke. It's also reasonable to find humor in it. The trick to a joke is knowing your audience, so making a potentially offensive joke in a public place isn't a good idea.
I know! The fanbase you're talking about isn't simply just kids, your talkin seven year olds. The seven year olds are the kings/queens of sexism. They're always like, ''GIRLS ARE GROSS AND THEY LIKE PINK!11!!'' What da frick?!
You're telling me that the minecraft community is worse than compared to the LoL community or COD? I'm impressed. Besides... you can't pin the blame just on children... what's saddening is that there are adults who play this game and are just as bad if not worse.
Literally every popular online game has a small portion of its' fanbase that enjoys making these discriminatory remarks and jokes. Minecraft is not a special case. Almost every game I've played that has a large playerbase, I've encountered many people who are racist, sexist, anti-semitic, anti-homosexual, whatever you can think of. Garry's Mod and Team Fortress 2 are the two games that instantly come off the top of my head whose communities have a large amount of those kinds of players. If a game is popular worldwide, there's a pretty good chance that some of its' players will be immature, inconsiderate and just general bottom-feeders.
That's actually one of the main reasons I don't play on servers anymore except the private one I own with a friend that has a very small fanbase. I got very sick of the sexism because I'm a woman, I used to get a lot of 'get back to the kitchen' and 'girls play video games?' jokes and it just got to a point I couldn't take it anymore. I didn't see so much of the racism because most people don't ask or tell their race, but I did see a little while I was around some of the bigger servers.
I was also mocked for being a Pagan, had someone on a server who was Christian interrupt some chatter between me and two other Pagans and tell us that we should read the Bible and go to church or else we'd burn in hell and apparently our disbelief in hell didn't mean it wasn't a real place. When we told him to **** off and leave us alone he turned griefer on us and the admins didn't do anything because apparently we 'devil worshipers' had provoked him.
Age doesn't seem to matter too much, it's more maturity level. I've run into some 14-15 year old kids who are mature and take everything in stride, whereas the Christian guy mentioned above was in his late 20's, so by far not a kid. The fanbase stretches from kids to adults, and I have seen just as many teens and pre-teens as I have 20's and 30's and even older.
But yeah no, the sexism is by far the biggest reason I won't go into servers anymore. It's either solo or a small Realms one for me and a few friends that I know won't pull that stuff on me.

Well if you pagans stopped eating babies maybe you wouldn't have so many issues.
This is partially why I'm not sure if I should play on servers or not. I'm a woman, and from other games, I've gotten the whole "get me a sandwich", "there's no women on the internet", "why did you make a male character? you're a girl, just look pretty and let the men play" thing. I usually roll my eyes and move on, but it gets annoying on a long term. Especially on voice chat - I have a deep voice for a woman, so everyone thinks I'm a 10-year-old boy just there to beg for freebies.
On the other hand, I've been asked by women to have lower prices when I sell them things because they're "cute" and so on; direct offset of sexism. As women, we're "expected" to be weaker than men and therefore we need exceptions. Told her I was a girl too and her response was something like "oops, sorry".
Some part tells me that I should start playing servers and make some new friends. I like meeting people. But I know that by having boobs, I'm automatically a target for derisive comments and I don't wanna deal with that.

I mean, EVERY game has it's fair share of children.
But MINECRAFT, MINECRAFT TAKES IT TO A WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL.
