I don't know if there has already been a thread like this already, but oh well.
This thread is dedicated to the upcoming game console, the OUYA. It will be a 99$, fully mod-able system that runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and will be root-able right out of the box. The developers will be encouraging modding of the system, and they put a ton of stress on that specific topic.
Supposedly all systems sold will be "dev-kits", and users will be able to make mods for existing games, and even make there own games. All games on the OUYA will be "free". Games will use microtransactions to gain revenue, or offer a free demo with a paid full version.
Here is a more in-depth video:
I believe that this console will give a huge one up to Indie developers. What is your take on it?
Oh yeah, the OUYA is a thing. Forgot about it. It's going to flop; sure some folks may get it since it'd make a fine conversational piece in the homes of hipsters, but there are much better alternatives for the price they're asking (i.e. older consoles). I mean really, what's the selling point? Playing crappy cell phone games on the TV? The ability to put in new parts to play the same crappy cell phone games?
I'm not really excited about it, it seems like its just a way to play smartphone games bloated up on a tv and played with a controller, unless it gets a ton really great games that I can only play on it, I don't think it's anything I will be remotely interested in.
I doubt it will be close to the steambox in terms of populatirty but open consoles are the future and the quicker we start getting into that market the better.
The creators say it isnt supposed to compete with the big three.
It doesn't matter what they say, it is a game console and therefore it is competing with other game consoles.

That's like saying a 520 is competing with Ares II just because it's a graphics card. They are at different price points.
...I have no idea what either of those things are. Well, they're graphics cards, obviously, but I only know that because you just said so. Still, owning one of these cards would mean not owning the other, and lower prices are just another way of competing. I will admit that my original post was not very well thought-out, and there are things which perform the same general function without directly competing with each other, but I do not believe that is the case with the OUYA and other consoles.

Honestly their timing is probably is what will make it fail if it does. They decided to release their console in the same year as the Xbox720 , PS4 , and possibly the steam box , as well as after the WIIU came out a few months ago. Not to mention the android operating system may drive some people off.

Your a such a great friend that if we were both in a falling plane and there was only one parachute... I would feel really bad and think of you often.

They aren't dev kits, dev kits are different, they are see thru and costed $600. These systems are the full systems. They are still mod-able tho with 4 screws that come out easily.
Also about the system competing with the "big 3", it's a non-issue. This system is made mainly so indie developers can release awesome games easily and see a return and feedback easily. It's hard to get an indie game to release on XBOX or PSN stores. This is going to be waaaay easier for them. Also if you say "it's basically the same as a cell phone, I don't care", you're wrong, this hardware is way more amazing then any cell phone. Also it will give developers way better hardware to make sweet games for then just cell phone android platform. They will be able to make better and better games. Most of the games right away will be crappy android ports, but as developers test out the full expanse of the new hardware, they will make them way better.

It's not hard to get it on XBL or PSN just expensive any game that goes through either network must pay an entry fee if you will and for many indie developers who are not as well funded as an indie dev like Valve or Mojang that can be pretty hefty price especially if they created it to be a free game that they just wanted to get out their as a "resume" for game development team. On a open platform that isn't the case the user searches for what they want and developers what they want without going through obstacles to get it out their.
Still this and the Piston and the Steam box will change the industry in some way no matter what the size of a consumer base either gets and is best for everyone in the long run

You're wrong.
My 3 year old iPad has better hardware than this, and that's nothing to boast about.
The OUYA, as it was unveiled last night, is really a modder's box. It's designed for games like Minecraft. Unlike the Xbox/etc., the ability to get into the development level of a game is by design, not a pain, which approximates the PC experience more than the big consoles.
I know I'm part of a huge group who wants to see Minecraft on this platform... If Mojang doesn't do it we'll probably do it ourselves.

a Cellphone with a controller can do the same, this just can't make phonecalls to my knowledge
cheap way to play angry birds on the TV, if thats your thing, not many games for android really are designed for bigscreen TVs

I don't know. I think it has more potential than that, but we will have to see.

And Wii U, don't forget about Wii U.
But still is a competitor. ATI cards are cheaper then Nvidea that doesn't mean ATI isn't Nvidea's main competitor.

Android does not support the full OpenGL Library Ubuntu does.
Yeah, true.
That may come with the future, though.
