In order for the NX to succeed, Nintendo needs to capitalize on its strengths while bringing in 3rd party developers.
Nintendo's strengths, as I see them:
-Long running franchises with large fan bases and even larger brand recognition.
-Quality first party games
-Large market share when it comes to family-friendly titles
-Local co-op offerings, great for playing with friends/family in the same room
-System costs less than its competitors, thus a lower barrier to purchase compared to other consoles
-No subscription cost to play online
Nintendo's weaknesses:
-Severe drought of quality 3rd party games, particularly lacking sports titles and shooters
-Comparatively few popular online games. There's Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and... ???
-Expensive accessories
-They aren't known for sales or price drops, whereas all their competitors have sales/price drops/giveaways to attract customers
It should also be considered that with Iwata's passing, there could very well be a shakeup in Nintendo's upper management and possibly a change in product focus if they bring in someone from outside Nintendo to replace him.
Personally, my most-played Nintendo system was the Nintendo 64 and the games I played the most on it were Wave Race 64, FIFA 98, Madden 64, Mario 64, and Excitebike 64; with the exception of Mario none of those series appear on the Wii U (last FIFA on Wii U was FIFA 13) according to amazon.
Before I begin, I'll say that, up until very recently, I was possibly the biggest Nintendo fanboy out there.
I believe that the NX could succeed. It all depends on whether or not Nintendo makes good decisions. I picked up a Wii U the holiday it came out, and I was super excited. I was eagerly awaiting the release of the next Zelda, the next Smash Bros, and the next Mario Kart. In addition to this, I was looking forward to playing some 3rd party titles. Growing up on Nintendo, I had never played most of the popular games out there.
Oh boy, was I let down.
Nintendo's biggest advantage, as glargenheimerstein stated, is their long list of exclusives. Exclusives that weren't released on the Wii U for quite some time. Smash Bros and Mario Kart came out two years after the system. There's still no sign of a Metroid or Zelda title coming out any time soon.
Nintendo failed, and they failed badly.
In addition to the lack of first party games, the Wii U could handle the third party titles. The system may have been more powerful than the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but it paled in comparison to the Xbox One and the PS4. The Wii U simply couldn't run the majority of the third party titles out there.
In my opinion, the NX will succeed if Nintendo forgets about third party titles and releases a relatively steady stream of first party titles. Regardless, I probably won't purchase it. I'm with Sony now. I tried so hard to stay with Nintendo, but they let me down.
My current avatar is Gyro Zeppeli from the popular manga Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. He's my favorite character. I love his optimism, dry humor, and his ability to do considerable damage even without a stand.

SPLATOON! wait, what?
I agree with all* you have said, except the price drops. The Wii U started at $350.00 or $375.00 for extras. Now, it is sold in bundles for $300.00 with your choice of Super Mario U bundle, Wind Waker HD bundle, or Splatoon bundle.** So they kind of have something for price drops where you can get the game you are most likely to buy with it, in it. They don't do third party games, and I have no idea, but I'm assuming it's because they don't want to be like the other consoles. but yeah, over priced accessories. I think it's like $15 just so your 3DS doesn't die on you..... Just why.... But yes with everything else you said, I agree. I am quite scared for nintendo as it falls into new hands. Only time will tell what happens. R.I.P. Iwata
*Not really, or why would I correct some of what you said?
**I think there is a Skylanders bundle, but we don't talk about that.

Was going to say Kid Icarus Uprising, I still play it to this day, frequently.
The 3ds is just as bad as the ds from the sounds of it as far as battery life goes. I remember coming out of bootcamp and buying
my first ds with pokemon pearl from a local wal-mart. I was taking greyhound home and I wanted something fun for the 3 day trip.
The charge only lasted a few hours and this was before greyhound had added charging stations to each seat, so I ended up
having to wait between major stops since there were always the needless stops out in the middle of no where. I still got about
10 hours of play during those 3 days but hardly any sleep and endless corn fields had the remaining 68 hours pure hell.
There are currently 2 handheld consoles on the market. The Playstation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. I own both. My New Nintendo 3DS XL's battery lasts 7-9 hours. My Playstation Vita's battery lasts 6 hours. I ask you, which handheld has terrible battery life?
Also, no offense, but, if you though your DS was going to last 3 days, you're insane. Even if you can charge it from time to time. Constant playing will drain your battery, regardless of the system.

No offense taken. That is a very good point. My DS only offered on average 2-3 hours of life so perhaps it was just a
malfunction or a bad battery. I have never had any impulse to even look the ps vita's way. But if it has a 6 hour life
that is actually reliably obtainable I might give it some consideration. Also the real problem for me is the lack of titles
that I would enjoy playing.
Meh, I like the Vita. The difference in power between Sony's handheld and Nintendo's is shockingly clear once you play both of them. Also, I can think of 15 titles that I either want or have already purchased and enjoyed on the Vita. It may not have the 3DS's library, but it certainly does have some appealing titles. If you ever decide to abandon Nintendo like I did, I recommend Sony.

I have never been a real dedicated console gamer, I probably won't buy a NX for the same reason I wouldn't buy a Wii U, $300 for more video games isn't worth it to me.
I've always hated the "power" argument when it comes to games and consoles, Too many games could easily have been made for a pre-existing system with out compromising the gameplay (all I really care about) Nintendo always managed to make it feel like they were actually adding something with their gimmicks, Motion controls, the ds screen, the wii-U gamepad, ect.
graphics have always been a style thing. There is no direct relationship with the number of pixels used in an image and its perceived quality.
So I have been keeping tabs on the new Nintendo system since I first found evidence of it a few months back. Obviously
speculation and hints were all that existed prior to that. My main problems with this new console is that Nintendo
had already expressed great concern that their capabilities would be undermined by higher prices and less overall
power compared to other current gen consoles. Nintendo even stated early on that if they did make a new console
that it would be their last as they have become more comfortable with handheld systems.
From what I understand the NX is due to release next year. Only one title has been confirmed thus far which is
Dragonquest. Of course I imagine there will be a handful of titles Nintendo has kept alive that will see a day 1
release but what are we to expect? The main arguement I keep seeing is third party support. Everyone wants it
but third party games have never been Nintendo's thing.
With the fact that virtual reality gaming will most likely not be featured on the NX can it truly compete with the xbox one
and ps4? Nintendo has a lot of ground to cover and a really large bill to fit if they want to even be in the same league.
But is that too much? Current gen consoles will likely outshine the NX in every way which begs the question, what
on earth is Nintendo going to do?
More dry remakes of mario party or mario racing? Another dull entry to otherwise superior titles? Every time
Nintendo has attempted to reimagine a game it has sold poorly in comparison to previous entries. So how can
Nintendo break this? There are so many barriers for Nintendo to overcome. To be honest I don't really care.
I have been a die-hard fanboy since I was young and I will most likely pick up the NX day 1 if possible.
I do enjoy SOME of the remakes but personally I want to see that inginuity put to the test. Give us something to
drool over Nintendo! and while your at it can you please breath life into the WiiU?

I 100% agree. I'm not personally a sports fan but I know how much of an impact those types of games have. Also some good
FPS games could turn Nintendo straight around like when Metroid Prime hit. The graphics at the time and even to this day were
amazingly stunning but a COD or Gears or even as much as I hate to say it GTA could bring a lot of life to the new console.
I truly hope that Nintendo can deliver the goods if nothing else just this one last time. I am extraordinarily hyped and yet I
am cautious. I may not have played the WiiU but the evidence of how it failed is obvious and I don't want to watch the franchise
I grew up with fail so misearably again.

For the NX I do personally agree that Nintendo needs to focus on their own titles first and foremost. The likelihood of that
seems pretty high, but if they do decide to cater to the fans and invest in 3rd party games it will give reason for people
to actually nab an NX. Yet still I just don't see the new console being very popular at all. It will definitely be the highest
price out of the current gen consoles and will most likely have a pretty weak starting line-up. For Nintendo this is going
to be like a nightmare come true. Gamer award systems, monthly free games, cheaper pricing on consoles and equipment,
fanboys and fangirls who have opted out of Nintendo, the already failing current console in the WiiU and so much more.
Is the damage done? Is there any way for the franchise that revolutionized gaming to bounce back? Everything has an end.

For me it will depend on how Nintendo does with the NX because xbox is really getting stale for me. Most games just seem/feel
like reskinned older games. For Example we got Metro 2033 free for Gold and I can see why. It has a fairly difficult controller
setup and is more like a sort of doom mixed with a bit of fallout. You would think a combo of such games would be pretty
good but it is just extremely linear and poorly scripted.
For me, I have never cared for many games. I'm kinda picky about what I play. So if Nintendo can reach back inside the
heart of my nostalgic side then I will definitely stick with it to the end, but if the NX just turns out to be too gimmick heavy
with no focus on actual gameplay then I might just need to step on out of gaming entirely until Nintendo decides to become
3rd party themselves.
I could just imagine how awesome that would be being able to get my Zelda fix on either platform or pokemon. I would
definitely be sitting here quite literally with wallet in hand and the cliche "Shut up and take my money!" printed on a t-shirt.
The only problem I would have is dlc and how it was handled. So long as part of a game is not locked behind a pay wall
that would otherwise prevent completion I will be happy. #Achievementcatch'emall.
