Red Dead Redemption. Bit of a cop out I know but the first time I beat I damn near wept.
After going through LITERALLY the entire story line and becoming attached to Marston those jerkwad agents just
kill him while his son, Jack, and wife, Abigail, flee their farm. :'[
I have to agree with the original poster on this one. The Walking Dead had a very sad ending, and it's been a while since I've played any games with particularly sad endings (except maybe the original BioShock, but that doesn't count because I already played through it once a long time ago.)
Drawn to life 1: When the mayor was killed by Wilfre, when Jowee was going to leave
Drawn to life 2 [the feels are strong in this one]: When the opera singer lost the contest and was about to get killed by Salem [Wilfre] and she sung to her child, At the end when it turns out Mike [the human] was in a coma when his parents were killed in a car crash and the whole DTR world was just a dream.
Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light are both pretty depressing and sad games. Putting the story to the side, the environment just makes the player feel sorry for them. Every surviving Russian HAVE to live in the Metro and often have to get to the surface to scavenge scraps in the ruins of their previous homes.
And well, the ending of Last Light was a bit depressing. (Won't spoil anything).
Medal of Honor (2010) had a pretty sad ending for what it was. Haven't played many games that have brought out some emotion from me, but Medal of Honor did slightly.
all MOBA games
what kind of torturous hell would allow you too die an infinite amount of times just to get back up and get controlled back to war?
That's kind of like saying, "A Multiplayer FPS because what kind of sick country would allow to send soldiers into a battlefield only to die, but to respawn anyway."

your right!
and even worst in ffa they betray their normal teammates!
the horror!
the treachery!
So don't do this: (SPOILER) Bob dies at the end of...

For mine, The Walking Dead. That ending was just... wow.

A lot of games have sad moments...
Overall I'd say Defcon would be pretty depressing because of the whole nuclear war aspect to it...
Hmm
If I cried of difficulty, I would smack Halo in the face again. Legendary all skulls on is impossible single player unless you are an insane no-lifer.
It has a lot of sad moments, especially the people you get the 3 transformation masks from. Actually, masks in general it seems.
