Just saw this promotion on PC Gamer and figured I'd let folks know about it. For the next 26 hours (as of this post), humble bundle store is giving away the original XCOM.
It's the near-future of 1999 and the Earth is under siege by mysterious aliens. XCOM must obtain and research advanced alien technologies to equip its field agents with the tools they'll need to thwart the alien invaders.
It is an incredibly engrossing and challenging tactical strategy game and a game I revisit every now and then. To anyone who decides to check it out, I'd also recommend grabbing the "Open XCOM" mod which adds a bunch of options/tweaks, a quick battle mode, and opens up the game to additional modding.
Listen here, laser weapons have infinite ammo (cheese), enemies die in at most seven hits (those are against enemy vehicles), plasma weapons kill them even faster (they also get innate accuracy bonus).
There's also lack of features such as: not being able to open doors unless you go THROUGH it.
Compare this to TFTD, the older cousin of UFO Defense.
Gauss (laser equivalent) weapon have LIMITED AMMO, Sonic (plasma equivalent) doesn't have AUTO SHOT (your go to firing option, aimed shot? what's that?), forcing you to use aimed shot (FACE IT, AUTO SHOT WAS CHEESY YOU SCRUBS), lobstermen (Muton equivalent) are tanky (Oh I'm sorry is that twenty gauss rifles pointed at me? I can't feel it over my AV14 shell) thus forcing you to use ACTUAL heavy weapons (no, blaster launcher doesn't work here), the chryssalid flies (floats, since it's underwater), alien bases have EVEN MORE nook and crannies than UFO Defense and to beat the game you have to capture a lobsterman commander inside one of those.
There is also ONE THING that you *NEED* to know before playing.
GET OPENXCOM(OpenTFTD included)
WHY? WHY?!! I'LL TELL YOU WHY!
DO YOU WANT TO PLAY IN LARGER RESOLUTION?! BAM!
DO YOU WANT BUG FIXES?! YOU GOT IT!
DO YOU WANT TO OPEN DOORS WITHOUT GOING INSIDE A ROOM ON UFO DEFENSE?! WOW, YOU CAN OPEN DOORS WITHOUT GOING INSIDE OF THE ROOM!

Sweet man. I redeemed it now. Looks cool!
How is compatability with modern Windows. It seems to be native Windows XP right? So I guess it wouldn't be hard.

I've had no issue running it on windows 7. The Steam version comes packaged with DOSBox set up to run xcom.
Nice, thanks. Never played it, but if it's free I'll certainly give it a whirl
HA!
Why would anyone play that when you have TFTD.
UFO Defense is cheesy and not in the good way.
