It's honestly not as hard as it looks. If you panic, you'll most likely die. Just don't panic and start moving around randomly and you'll be fine. There's patterns to these kinds of things.
The Touhou games aren't free, but Zun only ever sells them at Japanese conventions, so everyone that isn't in Japan really has little to no way to get their hands on them besides downloading them. Despite this, Zun will sometimes post drunken rants on /a/ about how everyone is thieves.
Subterranean Animism is my favorite of the series. The game was just really well done and tons of fun to play. That said, I can't beat it on anything but easy mode. I am weak.

As a big shmup fan, I can second that. It's one of the reasons why I honestly just dont play the touhou series overmuch.
The series ends up spending way too much time trying to be pretty and shiny, and pointing out that it has alot of girls in it. Compared to other danmaku series, the gameplay honestly suffers a bit as a result. That, and they're nowhere near as difficult as they might look. At least, not in comparison to other, similar games. Geometric patterns might LOOK pretty, but tend to actually not be very hard to dodge. (and yeah, I've played well more than enough of the series, and other shmups in general, to be able to say that).
They're not bad games, I'm not saying that, but there's better bullet-hell shmups out there. Alot of them.
ilol'd.
