Well, I've been lurking around the Forum Games section here for a while now. And so far I've noticed a rather present Role-Playing community. Although loosely connected. There are a fair few active Role-Playing threads in these parts. So, as a Role-Player who's RPing has spanned more than a year now I'd like to see this take a logical step forward. And that is to present to the community a thread dedicated to the RP community.
At the moment this will remain stripped down. I'm not aware of how big the Role-Playing community is or how succesfull this thread will become. But judging by how we don't have a dedicated forum it's probably not that large. Until it grows or I become more confident I'll expand the thread to include tips and tricks and all of that. (EDIT: As of 8/29 I'm building a glossary of RPing terms. This paragraph is considered for removal due to irrelevance.)
For now, let us have this for RP discussion and planning. Have an idea floating around but want to share it first? Then feel free. Maybe you want to see if you can pick up people for an existing Role-Play? That'll work too. Perhaps you have an OC you'd like to share, or want to create one but don't know how to start? Well, that's acceptable. Or maybe you want to discuss a concept that will be used in RP and want to get some third-party oppinions on it.
Hopefully in the future I can expand this to become a full guide. Including tips, tricks, genre information, glossary, etc. But that's only until things grow. Perhaps get some others to write up sections and/or provide feed-back on existing areas. Kind of like a Wikipedia but with an editor that needs to approve changes.
Well... With that, what to do now. Could introduce myself if only because I'm a Narcist like that.
I've been a Role-Player for maybe over a year now. My earliest experinces with it go further back but I never thought much of it. Back then it was merely posting in third person on a discussion thread with everyone else while we god-mod ourselves to glory and hilarity. I fully jumped into Role-Playing when a small friend-oriented forum I was on set up and played a few rounds of Mafia/Werewolf. These were played in a narrative format like a good RP and story and went over well for a long while.
Eventually, these did come to die out. But I still wanted to play more. I bounded off to another larger forum - The Spore Forums - and re-built the Mafia/Werewolf game there. It went through several version before choking to death.
While trying to get games of those active, I participated in several historical RPs. Some died, others grew. But helped foster my interest strategy/civ RolePlays. One of the first being a little RP called Settlers in Yaman, which worked off of 16th-17th century tech and pitted several factions against each other for control of a mystical island. This grew and then naturally died.
I made several goes at making strategy/civ RPs myself. Learning from my experinces in SoY and another larger-scale Civ/Strat/Political RP set in a fantasy world based in Late-Roman era tech/Early Medieval era tech. The world of that RP was set after a great disaster which shattered the previous civilization and hid or destroyed many of its remnants, thus de-evolving the human race.
Later and after much maturing I came to what I consider my crown-jewel. The RP Precipice of War. Set in an alternate 1970's, it gives players the choice to play as existing countries or a rebel faction seeking independence or reform. In this, World War 1 ended in an uneasy cease-fire and the war had claimed the likes of figures like Adolf Hitler and Leon Tromptsky and Lenin, thereby keeping WW2 from happening in the forties and greatly altering the technological and political climate.
The RP was originally made by the guy that ran the far-post-apcolypse RP. But he announced he would no longer be active and I was voted as its new GM. It has since grew to almost a hundred pages. It's also helped raise the bar on what I expect to see in RPs of this genre.
So yea, I dabble in RPs of the Political, Strategical, and Civ-building genre/aspects. I also have a thing for long-winded, detailed posts.
RP DEFINITIONS
OP (.n): Opening post, opening poster. Synonymous with GM (Grand Master). Begins and runs the thread.
Mod (.n): Co-runner of the thread. Appointed by OP/GM to help enforce the rules should the RP become large.
Post (.n): Something made (posted) by an RPer to carry on the RP or discuss the story.
IC: In-Character. The narrative and dialog that carries the story along.
OOC: Out of character. Discussion not carrying the story. Generally discussing the direction of plot or elements of the RP. Can be carried out in the RP thread or a different and official OOC thread of that RP. OOC is generally marked by parenthesis or by including OOC before you write the OOC.
Informal RP (.n): Alternatively referred to as an illiterate RP. These RPs have lax posting and grammar rules. Posts are often short and basic
Formal RP (.n): Alternativly referred to as a literate RP. Tight posting rules regarding grammar, spelling, and structure. Posters are expected to write long, multi-paragraph posts with a handle on grammar and spelling. Balance of descriptive narrative and/or dialog.
Narrator (.n): Anyone detailing the actions of NPCs and the environment.
MetaGaming (.v): The use of knowledge not known to the character or faction. Like if a trap was planned earlier in the RP and the affected character was too far away to over-hear or know of this. Having that affected character somehow know about the trap (or avoid it based on illogical intuition) then that's meta-gaming. As it was put to me in another guide:
To use a popular example, the Emperor may have told Luke that the Death Star is operational, but Lando (who was lightyears away at the time) must find that out for himself. The guy controlling Lando may know that the Rebels are about to get hammered, but Lando does not; ergo, no counter-action can be taken. To act as though he magically overheard the conversation would be absurd and rude to whoever was playing the Emperor, who probably spent much time laying the trap. If the Falcon’s sensors detected that the shield was still up, so that the Rebel fleet barely manages to avoid splattering on it like bugs on a windshield, that would be more permissible, but only if the plot warranted it. APRL’s qualify here as well.
Godmodding (.v): Taking control of a character or faction not owned by you. This can range from writing out their immediate response to taking full control for your purposes (i.e: Bob goes to stab Steve, the guy who controls Bob writes in that Steve was too slow and got stabbed. This isn't fair for the guy controlling Steve and godmodding).
Figured I might come her as you are, I am currently in the Precipice of war one and as a testimonial, I guess, it has been a wild ride. Some times good, some times bad, I will always admire it as a great roleplay, even if it comes to a dying age, which I hope it doesn't.
I certainly hope this thread gains popularity. I've yet to see a roleplaying discussion thread yet, and as an RPer of a few years I think it'd be good to have one.
You do seem to make it fairly obvious that you knew what you were going to do, it is an aspect of your posts that definitely is enticing.
I have a direction, but most of the places I'm going is far off.
I want to do a few posts that help develop Chairman Hou as a character. Going into detail on his family, hobbies, vices, and all of that. Most of the leaders I see in these RPs just seem to serve as a face to the nation, they're never flushed out like they're a human. If I do it right, I could make it a significant emotional event when I retire him, and then eventually have him pass away.

I do believe i'll have a flask of the house's brand of health potion.
But first, allow me to introduce myself.
I am Rhynerd, the creator of a progressing series of Rp's I prefer to give the overall title of "The God's of the Mind", among other "side" Rp's such as my current(ly dying) Rp that goes the title "A Land Basks in the Past"
It will be my pleasure to help advance the RP community.

admittedly, it was a **** move on my part, although I enjoyed doing it.

That always seems to tempt me to war, I like it when I constantly check for their newest move and such. Whereas now it is a little slower paced.
Bandwidth exceeded.
Such is the way of war...
Then you got someone like me who makes plans that span several RP decades, so then I have something to do when nothing's going on relevant to me.
