The world beneath the ordinary is where magic thrives. Magic has always existed, but people's mastery of it has not. In fact there are many gaps in the magical knowledge of the human race. Every culture had its own version of magic, but they couldn't all be right, could they? But they all were, magic is more varied and diverse than anyone could imagine. At least that is what the current theory predicts. A lot of magical knowledge had been lost over the years, from the persecution of magic users to major disasters. And it is slowly being rediscovered.
The world has progressed since those time though, but magic still remain a mystery to most. Magic's existence is common knowledge, but very few actually know how to use it. As a result people are a little suspicious of those who use magic. They are no longer persecuted and people can practice magic in public without fear of repercussions. Almost anyone can learn to use magic, but it is very difficult without having a natural talent for it.
Technology it at the point where it is equivalent to Earth in the early twentieth century. Radio and print at the dominant methods of communication, the television has not been invented nor has the mobile phone. The Turing machine has not yet been thought of. Due to the lack of knowledge of magic, both technology and magic are almost as powerful as each other. However the more research that has been put into magic, the more powerful it seems.
Magic in this world exists everywhere and permeates everything, it is a sort of extra dimension to this world. One which cannot be perceived by ordinary means but can be interacted with. Magic is not static though, it flows around, sometimes collecting in areas and sometimes leaving them almost void of magic. However this does not last very long as magic, like pressure and temperature, it always tires to come to a state where it is equal across the universe. Whenever magic flows out of an area too quickly, strange phenomena occur. Like glowing lights, objects going missing, hauntings, etc. People can tap into this world of magic and use it, almost anyone can do this so long as they know how. But not that many people do.
The history of this world is similar to our own, but here are some recent events. About twenty years ago a major war happened, which sped up research into both magic and technology. It is currently peaceful, no wars are happening. But there are some tensions between some countries. Radio has been invented and is currently very popular. All men and women are considered equal. And the human race is still trying to figure out how the universe works. Magical creatures do exist but they are exceedingly rare.
Backstory:
It started like any other day did, the sun rose, people went about their daily business. Sorcerers and sorceresses practise their craft, some even using magic to entertain the public. But that day had one surprise, one horrible, terrifying surprise. And it happened all over the world, all at once. The First World Prediction they called it.
A psychic by the name of Nathan received the prediction. And he was not the only one; every fortune teller, psychic, medium, seer and clairvoyant from all over the globe received the prediction. It first started with a mild headache.
Nathan was walking down a busy street when it happened. The headache started and quickly worsened, until he couldn't do anything but hold his head in agony. His vision began to cloud, people stopped and asked if he was alright but he couldn't hear the above the pounding of his own heart. The vision came, he saw something terrible. He saw the earth cooling. The seas froze, animals died and glaciers covered everything. It dropped to temperatures much lower than anything could survive.
He screamed, both from the pain in his head and from the horror of what he saw. When the vision faded he saw a group of concerned civilians surrounding him. He soon found out that he was not the only one who received the vision. Within hours it was on the radio, broadcasting into every home, everywhere. Everyone was afraid, and everyone who received the vision wanted to stop what they saw.
That was when Nathan had an idea, he was going to call upon some people to help him. He couldn't go himself, so he sent letters to those that could.
To whom it may concern:
As you may know, there has been a prediction of the end of life on Earth. I am Nathan, I was one of the ones who received the prediction and I think that we can stop it. But I need your help. I have sent letter to those who I think can help. You are probably wondering how I knew you could help and the answer is simple. I am a psychic, I used my abilities to find you.
Now you may be wondering how you can help, and I assure you I have chosen each of you carefully. You will meet the others in the town square of Arborville. I am afraid that I cannot come with you as I will not be able to help you in the upcoming struggles but I can guide you from here.
Good luck
Sincerely, Nathan Green
As you may have read from the lore and the backstory this is a magic roleplay with a setting similar to that of the 1930s. Your character will probably know magic, but you can also have a character that doesn't. I will roleplay as Nathan who will guide the character but will be unable to actually intervene in what is happening in addition to my character below. If you have any questions, just ask.
Rules:
1. No godmodding, powerplaying or metagaming
2. Be nice when typing in OOC
3. Use (( and )) for typing in OOC, or any equivalent
4. What type of magic your character uses is up to you, but fortune telling and the like is off limits. I will be using them as plot devices
5. Please keep the roleplay PG, romance is fine but don't go overboard

Name: Peter Dalton
Age: 25
Appearance: Peter is a thin, wiry man. His skin is fair but not pale. His hair is light brown, short and straight with a sort of messy hairstyle. His face is mostly free from blemishes and is thin with a rounded chin and a thin mouth. He wears neutral colours, like grey and brown. Today he is wearing a long sleeve, white, collared shirt with a brown, cloth jacket over the top. The jacket has lighter brown patches on the elbows. He wears a pair of dark brown trousers with a pair of black shoes with similarly coloured socks. He wears a black waistcoat beneath his jacket and has a simple, analogue watch with a leather strap on his left wrist.
Personality: Peter is a serious man with a dry sense of humour. He is loyal to his friends and will try to help them if possible. He has a passion for the study of use of magic. He is quite level-headed, until he loses his temper. When he loses his temper he becomes defensive and stubborn, or at least more stubborn than usual. He can appear a little cold at times but he does genuinely care for other people and he does not want to see them get hurt. Underlying all of this is a cautious side to his personality, he prefers to stay out of fights if he can and will not go actively looking for trouble.
Magic: Ice
Equipment: notebook, pen, water and bread.
Biography:
Peter's early life was fairly normal. He went to school and got reasonably good grades he wasn't at the top of the class but he wasn't barely passing either. He had a few friends at school but was hardly the most popular kid. Life was just a picture of normality. That was until one day.
As Peter was walking through a park at the age of sixteen, he spotted a street performer. It was like any performer that one might see in the park except they were performing arcane magic. Making things levitate, summoning fire, lightning in the palm of their hand. It was incredible, Peter had never seen anything like it. He asked them how they had done such amazing feats and the simple answer was 'it was magic'. It was then that Peter knew that he wanted to learn to cast magic like they had. It was that event that sent him along the path to becoming a mage.
Peter studied spells, trying to learn magic by himself as he didn't know anyone who could use magic. He had to practise his spells outside as he didn't want to break anything. He tried spells, sometimes they worked and sometimes they blew up in his face. It took a long time, but eventually he could use magic without any disastrous consequences, which often came in the form of accidental explosions. He could finally focus magic to do simple tricks, not as good as the street performer but he could still summon the force of magic to do his will.
One day he was practising magic in the park, what better place to practice the arcane than in the fresh air? He had read some books on magic, enough to learn how to use magic but still many things about magic still bewildered him. He was summoning an orb of pure ice when he caught the eye of a stranger. A strange who happened to be a mage. A mage who happened to be one of the teachers at a well known and respected magic university. The mage took an interest in Peter's use of magic and didn't hesitate to tell him about an institution where magic was studied in detail. At this time Peter was eighteen and had already graduated from school. There and then he was told about a place where he could study, or even live, a life of magic. He told his parents and was allowed to go study there.
Peter spent several years there, he learnt how to use magic properly. He began a life to studying the arcane. He wasn't the best mage, but he still got to do what he loved. It took a long time but eventually he showed enough promise to begin working as a researcher at the university after his graduation. He studied magic, he tried to decipher the science behind the magic. He had some success, not anything major but he did publish a couple of research papers.
Peter first heard about the vision on the radio, it was scary. He felt on edge for a few days following that event. But just as life settled down a little he noticed a letter addressed to him. Ordinarily a letter would not be such a surprise but this letter was. It contained a message from someone named Nathan and an instruction to meet some people in a predetermined place. Peter was intrigued, his curiosity compelled him to go and try and help prevent the disaster he had heard on the radio like the letter said.

Name: Jackie Marlen
Age: 19.5
Appearance: Jackie is a small, short and thin girl. Her skin is the color of walnuts and her hair is messy, often oily, ruffled and the color of melted chocolate. Her eyes are wide and are hazel. She has small cheeks with dimples. She has a blanket of freckles on her nose but they are very faint. Her hair is often tied up in a red, ripped hair tie. When out, it barely goes over her shoulders. She likes to dress like her boy, and sometimes she pretends she is one. She is often mistaken for one. Her arms and legs are thin but her shoulders are broad. Her hands and feet are also small and her neck is rather short. Jackie often likes to also dress as a pirate, wearing a red, crumpled and dirty shirt and black shorts. She wears brown boots, and mis matching socks. If you didn't guess, red is her favorite color.
Personality: Jackie could be compared to a lot of animals. Wolves, foxes, dogs, crows etc. She has a fighting spirit and loves to attack people, even for the littlest things. She is short tempered and easily frustrated. She is a very big tomboy, and if she has the chance she would gladly said she was a male. But she doesn't... Most of the time. She doesn't hold grudges for long, but she doesn't trust people very well. She is loyal, but sometimes needs to be dragged along. She loves the outdoors and she absolutely hates posh people. Even people that live vaguely close to a castle she attempts to stay away from.
Magic: Jackie does not have any magic, but she can make a great meal out of few ingredients. She likes to call herself a "Magical Chef" but we all know she is just an average chef.
Equipment: She usually has a paperclip, a pen lid and a small roll of bandages in her pocket of her shorts. She only uses these items in emergencies, and she makes sure they dont fall out. Other than that its just her skills. She doesnt necessarily need them most of the time though.
Biography: Jackie was born with an older brother, who taught her many skills she has today. Though, he ran off to go join a group of street performers somewhere. Her mother was very supportive and helped her through the early years. Her father wasn't so nice, but she loved him all the same. Jackie's family was very poor. Lying, Jackie stated she had found a job in the market at age 14, helping sell bread at a bakery. Jackie started pick pocketed people. Stealing money and food and bringing it home as if she grained these things. Her parents died of old age, but Jackie was not phased. She hadn't a very good education and hadn't heard of such a thing. She assumed they were sleeping. Jackie decided she would run off to explore the world as a pirate, since her parents were asleep they would not know. Of course, since they were sleeping, they would never know. Things did not go according to plan so Jackie took shelter under her parent's roof. Later, she found two weird mutant people, so she took them outside and yelled at them to never come back. For money and food, Jackie continued pick pocketing, getting caught once or twice. She figured out how to hide herself properly and run unnoticed through the crowds on busy days.
Jackie was preparing herself to go watch her brother as a street performer.Leaving the house, she noticed a letter. She had already paid her bills this month! She couldn't read, so she occasionally asked travelers passing through to read letters for her. She tore open the letter, this didn't look like a bill. Knowing her brother had a somewhat decent education, she decoded to talk to him as soon as she could to ask him what the note was. He didn't hear about the vision at all, so he assumed it was just a trick, but Jackie was determined and decided she would help the world, if it meant sailing ships and fighting.

It is a nice app, you are accepted. If a couple more people join then we can start. If you wish to give your character some sort of magical affinity or power later on you can, just check if the power is allowed first.

I'd like to give this a bash. I tired to do this before, but my post was deleted while it was half way done. TAKE 2!
Name: Ethan Shadel & Cryeon ((I'll explain))
Age: 27 & unknown
Appearance: Ethan comes from upper west America ((or this world's equivalent)). He is of short stature with jet black hair which has a natural part to the right. His eyes are a deep blue and he is somewhat far sighted. He usually wears a brown traveling cloak with long sleeves and leather gloves, all meant for cold weather trips through the wilds. In addition, below his cloak he has an emerald necklace with a silver chain. The gem has specific pattern of cracks that seem to form some kind of rune. It doesn't seem to have any magical powers, it was just an heirloom from his parents. Now, who is Cryeon? Cryeon is a black footed ferret with a rather dark orange gold back and dark almost purple eyes. She occasionally has echos of wind or light around her before or after they actually happen. Unlike Ethan, she is somewhat far sighted, but like Ethan, has some jewelery. She has a silver band she wears on her leg with a similar emerald. This gem has the same cracks and rune as Ethan's
Personality: Mostly to be RP'd. However, in general, Ethan is somewhat rash and quick to judge. Cryeon tends to be much calmer and avoids conflict.
Magic: Ethan is very bad with magic and can hardly preform simple tricks even with prep time, and so prefers technology. The only real magical power he has is a link to Cryeon. Both seem to know what the other is thinking at all times.
Cryeon, on the other hand, is actually more skilled with magic. She is destabilized in time, giving her some chronological powers. She can manipulate recent events in certain ways. However, this control is mostly retroactive. She has very little control over the future, the extent of this being able to very occasionally predict events only a few seconds before they actually happen ((remove if that still counts as fortune telling)). Her power over the past involves repeating recent actions ((such as, if a hammer hits a wall, she can distort time to repeat that event so the wall would be hit by the hammer a few times and then break.)), jumping backwards a few seconds, shuffling around events, and other things like that. Using this power takes a toll on her mind, with any time frame longer than 20 or 30 seconds being especially taxing. Using lots of this magic will make her more and more unstable and unpredictable for a while.
Equipment: Ethan has 2 M1911 pistols ((thanks Wikipedia)) and a saber. Apart from that and the items described in appearance, he also carries a satchel that Cryeon often rides in. Finally, he has a flask of water, some dried fruit and some cooked rabbit.
Biography: Cryeon has been with Ethan's family for generations. The records become fairly vague after about 3 generations back. Rumors say that Cryeon took some kind of deal with one of Ethan's ancestors for her powers but had to protect the eldest child of the Shadel family in exchange. Twenty or so years ago, Ethan was seven during the war and when the family's homestead was raided by bandits exploiting the chaos of war. Cryeon fought alongside Ethan's parents to hold them off. Despite their efforts, they were pushed back into the house and Ethan was killed in the resulting firefight. In shock and rage, Cryeon went back a full five minutes and manipulated time to essentially shoot the raiders with their own bullets, using every ounce of power she had. She had never done anything on that scale before, and the backlash drove her insane, giving her hallucinations and causing her to leave the family for nearly three years.
She missed Ethan's 9th birthday, the age when the emerald amulet symbolizing the bond between the family and Cryeon would be passed down and Cryeon's oath of protection would also pass down to Ethan. She eventually returned in shame and they had a somewhat awkward and delayed passing down ceremony. She swore she would be better for Ethan, and they've had a special kind of affinity ever since. It was a sort of opposites attract kind of thing.
It was a bright Wednesday morning when Ethan got the letter and took it over to a table to open and read it, with Cryeon watching over his shoulder. On finishing it, they got into a brief mental argument. Ethan was hungry for adventure and had enough money saved up for passage and some supplies. But, Cryeon thought it was just some kind of trick. After arguing each of their points, Ethan won out. Cryeon had a lot of respect for psychics anyway, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad. After packing up and saying goodbye, they left for the road, but Cryeon was already asleep within 30 minutes.
Other: I know you said magical creatures are very rare, but hey, practically the whole point of making a character is to have something special.
And, let me explain a little more about what I mean by repeating recent events with Cryeon. Lets say Ethan fires a pistol shot. If Cryeon reacts fast enough, (IE: within about 10 seconds) she can look back in time to when the event happened and force it to exist temporarily in both the past and present at once. To onlookers, it would seem like Ethan fired a shot then a few seconds later another pistol shot would fire from thin air where Ethan was standing. If she's really quick and/or willing to risk her sanity, she can duplicate an action 3, 4, or even 5 times. However, this cannot duplicate objects. Any objects she brings in from the past vanish once her focus on them does. If they didn't, it would be massively OP.

This seems like a good app, but I have some concerns. Time related powers can get very OP very quickly. I will allow the repition of events (up to 3 times with some strain) but not the time reversal or manipulation. The forwarning ability is alright so long as it isn't a clear prediction and only a few moments in the future (long enough to dodge an incoming attack). But I will allow Cryeon to have an extra non-time magic related power, like fire breathing, healing or teleportation or something. I'm sorry if this is a bit harsh, but as I said time related powers can get very OP. Other than that it seems good.

Alright, I wasn't sure just how powerful to make my characters. All I had to go off of was "about as powerful as technology", but I guess I aimed too high. I want to keep Cryeon's focus on chronological powers and I really don't want to give her a way to attack directly. So, here comes the nerf bat! (although a little in my defense, Cryeon's magic has to be rather powerful because she has basically no physical abilities due to, you know, being a ferret.)
Revisions to her magic:
She was never formally trained in her type of magic, but has had a very long time to practice it. So, she isn't very good at handling the backlash. Her repeating events power still works mostly the same, but has another 2 limitations. The longer she has to look back to find the action, the more taxing it is. Also, the longer the event to copy is the more taxing it is. Her time travel power works the same, however she cannot actually control when she travels back in time or how long back she goes. This is more likely to happen when she is feeling very stressed. She cannot manipulate the order of multiple events any more. Instead, what she can do is manipulate specific object's time flow. So, for example, she can hold an object out of time until she wants it to come back or move it backwards in time. However, the strain on her mind increases exponentially with how long she holds the object and the mass of the object. Anything heavier than a tennis ball or so will fray her mind particularly quickly. And of course, strain still does the same kind of thing. She gets irritable, unpredictable and illogical. With very taxing magic, she might start to hallucinate and become paranoid. And, thanks to the link between Cryeon and Ethan, Cryeon's strain might have an effect on Ethan as well.
Is that a little better?
And of course, hindsight is always 20/20. I was kinda running out of things to describe, but forgot one of the most obvious things, Ethan's actual training. Ethan hasn't had any combat training, but has a particular knack for climbing, of all things. He has practiced shooting occasionally over the years until he has become a master decent shot. In a fight, he prefers speed to power or defense, and this transfers to all of his movements in general. He's pretty bad at swimming because he always tries to go at full speed rather than getting powerful strokes.
And that, children, is how not to Mary Sue your characters (imo). But seriously, if you want some tips, check out the Role player's Writer's Workshop thread.

Its really good.
Hey, even originally, Cryeon was far from perfect. I specifically made her so that in a 1 on 1 battle with just about anyone, she would lose. She cannot use her power to directly attack anyone. However, she actually could have a chance in a 2 on 2 battle.
Slight revision actually, the strain from controlling the time flow of objects comes instead from the amount of energy she has to transfer and how long she has to transfer it for. So, strain increases exponentially with mass, velocity, and spin. With the old system, catching a bullet would be very, very easy. However, with this system catching a bullet devastates Cryeon's mind, part of the reason why she went insane for 3 entire years.
The weather was calm and peaceful, as if it was unaware of the impending disaster that had been foretold. Life had tried to continue, many convincing themselves that the apocalyptic event would never come to pass. But in the back of everyone's minds they knew that something was coming. The stress seemed to fill the air at times.
The prediction had happened not so long ago, not long enough to have been removed from the minds of the populace. Not long enough to have been forgotten. It had been recent enough to warrant a feeling a worry that sometimes seemed to permeate the air itself. The prediction of the end of life as the people knew it, such a thing would weigh heavily on everyone's minds. Thankfully order has been kept, there had been reports of a few rash actions on the radio but nothing too bad.
Peter had just arrived at the town square, he was a bit early. The sun shone on the cobbled path, illuminating the whole area except for areas of dappled shade under weary-looking trees. Although the sun shone, the air was still crisp and cool from the previous night. Peter stood next to a fountain, the sounds of the water seemed to be trying to create a calming atmosphere though they were not successful. Pigeons grouped in flocks and walked around, searching for scraps.
In the middle of all this calm before the storm was Peter, here to meet the others that the mysterious Nathan wrote to. He just held onto the hope that the letter was not some cruel lie. He just hoped that Nathan told the truth, and that he could help. All he had to do now was wait. The waiting made each second take longer than the last, Peter wished to do something to help stop the prediction, but he couldn't. At least not yet.
(I literally just logged on to do some night scrolling e-e)
Jackie wanted to be there early. She wanted to go on a REAL adventure! She was so excited she had barely slept a wink. She tied her hair up sloppily and pulled on some boots. She dug through her pocket, checking all her odds and ends were there. She pulled out some lint and inspected it. She put it back in her pocket as she opened the door. The morning was odd. She rarely was awake at this hour.
"He said to meet at the town square, I hope I'm not too late!" She clung on to this thought. She ran through the marketplace. Pigeons rapidly flapped about as she thundered down the path. She frowned as the sun got in her face, stupid sun! She slowed her pace as she reached the town square. She couldn't see anyone. Maybe they left without her? She jumped to this conclusion and held back the tears. She wiped her eyes with her dirty arm and walked to the fountain, sitting on the edge and mumbling to herself.
The sudden departure of a flock of pigeons was Peter's first hint that someone else was here. And sure enough a woman suddenly ran onto the scene. Apparently she did not see Peter as she immediately went to the fountain. Perhaps she was the second member of the group that Nathan had written to. She could be someone who was going to be part of the group for the adventure or another victim of some cruel joke. Peter wasn't sure which it was yet, but he hoped that it was the former.
Peter took a step closer if she was indeed a member of the group then he should introduce himself. He cleared his throat to get her attention before speaking, "Excuse me? Did you happen to get a letter too?" he asked. This question would inform him as to whether or not this person's arrival was a coincidence or if she was part of the group. Next he should probably introduce himself, if just to be polite. "My name is Peter" he said.
Maybe this person knew more about Nathan and the letters, but it was quite possible that they were just as informed as he was. Peter also wondered how many people would be in this group, it would probably be more than two. There was so much mystery surrounding this, and the only way to uncover the truth was to wait. Time would tell what was waiting for them in the future.
Jackie looked up, interested in the letter, maybe it was a coincedence though, or not. But then again, how could she trust this fellow. "Why do you want to know?" She blurted out. "You arent getting any information from me, Peter! if that is your real name." She stood up. "I havent gotten any letter from Nr Nathan-" She looked shocked and scared, covering her mouth with both hands. She knew she couldnt trust him, maybe he was a spy, trying to steal her adventure or something. She sat back down. "You arent getting anything from me, spy!"
Peter took an involuntary step backward, he did not expect her to react as though he was interrogating this person. Rather than come to the conclusion that Peter had recieved a letter too, she instead accused him of espionage. She even accused him of using a fake name, but there was one thing that she said that gave him the answer to his question. Did she receive a letter too? The one thing that gave it away was she mentioned Nathan when Peter did not, he only mentioned the letter.
"I'm not a spy!" Peter said, a note of defensiveness in his voice, "I recieved a letter from Nathan telling me to come here!" If he recalled correctly, the letter said that there were others and it did say that the recipient of the letter would meet them here. "The letter said that they were others. So back to my question, did you recieve a letter two?"
Peter had chosen not to mention that he had gleaned the answer from what she said, thinking that it would more polite to just ask. She had seemed scared had covered her mouth. It could be that Peter had just startled her or she was very defensive about the letter, if she had one. Exactly why she was so defensive was unknown to Peter. Perhaps she did not want him to know if she had recieved a letter.
Lore:

Magic: (the type of magic your character uses)
Equipment: (what your character has)
Biography: (your character's history, at least two paragraphs)
Other: (anything else you want to add)
My Application:

I dont have too many at all...It is a nice app, you are accepted. If a couple more people join then we can start. If you wish to give your character some sort of magical affinity or power later on you can, just check if the power is allowed first.
Oh, thanks! It was just thrown together at the last minute, but I probably wont add any powers

I like to think Cryeon is the new Doctor for Doctor Who.

I dont have too many at all...Alright, I wasn't sure just how powerful to make my characters.
He has practiced shooting occasionally over the years until he has become a
masterdecent shot. In a fight, he prefers speed to power or defense, and this transfers to all of his movements in general. He's pretty bad at swimming because he always tries to go at full speed rather than getting powerful strokes. There's a difference between a hero and a champion. A champion overcomes threats, but a hero overcomes fears.

I dont have too many at all...Yes, but Nathan is more like an NPC than Peter. Peter will be my actual character while Nathan is there to help guide the story.
Okay, that makes sense. Just a bit confused, thats all.

I dont have too many at all...Hey, even originally, Cryeon was far from perfect.

I dont have too many at all...Peter took an involuntary step backward, he did not expect her to react as though he was interrogating this person.
