There has been, in recent times, a distinct lack of space operas on this roleplaying forum. Today, we enter a brave new age, where Mission will fill this void, with adventure, plot, and character development.
The Ulysses XVI is leaving Earth's military port tomorrow. Its skeleton crew will embark on the ship's first expedition, a six month journey to the battlefields where the Empire of Humanity faces off in prolonged skirmishes against the Roxani Coalition. The ship's purpose is to deliver a new, experimental weapon to the human forces, hopefully breaking the deadlock which has sat over the war for months.
It was the year 2332 when humans first expanded beyond their solar system, having finally made a variation of the Alcubierre warp drive into a reality. Already well practised with the colonization of their own solar system, humans soon expanded to nearby star systems as well, encountering, for a time, no new lifeforms. The human race enjoyed a period of prosperity and general peace for decades, as many obstacles of the past were eliminated. Population constraints and a lack of resources were no longer issues.
Space did have its mysteries. Some planets reported UFO sightings, but no more frequently than Earth had in earlier times. Explorers sometimes cited strange objects in the depths of space. Other times, they never returned. However, humanity had accepted that space would be a dangerous place, and it was willing to pay a few small tributes to the void in the form of lost cargo ships in return for the new golden age of civilization.
Albatross was a planet with an average distance from earth of five months in travel time. It was naturally similar to Earth in many regards, but had never developed life. Terraforming allowed the planet to become an earth analogue, with a selected variety of organisms. It became an ideal destination for settlers, a launching ground for future expansionist expeditions, and a local hub for culture, manufacturing, trade, and politics in its region. Its population was two and a half billion by the end of the 24th century.
In 2407, Albatross was attacked. Survivors from the capital city recounted waves of agile ships laying waste to everything with lasers and bombs. Albatross' defence force, a small fleet of lightly-armed spacecraft meant for policing the streets, were decimated in the first attack, and larger defences - guns situated on the planet's three moons - were destroyed as the attack commenced. The planet was held for a month, until a force comprised of the region's planetary militias arrived. The invaders retreated almost instantaneously, only putting up enough of a fight for their ground-based troops to escape.
Smaller targets were raided in the ensuing months, until a retreating group was tracked to a distant region. It was already known from studying the few corpses left after the Albatross occupation that the enemy was comprised of several distinct alien species. Several liberated prisoners, claiming to have spoken with the aliens, called them the Roxani. Now, scouts reported that they had discovered at least the tip of a densely inhabited region from which their enemy seemed to originate.
There had been talk, before the attacks, of uniting all the human settlements under a shared government. Now that they had a common enemy with an unknown degree of strength and hostility, this process became far easier. The Empire of Humanity was formed under the patriotic fervour of protecting the peace and prosperity which had thus far been achieved, and under this new government, a single military body was formed. Earth became the central spire of this interstellar union, while other seats of governance across the empire began to formalize themselves.
The war between the Empire of Humanity and the Roxani Coalition was fought for fifteen years. Technology advanced rapidly on both sides; occasionally, it advanced from one side to the other as raids allowed new weapons and tools to be adopted from the enemy. Some human groups grew tired of the war's longevity, but the war did not stop. In March 2422, the fourth battle of Albatross began. Though it had been reduced to gravel and strays in both the first and second battles, it remained a symbol of humanity's resilience against the Roxani. The Roxani, too, seemed to treat it with greater importance than they would other previous targets.
Today is January 17th, 2423. The crew of the Ulysses XVI gathers at the base of the space elevator which will bring them to Earth's military port, a space station from which military vessels like their own are launched.
Character Creation:
All characters are members of the crew of the Ulysses XVI. They may fill any of the following roles:
Chief of Staff (essentially a second-in-command; oversees the other staff of the ship.)
Medical Officer (the doctor, of course.)
Munitions Technician (primary purpose being to ensure that the ship's cargo doesn't explode or suffer damage which renders it useless. Mostly the first one, though.)
Soldier 1 (Theoretically, they are present for the worst case scenario, that the ship enters combat with the Roxani or other antagonistic forces. Also, to stop any traitors onboard the ship.)
Soldier 2 (Theoretically, they are present for the worst case scenario, that the ship enters combat with the Roxani or other antagonistic forces. Also, to stop any traitors onboard the ship.)
Chief Engineer (all the ship-fixing stuff goes here.)
Subordinate Engineer (secondary engineering. Not necessary, but more than welcome.)
Pilot (generally a one-person job for these ships, but there is room for a subordinate here. They handle navigation and communications.)
More opportunities to join will appear later, if the roleplay is successful.
If you would like to keep certain aspects of your character as a secret, PM me, Commandosaurus, and I'll be more than happy to incorporate this into the story. This might include your character secretly being a traitor, or having an ulterior motive, or a hidden portion to their backstory. So long as I am made aware of it, it should be fine to include.
After applying and being accepted, you will receive a private message which will include a secret only known by the character in your chosen role.

Appearance: Standing at 5'6", Dony has lightly tanned skin and a few scars from various minor accidents. None of them are serious. He has dark hair that goes to his shoulders and dark green eyes. Nothing about him really stands out, though, aside from his scars.
Backstory: Dony really is a nobody. He wasn't very popular, nor exceptionally smart. He always seemed to keep to himself. He got the job done, and then went about his own business. He has few friends, and none of them really know him very well. Dony is an extraordinarily private man, but always polite and respectful. He doesn't share his past, and doesnt like it when others try and share theirs with him.
Other: I will PM you shortly.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Puella Magi Madoka Magicka is an awesome, feel-good, cutesy anime. You should watch it!
Appearance: Icarus is a rather tall man, with short, neatly kept black hair, pale skin, and pale, icy blue eyes. He has a chiseled face that may be classified as oblong, with a firm, rather square jawline. His features are quite sharp and defined, and are decently proportionate with the rest of his face. Aboard the Ulysses XVI, Icarus wears the standard uniform of a medical officer, though he often wears a black trench coat as well.
History: Icarus Fverilin, born to a fairly wealthy and privileged family, never expected to end up in space. Oddly enough, Icarus hates space, making his presence aboard the Ulysses XVI quite strange. As a young boy, Icarus aspired to become a skilled doctor or surgeon, his hopes set high. He pursued his passion with the help of his family’s wealth, becoming quite successful in medical school and soon graduating. However, several years into his career, Icarus was found guilty of the theft of confidential information and other important data, despite his insistence that he had been framed, which was never confirmed nor found to be apocryphal. Immediately forced from his job, and with a serious criminal record, Icarus found himself with nowhere left to turn but to the position as a medical officer amongst the fleets of the Empire of Humanity. Icarus had always hated the idea of being in space, surrounded by nothing but emptiness and confined to a small, flimsy metal box packed with others who he would be forced suffer under for months on end, but had no other options. Of course, Icarus regretted his decision from the moment he made it, but, as aforementioned, it was his only hope.
Other: I have much more history to add, but that will be revealed in many flashbacks during the actual roleplay. I have a feeling I'd completely ruin it if I tried to put it into application-form.

Name:
Riddare Arion
Age:
24
Role:
Chief of Staff
Appearance:
A body of lean muscle towering at just above 6', Riddare basically defines collateral damage, scars littering his body from the events that took place in 2407. He has a slight stubble that caresses a defined jawline, dark, piercing eyes, and a large scar that runs across his left cheek. His neutral smile tends to be a slight smirk, as if he tries to enjoy or laugh about any situation. His hair is somewhere between short and medium, combed messily to the left, but it's quite clear he doesn't bother with it too much. When not wearing his chief uniform he wears simple light clothes that help define his muscle slightly.
Backstory:
Riddare grew up on Albatross with his family, which included both his parents and his older sister. While his family were settlers and earned a living by cultivating crops or any other farm duties, Riddare felt more at home in the main cities. Thus as "rewards" the family would travel to the city and enjoy their day with Riddare. He was fascinated by the corporations, believing the ability to lead and inspire is what lead to innovation and expansion. So at a young age, he made it his main goal to become the owner of a corporation.
At the age of 8, Riddare and his family were visiting the city for a day trip. This also happened to be the day the Roxani Coalition decided to show themselves and attack. Of course the main cities were attacked first, if Riddare and his family were back at their home they might have been okay but, it wasn't long before his parents were struck. He called for help from anyone in the panic, his older sister was no where to be found. He witnessed corporation owners, business heads, all safely escaping the chaos with their huge influx of money. No one came to help, and Riddare became resentful to the cities and the corporations that sat in them.
Among the crossfire he surprisingly survived, almost getting struck several times, one time leaving an evident scar across his left cheek. He cowered over his parent's bodies and mourned as the chaos around him ensued. Eventually it was over, or at least the initial attack began to cease. At some point Riddare was swept off his feet and taken away from his parents. He ended up with plenty of other survivors, and while some managed to talk to others he remained isolated and by himself. It was there he decided he wanted to fight back, and being the young kid he was, he ran up to the military and offered his service. Of course, the war was no place for a child, but in the years to pass, after the attack ended, he joined up with the military anyway.
He served as a simple soldier at first, only at the age of 18, patrolling low-risk areas. Over time he began work on the three moons of Albatross, and eventually ended up on the space stations. It was here, at the age of 20, where he tried out to become a pilot. The years of military gave him more agility and perception over strength, and he found himself piloting ships for a couple more years, until a small incident caused a member of one of his ships to be sent to the medical officers. Fate decided it was time for him to reunite with his older sister, who had been working as a medical officer for years, and survived the attack in 2407 just as Riddare had. This connection allowed him to reach his next role much quicker, and at the age of 23 he became a Chief of Staff, learning the basics of what each task on the ship handled.
He came to the conclusion that he would make it his main goal not to become like the business men who were selfish and saved themselves. He aimed to lead and inspire, in order to achieve innovation and expansion, like he wanted all those years ago. And after a year of serving as a Chief, possibly one of his most important missions took place. It is early 2423, and Riddare, along with the rest of the crew, will soon board the Ulysses XVI.
Other:
I will PM some kinda-maybe-important-but-probably-not-too-much information about Riddare.
As we await our final applicants, here are some images. The first three serve as floor plans for the Ulysses XVI, and the final one is a rough representation of the basic uniform prescribed to members of the military. There would be small distinguishing features for each of the different roles.
This is not dead, but we're still awaiting at least one more member. I hope no one has disappeared, but if you have changed your mind about participating, please let me know.
Autumn stands at a solid 5'11, long messy redheaded hair (It's messy not curly), pale skin, green eyes, freckles across the face, white lips, and that's practically it when it comes to facial features, she's the typical pale redheaded girl, the girl next door type of deal, except she's not, she's a pilot. Her right arm on the other hand is burned from finger to just by the arm pit, completely red and mullered from it's look. She usually wears a coat to hide this anyway.
Backstory:
Autumn was young little lass when she grew her love for they sky, and that love made her chase her dream to be the best damn pilot the world has ever seen. She graduated all of her years with honours just for the sake to get a scholarship in a piloting school, and anyone who means anything knows that to be a pilot is a difficult thing to achieve academically. She did achieve a scholarship to a flight school, she did rather well in her entrance exam but in the night of August 5, 2404, there was a party and she was in this building. That party was to commemorate a piloting instructor who was leaving the school, and the hall was set on fire, Autumn wish she knew why, but she still doesn't. She almost made it out when the building exploded, it burned her arm but she was alive.
Did the accident stop her from achieving to be the greatest pilot? No, it did delay her a good 4-5 months but she got there in the end. She continued her studies, and she was mostly praised by her full arm scar, it wasn't like anyone was going to survive that the way she did. Autumn did graduate as the valedictorian of her batch, which made her quite the pilot.
Luckily, she wasn't exactly caught in large portion of the crossfire in Albatross, she lived there but she lucky enough not to get hurt. Her dreams grew and so did her experience, she wanted to keep people safe by being the best damn pilot the world has ever seen.
With that, she was tasked to board the Ulysses XVI, no not just to board but to fly the thing, provide evasive maneuvers if needed.
Also on a random thought directed to commando, would Albatross have the same calendar? Yknow being a different planet and al
There would be an independent calendar, but it would be rather unused. Most people would refer to the more common earth-derived calendar, just for the sake of compatibility with the rest of the empire. Some groups, opting for more independence, would make use of the Albatrossian calendar (the same would apply to any other worlds).
To everyone: expect the IC thread to be up by tomorrow.
Finally back. Apologies for my absence, though it seems I didn't miss all too much.
If what we're seeing is a lack of interest this soon out of the gate, then for those of you who are still around in some capacity, please let us know that you're not interested in continuing. If it's just unexpected absences, no problem. We can pick up as soon as people have time.
In the meantime, anyone is free to respond whenever they so choose.
Due to a lack of activity, I think I'll give us some closure and suggest that this is now a dead roleplay. Sorry we couldn't get it off the ground, everyone - I was really looking forward to it.
