The Last Gate is a free to play online RPG. It uses the engine fro`m Mercenaries of Astonia which, during it's prime, had thousands of players. We aim to recreate the kind of game play that made Mercenaries of Astonia so loved and popular, but while adding in aspects to make the game easier to learn and more fun to play.
History
The Last Gate originates fro`m Mercenaries of Astonia, a game Daniel Brockhaus started back in 1996. The game was a huge success until it finally closed in 2002 to make room for Daniel Brockhaus's new, pay-to-play MMORPG Astonia: The Conflict. He simply did not want to keep paying for the cost of maintaining the game, and it wasn't designed to bring in money like his new game.
Although Astonia: The Conflict was a success, many of the old players did not like the feel of the new game. Eventually, Brockhaus decided to sell Mercenaries of Astonia to those who wished to try and revive it. Here is when The Last Gate was born.
Game Description:
The Last gate is a free MMORPG.
It is based off of the source code of one such 'Mercenaries of Astonia', or 'Mercenaries V2', as known by it's peers; created by one 'Ishtar', whom currently maintains 'Astonia 3'. It is a 2D isometric, tactical fantasy MMORPG, and runs very well on any windows computer. Macintosh and Linux may need farther testing, however, and are not guaranteed to work correctly. All In-game communication is text based; however, in how easily the program runs, one can easily minimize fro`m full screen in an instant, if they wish to communicate over an online vice chat tool; and fro`m minimize to full screen just as fast.
While there are other MoA servers floating around on the internet, this particular server has gone the extra mile, and is currently under a COMPLETE overhaul, top to bottom; left to right. While the graphics still retain their default style, as the original author of the game had created; this would leave something both old and new, for any player, newbie or oldbie, to enjoy.
Additionally, and unlike most other MMORPGs, there is a HUGE variety of skills to select fro`m, available to train however you please. As you gain experience, no matter the method, you may spend it on any skill or spell to increase the effect; and as such, NO two characters will ever be alike. Furthermore, there is no level cap, allowing players to continue indefinitely, even beyond maximizing their own potentials.
Finally, the game fully supports PvP, so long as the players enable it. Should a player refuse to take part, they needn't worry, as it's completely optional. If a player wishes to take part in PvP, they need but to find and kill the Priest, leader of the Temple of Chaos, and the option of PvP will be presented to them. PvP players may only kill other PvP players.

It's best to think of The Last Gate as a sort of 'table-top RPG' in mechanics. All characters are representations of that which they actually look like, while the locations and objects are preset dungeon maps for your adventures. It's a world full of opportunity and development... Give your character a purpose in this world; and follow it through to the bitter-sweet end. A daring thief? A powerful mage? A renowned knight? Endless opportunities await you, beyond The Last Gate.

A bit of an explanation about what the stuff on the splash-screen would be nice. I clicked on the Help link and AVG blocked it for "Being a known phishing site"
Not sure why anything would block it as a phishing site, it's just a large documentation of... well, words. I really need to get around to including a HUD interface help screen; I could have sworn I had one once before, but I'll make one as soon as I have free time.
Essentially, the top right grid is your list of skills. In these, the first box to a row is the skill name, the second box is the modifying value, the third and fourth boxes are for increasing and decreasing this value, and the fifth box is how much exp is required for the increase. At the bottom of the grid, you see the word "Update", which when clicked, applies the changes. Next to Update is how much EXP you have remaining to spend.
To the right of this is the player inventory with a scroll bar. Underneath are quick-grab buttons for gold, should you want to give someone a 1^n amount of money.
To the right of this is the character equipment, a picture of the character, his rank (Which is generally an estimation of how powerful he is (Or "Level", but the game doesn't really use a definite "Level" system), and beneath this is the HP, endurance and Mana estimation bars. (This whole box will change to an image and general outline of another character if you look at them, hence the HP/EN/MP bars being there to begin with)
To the right of this is the chat box, obviously.
Under the chat box is how much EXP you have total, and under that is your weapon value (Damage you do) and armor value (Damage you avoid).
The bottom right is a mini-map, and the bottom left are shortcuts(top grid) and HUD options(Bottom grid).
And trust me, this is a lot less complex as you get into the game than it was in explanation. Otherwise, I suggest you override AVG and read the Help pages before playing.

Why does this remind me of Runescape.
Because that's the first instinctive response people tend to make if they've never seen the game before. Trust me, it is a lot more like Diablo than Runescape.
Try running in Win95 compatibility mode? Otherwise, you could always take the long way and get a PC simulation program and try running it in that (As well as other games you can't run). Can't really help you if your computer keeps you from playing a large number of games than just this one, though.
God, I used to play Mercenaries back when I was, what? Twelve?
This is ancient history reborn to me. I'll definitely give it a shot. This time around I may even follow the Purple One.
Oh hey, finally a V2 vet!
Actually I remade THE WHOLE GAME, excluding graphics (and "race" names). No Purple one for you, you get to follow Pandimonium, God of Eternal Chaos.
I hope you're not one of the whiny V2 players who refuse to "relearn everything" >> (Honestly, the adventure is the game, not the end-game.)
If you are... Ehhhh, I left Pents in tact.
Otherwise yeah, more players I get, more motivation I have toward working on the game. Right now all there is are essentially the town quests, and upward toward Lab 2. Progress has been dead, as of late, but that will change if I get a player base greater than one person. >> <<
the code itself is C, but Ishtar left a lot of easily modifiable functions in the game itself, allowing even code noobs to alter the majority of the game single handedly. Still, I would appreciate the knowledge that my working on the game progress is not all for naught, hence my general unwillingness to continue progress until I actually have a player-base.
Downloading it now. I've wanted a SERIOUS MMORPG that wouldn't sap me of anything (Time, money, sex).
EDIT: Well, it'd be nice if I could get past a black screen with a cursor labelled walk. Does it work on Win7? Also, is there are windowed mode? 1680x1050 doesn't scale so well.
Also, is there are windowed mode? 1680x1050 doesn't scale so well.
*Sigh*, You'll need to use a desktop-like program to view it in windowed mode; I haven't figured out how to make a "Windowed mode" command, and even if I did, I can't figure out how to compile new client.exe's, so I'm sort of at a dead end in that regard. Sorry :x
Wait, what? Are there different player races? Or can players only be human and the NPCs are all the fun stuff like Lizardmen and so?
For now, yes. But same statement as above; I'm at a dead end when it comes to altering the client's pre-game interface. If I could add additional races, I would, but I can't. (Also it would be a pain in the ass respriting 1000+ sprites worth of Lizards to add mage hats or armor. Not that it wouldn't be a bad payoff, but trust me. 1000 sprites.)

God dammit, every single good-looking game fails when I try to run it on my VistaX64 machine (for obvious reasons)
