Anybody else get Dark Souls II? If so, how far are you into the game?
It would be good if we could all share tips, because the game strongly relies on the community.
I have to wait until it comes out for PC because I just bought one and I can't afford an extra 130$. When I do get it, though, I'm going to make the ugliest, most deformed character possible and do a naked fist playthrough.

It is pretty hard to not make your character hideous. That is why I always wear a helmet that conceals my face, even when I am human.
Just got past the Ruin Sentinels. Here is a tip, make them throw their shields at you. They can't get their shields back afterwards, and it makes the rest of the battle so much "easier".
Also, anyone find any of the big strength swords? I am still running around with a flimsy fire longsword. It gets the job done, but I want something that smashes people on the ground like the Zweihander did in DS1.
This game is amazing. It takes everything from Dark Souls (My favorite game ever) and adds in some new refreshing stuff. I haven't finished so I won't say the game is near perfectt but so far it is! I love the game so much and I'm in Lower Brightstone Cove. The game is so freaking hard...i love it...
Pros:
-Everything bad has left from Dark Souls 1.
-The atmospheric and deep gameplay is so satisfying.
-Combat feels a lot more grounded and deeper.
-Completely fair game in every aspect.
-Most rewarding game I've ever played.
Cons:
-FPS dips a lot.
-Some bonfires (checkpoints) are put in stupid places
-Few areas in the game looks very out of place with weird lighting and cheap textures. The earliest you can see this is Forest of the Giants.
Those are pretty much my thoughts of the game so far. I'm 25 hours in and loving the game.
Tips?
Hm, the weight system is a tad different or so it seems. I noticed unlike in Dark Souls 1 there are more then 4 types of rolls (light, medium, heavy, stomp). It seems there are about 5 or 6 and each one makes everything go faster.
You can teleport out of the gate without an item like the 'Lordvessel'.
Enemies de-spawn after you kills them enough times. (Not sure on the number but it's more then 12) This seem like it'd make the game easier but it just makes it so you don't have to deal with annoyingly weak enemies much more then in Dark Souls 1.
Endurance is one of the most important stats to upgrade like in the first Dark Souls.
Unless you know what you're doing build wise the game is going to be exceptionally hard.
Especially considering you lose total health when you die, the item to bring it back up are finite, and most if not all enemies have stun lock chain moves that will likely remove a hefty chunk of your health.
Plus heal items are also finite and estus is rarer.
Top tip is getting your build right, or you probably wont have fun with this game (I know I'm not really).
The plot of the game is kind of... Eh...
Not sure I like it.
I think it's going to be like Dark Souls I where the flesh of the story isn't going to be fully uncovered until we play through it a few dozen times.
Another things I don't like is that the torch mechanic. It feels so useless, I think I'm half way threw the game and there hasn't been an area (Like tomb of the giants from DS1) where it would be super useful.

The Gutter is much, much easier with a torch. It helps you see the little statues that shoot poison at you.
No Man's Wharf is also easier with a torch, because it repels those demon things, but you can just turn on the giant lamp once you are near the end of the level.

As long as you don't allocate points into useless skills, and not keep all of your skills balanced, you should be fine.
Plus, I am pretty sure you can reallocate your skill points at Things Betwixt with a Soul Vessel, so screwing up your build is not a fatal mistake.
Cons

Very subjective. I think the Forest of the Giants area looks great. A lush forest next to a beach? Seems cool. Comparable to the weird Valley of Drakes from Dark Souls.

Bah, try to grind without the stab-happy hollow there to greet you for the umpteenth time.
glad the game isn't easier for newer players. The game is only easy for us who played the previous games because we are used to the style of the game. There's been over 4 million deaths (and counting) today in Dark Souls II. If the game was easy, the numbers would be surprisingly less. People seem to forget that one could gain skill and be good at something. DS2 is so much like the original that it's easy to the veterans who conquered it.
Where does this "Don't balance things" come from?
I balanced my skills between strength, dex, vitality and endurance (which you apparently shouldn't do. Focus on strength or dex, not both) and got by excellently in DS1
I'm doing the same thing this game and things seem to be going okay. Game is exceptionally difficult and the Wharf seems impossible without just running through, but relatively fine.
You want something like the Zweihander in DS2?
Hint: Comebacks baby.
I am saying don't make every single stat a consistent level.
Focus on a few stats, and ignore the rest.
I am just saying don't make every single stat level 15 or something.
Also, it is fine to balance strength and dexterity, I have been finding quite a few weapons that require both to use properly, plus, the claymore was a quality weapon in DS, and that weapon was great.

Yes that is subjective you are right. Also there are a few areas in Forest of the Giants that look worse then a game made in 2003 (which I mean nothing wrong with that besides it doesn't flow with the game). The setting is great though.

Gutter! Yeah I loved that area it made the torch really useful. Same thing with No-Mans Wharf but I still wish it was used a tad more. I have 2 hours and 15 minutes on my torch left which I find a little funny.

I don't know what I should upgrade my Mastodon Halberd to. The Dark element looks interesting, but I don't know what enemies are weak against it.
Or should I just not be using the Mastodon Halberd? It has an A rating in strength, and does 410 damage at +10. Are there any other good strength weapons? I tried using the Zweihander, but it is disappointing in this game. I guess I could always just respec my character...
Either the game is really short or you play all day.
I'm taking my time playing at least 3 hours per day and at most 8. (judge me if you want).
It's about a 45-50 hour game. If you have played 1 and are pretty skilled at the game.
Really good game, game of the year so far.

My friend gave me a good suggestion: the drangleic sword.
With 25 strength and 20 dex (The minimum for the weapon, might I add) two-handing an un-upgraded drangleic sword did at least 350 damage to most enemies (was doing around 250 to bosses with only one hand).
It also scales C in both dex and strength I think (Maybe B in strength).
And it can be upgraded using twinkling titanite.
Both me and my friend are using it all game.
Very good weapon.
I heard that it is the Drake Sword of Dark Souls 2. Strong at the beginning, but then it starts to level out near the end. The scaling is the only thing that concerns me. I would rather have a weapon that takes advantage of my highest stats, which is why I am actually considering a caestus build later. Those bad boys have an A/A/-/- stat scaling, which means that they are ridiculously powerful later on in the game.
Jokes aside on this video, it actually shows how effective they can be when used well.
I am expecting that to get patched, along with the Broken Straight Sword's Pain Train capabilities.

I saw this video of Reddit. So good, can't wait to see more cool builds.

Hmm... My friend has played a good deal into the game (Nearing completion) and claims to have used the Drangleic sword. Needs further investigation.
I was only turned off from using it because I killed lots of people in PVP using it, so I thought that if they couldn't kill me with it, I wouldn't be able to use it properly.
Now everyone I fight is either using Pyromancy and Sorcery, or dual wielding Ultra Greatswords.
PVP is a lot easier now than it was in Dark Souls. I never use Human Effigies, because I can just kill enough people to turn human again.
I was a horrible fighter in Dark Souls, until I started playing as a Giantdad, but that was kind of cheating.

I wanted to be one of the cool kids.

Almost done with the game, I've been so busy playing CS:GO.
Almost finished in just a few days?
