"Alrighty then," he digs through his pouch again for a bit before procuring the coins, dropping them onto the original pile of coppers. "By the way, any idea what this quarantine's about? I've heard a lot of different reasons for why it might be in place, but they've all been from people who weren't from around here," he tightens the strings on his money pouch- having paid for everything he planned on purchasing- as he continues, "I'd be interested in the thoughts of a local."

Renard's cape flutters in the breeze. He frowns, at the sight of patrons leaving the inn, at the emptiness of his coin pouch, and at having been drenched by the now-fading rain. It wasn't a very good day, and Renard was largely unenthusiastic as a result.
"Can't be helped," sighs Renard, putting away his coin pouch, "bribery was the only way to get into this god-forsaken town."
Renard turned his attention back to the inn and the patrons hurriedly leaving it. He shook his head; he had to focus on the matter at hand. The rumours surrounding this town.
"They're leavin' real quick because of somethin'. You'd have to be strange or ballsy to stay behind. So that begs the question: have I missed the party, or has it just started?"
Renard half-smiles and opens the doors to the inn.

Boris the Bonecrusher falls into a deep sleep in his room. He is a loud sleeper, his snoring causes the whole inn to vibrate. He dreams of cotton candy and birthday cakes with extra icing.
Though it wasn't the earliest of times, Amanda had just arrived in the inn, it was late and water was dripping from her hat as she stepped through the door frame. Lively, quite lively little place even with the few amount of people in it, it was still pretty homely. Amanda shuffled her way towards the counter, towards the innkeeper to be exact, she plotted to stay the night and try to leave to at least. Though- there was an odd presence in this little town, something she couldn't ignore, and it was almost like it was keeping her from leaving. Whatever it was- she can deal with it in the morning.
"One room for the night." Said Amanda as she tapped on the desk to gain the man's attention. "And maybe the finest alcohol you can give me."
"The quarantine, eh? Well, lately various things have been happening that are... well, not normal. The weather here changes on a dime, snowstorms followed by heatwaves, creatures roam the streets at night, and citizens vanish into thin air. Most of the folks have either left willingly, vanished unwillingly, or stuck around for other reasons." The Innskeeper looks around a bit, then shrugs.
"I myself have only really witnessed the absurd weather, but based on the sounds I hear outside at night, the other things are probably true as well. It's why most folk either leave when it becomes nighttime, or only show up when it becomes nighttime to seek shelter, some of whom are more shady than others."
Hannah walked about the town for a bit, taking note of the distinct lack of citizens in the streets, probably due to the cold, but she thought she had to ask someone who knew more about the town then she did.Hannah noticed some strange people going into the nearby golden penguin inn, and sits down for a bit, observing what is going on for a few minutes before walking up to the Innkeeper. "Why is town so strange? May I stay here for the night?"

Apparently this is what some of my friends think of me here:
Chisille begins licking the plate clean of any meaty juice that was left after she finished her meal off, however as night grew closer and closer, so did the time that the humans would fall asleep. She knew that was both good and bad. Good because afterwards there was much less chance that she would be caught stealing food. Bad because they first needed to find a place to sleep, and she could hear some of them on this floor. It didn't help that there was very loud snoring from one of the rooms so listening for footsteps was a harder task then usual.
She would come back later to this place... when most of them had dozed off. For now she rushed over to the window, jumping over the bed as she did so. Some of the other shelters looked good to hide in at least. She would have to make sure there were no other humans in them, as she suspected from before. This time however, with the feeling of her strength returning to her she felt a bit braver when it came to facing the idea of that.
Spreading her wings wide, she glided down over to one of the other buildings, landing in the newly formed mud from the recent rain just outside a window. She jumped through the window and into the house, leaving muddy footprints on the window and a few splashes on the wall that anyone observant enough can see. Inside she began looking around for a snug spot to curl up in.
Betty finishes milking her cow Twix one evening then sneaks into her daddies Alchemy lab to try some of the potions and spells from the pocket book that had been handed down to her. She practiced magic almost every day, sometimes more than once a day, but usually she just failed miserable and caused weird things to happen. She once turned a chicken into a lamp post by mistake, and felt really bad about it, and kinda got into a lot of trouble since it was her daddies prize chicken and best egg layer. But Betty is determined to get good at being magical, even if its the last thing she does.
She turns to a random page, holding the book in one hand. She checks over her shoulder to make sure she wasn't followed, then starts reading a spell and making her own words up in the places where the written words were too faded to read properly.
These are something like the words she spoke (the words she made up are in italic):
"a peregrinatione moleculis ...innnn FORMIDULOSUS et ...blah blah blah civitatem temere ad... ...me"
Then something really weird happened. Everything in the Lab started to fade away. Everything went dark around her. Then, in a big puff of smoke, she appeared on the road of a cold dark town, in the rain, beside an inn called The Golden Penguin.
"Well my o my and gosh darn it!" Betty declares as she shoves her book back in her pocket, "that was like the coolest thing ever!"

As Renard expected, only strange and peculiar-looking individuals remained in the Golden Penguin Inn. The only local left was the innkeeper, who was currently being talked up, most likely with the same intention as Renard.
Renard frowns and takes an empty seat, eavesdropping in on any interesting conversations. He was never very charismatic.
A figure slowly nudges the inn's front door open, careful to avoid causing the hinges to creak. She steps through the doorway, making her way to an empty table to wait for the innkeeper to finish whatever conversation they were having. She neatly folds her gloved hands on the table, eyes darting about attentively.
The time had come. Little Annie needed to relieve herself. She had felt the sensation coming on for some time, and the sound of rain, although it was now easing off, had strengthened the need. Normally, Annie would find a secluded spot on a street or alleyway to do her business, but the drizzle, and the darkness that lurked in the shadows of town of late, created a great deal of difficulty in this matter.
Clenching the locket tightly in her hand, Annie listens to the rising whispers of her mothers voice once more -
Damn it, child, why do I suffer you? Can't you even hold it in for just a few hours more? Go then! Before you soil yourself. Speak with the innkeeper. Do your business! But speak to no other. You hear me? Speak with no one else!
She takes a deep breath in an attempt not to panic and manages to steady her nerves. Then she slowly, steadily, rises from her seat, avoiding eye contact with the others as she abandons the seclusion of her quiet corner. Treading ever so lightly, she makes her way across the room, keeping a wide birth from the tables and their occupants, moving with astounding, silent grace toward the innkeeper. There at last, she pauses just a moment to gather her thoughts, then lifts her head slowly, gazing directly into the innkeepers eyes to speak in a soft, smooth, unassuming voice;
"Do excuse my unsavory presence, sir, I do not wish to be a burden upon you, so please forgive my unsightly company if you may - and I assure you, as soon as the rain stops altogether I will be on my way, but I... I have found myself in a spot of minor bother. I..." She pauses, gently clearing her throat, and reveals; "...I am... in desperate need of relief. If you could please be so kind as to show me in the direction of your Privy. I would remain very much appreciative of your kindness..."
In shame, she hangs her head and awaits a response.

The interior of the house makes it clear that the building is abandoned, cobweb and dust everywhere, and some furniture has fallen over or looks very fragile. The inhabitants seem to either have left in a hurry, or vanished before they could leave.

The Innkeeper chuckles a bit.
"Don't worry, you can stay here if you can't find something else, and the toilet is over there." The innkeeper says before pointing to where the toilet presumably is.
The door of the Inn opens as a young man, presumably in his late teens enters the building. Carrying a large bag and wearing oversized clothes, he glances around the Inn, intently watching every person for a few seconds before changing his gaze to another person to observe them, doing so until he's taken the time to observe everyone currently in the Inn. Afterwards, he walks over to one of the tables, puts his bag on it, and sits down before taking a book out of the bag and writing something in it.

She had no such luck however, as judging by the state of the house any even remotely edible food that would've been here already would've been eaten by rats or rotted away until it was nothing but a pile of mold.
As she searched around the place she came across a bedroom. She knew it was a bedroom. She'd seen many of them before as she sometimes poked around the windows of houses for any food, when times got really tough just like this one. She had received more then her fair share of screams of terror or anger because of this. Fair share? She thought. There was nothing fair about being treated like this just because of the way she looked. Why did they always do this?
There upon whatever remained of the bed was what she was searching for. It looked covered in dust and rather moth-eaten, but the bedsheet was still good enough for her to use. She dragged it off with several tugs and growls, letting it settle down on top of her. There she lied down on the floor, clumsily wrapping the fabric around her with claw and teeth. She reminded herself that she had to be alert though. Sleeping would mean losing the chance she would have at getting another meal, plus any of those humans could come creeping around here and find her. She certainly did not want that.

Presumably for staying longer than the night. She gets a bit closer to the Innkeeper, whispering in his ear. "That could be counted as suspicious person right?" she refers to the young man who walked into the Inn.

"Hm. I see." He pauses for a moment before continuing, "Snowstorms... you know of any places I'd be able to get the clothes for one of those? I'm not sure how long I'll be here- potentially quite some time- and I don't think my current outfit will be sufficient for that sort of weather, heh..." He stops, thinking about what the potential source of such a thing could be. A wizard's experiments? Jack knew mages always wielded strange and mysterious powers, and abusing that power tended to have some nasty byproducts- some of which he had personally put down- but he had never heard of any mage powerful enough to change the weather of an entire region at will, or cause people to disappear without a trace. Summoning creatures was a possibility, but enough to warrant a quarantine was beyond anything he'd witnessed, especially combined with the other anomalies.

The Innkeeper looks at Betty, confused.
"How do you not know where you are? There's a quarantine barrier preventing people from entering."
"Well!" Betty tells the innkeeper, "I was just back home practicing a new spell, and I just kinda ended up here. Nothing much else to say about that. But it sure is a nice old place you have here! and seeing that I'm here now, how about a glass of fresh milk and a room for the night? How much will you pinch me for all that? Oh, and just by chance, you happen to know how far away the state of Alabama is from here? Cuz, gosh darn, that's where I'm from!"
Betty then takes another look around, and wonders a more important question... "...And I've just gotta ask, that hearth and all sure does provide a nice atmosphere to this here establishment, but haven't you kind folk got electricity at all??"

Renard pondered what the Innkeeper had said. It was true. Something was wrong with this town, and the government could not fix the problem, instead opting to quarantine the area. Renard had heard enough for his client. There was no need to put himself in danger. He would just have to escape and claim his pay.
But still, he was hesitant. He felt a moral obligation to get to the bottom of the matter. Perhaps he could save this town and redeem himself, having abandoned a burning city indirectly caused by him earlier in his life.
Renard sighed, inconspicuously cleaning his flintlock pistol under the table. He would have to see the strange occurences for himself.
