As long as you have a good grasp on the lore, a good time period (please not OoT, it's over done), and a decent story, you should be fine.

Arguments happen, they just do, you can't stop it, no matter how much power you have, even if it takes years to settle, when it does, everyone is stronger for it. Rivalries can be made into friendships if you let them.
Some ideas are meant to be made into reality, but most need to be burned at the stake.
Hating the things you love
There isn't much you can make completely new and original when you base it around a well established world with lots of bases covered, however, there are plenty of ways around it. Such as something happening at the same time as another game/event that happened in a different part of the world. Or something the lore talks about but is not in the games. (The Great War and Capless Link (which I theorise WiiU LoZ is going to be about)). Or something that happened In between games/lore.
if anyone wants to hear me explain the lore PM me.

Okay, I'm just gonna fire off a couple ideas at you guys.
1) Majora's Mask setting: you're in the world of Termina. You're going about your life until suddenly: the moon looks a bit closer to you then it normally does. Uncomfortably close. As the moon starts falling, you panic. You hear a mysterious song, and then: everything's back to normal. And the moon starts falling again. It feels familiar, but you can't pinpoint why. You hear the strange song. You're left with a sense of deja vu, and go about your next three days normally. You can't help but feel you're stuck in a loop, but if you think about it, you can't pinpoint why. Suddenly, the moon starts falling and you don't hear that same strange song. Someone summons the four forgotten giants, and you're allowed to progress on with your life. But your savior is nowhere to be found. What do you do? Do you look for the green-clad little boy who has suddenly disappeared? Or do you just move on with your life?
2) Twilight Princess setting 1: your would is being ravaged by the Twilight. The Zoras have seen their Queen executed in front of their very eyes. The Gorons cannot enter their mines because of the danger. The Hylians are scattered, lost, unknowing what to do. The dark seems unending. Horror stories have been spread of loved ones turning into ghosts as they're consumed by the Twilight.
3) Twilight Princess setting 2: the world has been released from twilight's grasp. Any friendships made from beyond the dark have been severed, all hope is lost of ever seeing your Twili or Hylian friends again, depending on what side of the Twilight you're on. You try to progress with your life. And you do. Until rumors start spreading of a way to open a channel to the Twili world again.
I guess I'll be the one to say it, the third plot doesnt make sense. As twili and hylians never interacted beyond the Twili invasion force. (With the exception of Midna, Zant, and the Three (Link, Zelda, & Ganon) and even if they did crossover, they wouldn't be able to interact with each other (hylians would appear as souls, twili would appear as shadows)

Allow me to offer a different storyline:
4.) The land of Termina is a peaceful place, long since saved by a boy in green. However, A large black semi-translucent column had appeared over the stone tower. A guard explored, and found that a crimson sword was buried into the side, and in the center of the column, a faint image of a person can be seen.
I have left it intentionally vague so it may be revealed in roleplay. If you would like to go with this, Ninty, I will PM you the entire storyline as well as where it should go and end, so that you may run it, and still keep the drama and suspense for the players.

meh....that kind of roleplay doesn't give much space to the exploration of Hyrule, we may explore and discover what that column does but it doesn't seem very intruiging....

one question, will it be a completely new and original story or will it circle around already existing zelda games?
