How is this idea for an RP? You work at a high-tech facility(name TBD) as one of their top scientists. Working on a machine to transfer multiple atoms through the barrier known as reality. Inter-dimensional Travel, basically. Called in late at night by another worker, apparently the machine's acting up. Walking into the building, a huge explosion shakes the ground. After a while, you wake up on a beach, with a pine forest a few feet away. Looking at your hands, you realize you aren't quite human.. some sort of fantasy race. Battle monsters, discover treasures, explore the abandoned world, find broken castles and ultimately a way home with your newfound abilities.
Now obviously the plot isn't finished, and I'll format the actual post nicely, but who would play this? I have a few questions first.
-Should I come up with the races that we've transformed into, to make sure they're balanced and similar to humans, but not too similar?
A bit, yeah.. though there would be ruins. Mythological creatures would also roam. Think cyclops, dragon, hydra and sea serpent. Things like that. There would be an underlying mystery element of what land you're in and why it's abandoned, while also building shelter and hunting for food.
Hmm... Sounds interesting, but you should work on the story a bit more.
Anyway, I think you should go for smaller creatures too. A cyclops and dragon is easy to hide from, but when you're chased by a humanoid creature that has a taste for flesh, you're in a lot of trouble...
'Sub' races? Is there such a thing? I think what you mean is closer to 'mutations', as the characters were originally human but have changed.
Anyway, it depends. If you pre-define a set, you'll be able to restrict players to certain play-styles that best fit said mutation, whereas allowing the player to choose gives the player more freedom to build a character that is good at what they want it to be good at, and create a character that fits the play-style they want to follow. If you choose the latter, you should use your ability as a GM to prevent characters from being too OP.
Looks great! All I'd suggest is evolving the plot a little and adding a few more creatures and give us (the others) an idea as to what kind of sub-races there are, but not srict limits.
Probably, but it takes a lot of explaining as why a Human would turn into either of those. A way around this is to say that the characters were not human to begin with (unless the player wants a human character)

It involves the plot a bit. To cut it short, a fantastic realm underwent some sort of apocalypse, killing off every humanoid race.
The races are there, because, while teleporting, an unknown side affect is taking a sample of the surrounding matter of living or previously living things to regenerate (May change it later.) It sampled organic matter of those extinct races from fossils, bones, and any other matter that survived this long.
Typically, when teleporting in our realm, it samples DNA from surrounding humans.
Another possibility for me to add are mutations instead. Physical and non-physical.

Teleportation fossil thing is 2confusing4me, my brain isn't built for that. It's probably only me though.
Mutations is probably easier to explain, but it's all up to you to decide. You're the GM, you're in control. You get to decide which method you deem best suitable.
Heh, to simplify it, it can't deconstruct an organism without finding it's same species, the cells in their body wouldn't be able to regenerate. To counter this, it seeks out another one of the same species and "sucks" rays and cells off of the surface of their skin on a molecular level. If it can't do that, it will find any other species nearly intelligent on the earth and attempt to do that. That resulted in humans being a different race, but still retaining their general physical characteristics.

Ooooh. That makes a lot of sense actually...
Have you decided on making a pre-determined set of races or are you allowing the players to choose?
Actually, I may just add a few common races. Gathering submissions would take a while, and I'd like to have the OOC thread by tonight, the IC thread by saturday. Fairies intrigue me though, what do they look like?

There are several interpretations, but my favorite one is this:
- They're about the same size as an 8-year old child, their only main external difference is the fact that they have wings.
- Fairies are idiots. Miniature attention spans, only care about playing pranks about others.
- Fairies are weak. Both physically and magically, they are easy to kill, but their main perk is this:
- Fairies can't die permanently. You can't kill an ice fairy permanently without getting rid of all the ice on the world. They can still die, but they'll reform after a few hours (depends on how close they are to their 'element'). Dying still hurts, of course, and they tend to forget whatever they were doing before they died.
Shameless bump.
You should wait 12 hours before bumping...
Anyways, what kind of survival? Gathering resources or scavenging for resources?

I was thinking more of classic fantasy races. Would that work at all?

Like elves, dwarves, goblins, orcs, etc.?

I think pre-determined will run better with the plot, but I'm not sure if people would join that.
Why not allow players to submit races, then you decide whether or not to greenlight them?
Great idea, actually.. thanks. Should I edit this post and create a general race format?
Yeah, sure. Go for it. I might submit a race too.
Inb4fairies. Fairies master race.
