And playing as non-humans would be allowed. I just wasn't sure what you meant by "new"
And no orphans, emos, etc. Mary Sues are bad.
~DED
anyways, what if (now I'm not saying my app would be like this) There was someone who was an orphan, but still optimistic about life? Still somewhat not a drag, ect.?
For an event, I'm thinking a meteor or some sort of cataclysm would be the easiest way, but that is overused. Alien species planting is possible and intriguing (like placing new species on a planet kind-of like in Spore). I think that would be interesting, but I don't want to convey a Sci-fi idea, and a follow-up would be required.
Due to what people would be needing of doing (you try overthrowing a former legend turned dictator that is a puppet for some more insidious person or thing), having them be capable of being skilled although they would only be skilled in certain areas is completely reasonable.
I've been wanting to break out of my strategy rut for a while, and I've been having a hankering for some high fantasy for a while now. Consider me onboard.
So far I've only skimmed a bit of the first page and it seems from looking at that page that the main argument is what the role of magic, if any, should be. I agree with oZode that magic is a very easy thing for RPers to abuse. The way I've perceived magic is that it's actually a kind of ambient energy present throughout the universe that the average human has no perception or control over. Some humans, however, can perceive and control magic through study, meditation, technology, inborn ability, etc. A mage is someone who has devoted his/her life to the study and mastery of the ability to control this force, be it for deeper understanding of the universe, desire for power, etc. Just to get good enough with magic that you can toss a fireball across a room on occasion requires mastery and understanding of magic that a lifetime of devotion and practice to attain, which is why mages are typically going to look like Merlin. A good mage is therefore pretty dangerous, but is probably going to be pretty frail and so they'll still be something that can be killed by someone who knows what they're doing. The kind of overpowered magic like forcefields that protect the caster, ripping open portals to Hell, and obliterating castle walls takes several lifetimes of study to master - making it so only some kind of ungodly lich-esque abomination could perform this kind of magic. Doing magic like this would allow people to have their Gandalf characters while keeping them competitive with your sword-swingers and whatever else you have.
well...I guess, but that would do nothing to stop the "Imma master" players...then people could just say that they've been training with magic all their life, and as a result, start off already OP...you get my point?
See the post above yours.
I think the idea of introducing magic to the real world could go in a really interesting direction, but considering the average RPer in the MCF, you'll really quickly get some cliche ******** like:
anyways, I know that wasn't your app...and...we're still brainstorming here, according to the OP, magic will only be capably weilded by a trusted mod of the topic.
My suggestion: The kingdom is being plagued by some kind of troublemaker of some sort, maybe a heretic or false prophet who has been stirring up heresy, dissent, rebellion, and all sorts of other things that are bad for a prosperous kingdom. The king has tried sending in the armies to garrison towns that he and his henchmen are causing trouble in and has sent his own men and spies out to destroy him, but they all wind up in alleyways with their throats slit or hanging from trees in the morning. Even the king's own soldiers have come to fear his supposed power. The king is now at wit's end, and has no where else to turn. He places an enormous bounty on the heretic's head - enough to make many men fabulously wealthy for their entire lives. Enter our noble, or perhaps not-so-noble heroes.
Hundreds of people across the land take up arms in quest to hunt down the heretic rabble-rouser with the noble intent of cleansing the kingdom of his lies and the less-noble goal of making a mint in the process. Our heroes are part of two parties searching for the heretic - one a noble Lord of the Rings-esque band of knights and paladins willing to do whatever it takes to cleanse the land of the heretic's lies... the other a rag-tag troop of misfits and ne'er-do-wells out to lynch the heretic and make a fortune. While the two parties hunt throughout the kingdom seeking the heretic and his men, their paths meet on multiple occasions. Instead of cooperating, the two groups of players butt heads with one another and end up trying to one-up each other just as much as they try to hunt down the heretic and his men.
All the while, the players, along with the entire kingdom, learn that this heretic is no mere rabble-rouser, and that his lies are anything but...
I think the with most people wanting to be some teenager or young adult means they will probably rather be an archer, thief or warrior (even than only adept at best) since they tend to be younger. So that would you can't have someone's who is young AND experienced.
@Gorgen
Love it. Encourages PvP and a start that works well although I hope the other ideas seen fit in as well.
In the mean time, as the players try to hunt down this heretic (and fight cultists who follow his wicked word) they probably would come across a golden statue of this glorious hero who lived centuries ago who did all these awesome feats and all than after doing something bad (nothing major, possibly something as the result of hubris) was exiled.
This would lead to the fallen hero villain idea you may have seen talked about.
Glad that you appreciate it. I think that the best, most captivating stories in RPs are the ones that the players come up with themselves. This is why I like sandbox/strategy RPs so much. The thought of combining an open-plot adventure with individual storytelling is exciting. I really hope this or something similar is what gets decided upon.
The ancient fallen hero idea is absolutely doable. The lore of this world, the battles, the adventures, etc. are all going to be up to the players. This is why I think we should keep the background lore of the world as bare-bones as possible at the start: so the players can flesh it out in character during the RP.
anyways, what types of creatures / things / classes would you be able to play as? Or are we going to get rid of the class system (preffered by me...I don't like having to describe myself as a specific class)
Big difference.
This isn't a game RP, it's a story RP random. I don't think there will be a class system at all, just what's your character?
so...what would be available to play as? If it's all human, you can pretty much count me out...but, OP (the original postER in this case, not original post) says that inhuman things would be allowed...
They are diverse in appearance, easy to clean, very effective at what they do as well as adaptable and so on.
Also are the best looking race.
I'd suggest limiting it to Tolkienian fare and standard Western mythological beasts: elves, dwarves, men... maybe some centaurs or even the occasional satyr (because centaurs are awesome and satyrs are pretty cool too). None of this half-man half-fox/dragon ******** I've seen in some RP's.
But I have to agree with oZode. You better be down with the human master race, filthy elfman.
What is this, World of Warcraft? **** classes, they restrict creativity.
as for you, oZode, I never said there was anything wrong with humans, I just don't like to RP as them, just not what I like to do, is all.
What kind of race did you have in mind?
though, I'd settle for lizardman, or something similar...but as you've said, you don't want that stuff in there.
I'd also settle for phoenixes, granted that they, unlike the ones of myth, and in books, ect., cannot reivive.
