For almost 500 years, Earth stood still, trapped in an endless cycle of technological stagnation. Since 2160, man had given up its dreams to travel the stars, had almost given up hope in the fundamentals of industrialization. Much of the population had already turned back to the old days, to agriculture, to the days where technology was not integrated into the lives of the common day civilian. Then, the skies began to change. It was first noticeable at night. No longer was the sky pitch black, but a dull, pulsating crimson. Soon however, even the day skies had morphed from bright blue to a dull, gorelike red. Only a select few had the resources to analyze the change, and so miniscule were they in numbers it took them nearly a year to discover the problem. The sun was evolving. It had been thought it would take millions of years for the sun to make its change to a red dwarf, but alas, those estimates were wrong. Knowing time was short, what was left of the scientific community continued their research into interstellar travels. With their new motivation, and growing numbers from the throngs of terrified masses, support grew to an all time high, and with it came a success. The Tear Generator. With a massive burst of energy, this machine could tear a hole in the very foundation of Einsteinian space, allowing ships to simply enter a tear and reappear out of another. With the dawn of the Tear Generator, came the dawn of hope for mankind. The construction of great ships, Arks, they were called, began. Only one was finished. With the expansion of the sun imminent, this one Ark was filled with the worlds greatest intellectual, political, and artistic minds, along with a select few of the normal workforce. A tear was generated, and the Ark departed earth.
Almost 1000 years after the Ark, humanity flourishes, oblivious of their dark origins. However, their discoveries in the fields of physics, and their triumph with the Tear Generator, had not gone unbeknownst to other starfaring races. Humanity sits in its cradle of stars, surrounded by hundreds of other interstellar empires, all competing for control of the Galaxy.
What will you choose?
Thanks for reading the post
Here's an outline of the starter factions, more will be added later.
The Sol Technocracy - The largest and most prosperous of all the human empires, the Sol Technocracy is led by the empires foremost scientists, many descendants of those who migrated on the Ark so long ago.
The Blessed - Fanatical worshippers of the Ark, this faction exists only for the search, to find the wreck of the Ark, and to restore it to its former glory. They believe once they have accomplished their goal, they will ascend to a higher state. A theocracy led by the Prophet, one of the original migrantss on the Ark, frozen in a cryotube and thawed only a few years before.
The Maw - An ancient interstellar empire outlasting that of the humans by almost 8000 years. The Maw controls an entire arm of the galaxy, but is only now making incursions into the Orion Complex.
The Creed - A Federation of 3 alien species tied together by a single creed. "Research is life". One of the most scientifically innovative species in the galaxy, they use an alternate form of interstellar travel called "Singularity Propulsion". Their ships generate miniature black holes infinitely close to the noses, pulling them forward at massive velocities, because of the massively powerful pull of a black hole.
The Fringe Coalition - Not even a proper government, but a hyperanarchy whose borders are protected from incursions by the more "civilized states" by a ragtag fleet of pirates, mercenaries, bounty hunters, and deserters. The entire principle is there are no laws, and people intend to keep it that way.
I'm excited for this roleplay.

Wears a dark blue suit with a small, golden galaxy shaped insignia clipped onto the chest. He has close shorn hair, perpetually narrow blue-grey eyes, and an intimidating air about him. One of his arms is made of a blue-ish green alloy up to the elbow. Around 6 foot 2 inches
Profession: Commander of the patrol ship: Manifest Destiny tasked with guarding the merchant lanes bordering the Fringe
Vessel: Manifest Destiny A 180 foot, 3 deck starship, carrying 38 crew and 14 Marines.
Possessions: A single, long barreled laser pistol. Out of date and worn, but extensively modified.
Biography: Born on the Sol Technocracy border world of Restlias, Anton was in a state of perpetual danger. While in a so called "Civlized Zone", Restlias was the target of numerous attacks from anarchist groups across the border, and pleas for help generally went unnoticed by the nearby patrol ships. After his home city of Charon was attacked by a trio of mercenary ships and hundreds of citizens were killed, Anton joined the TDF, or Technocracy Defense Force, in the hopes of making a difference. Along with millions of other young men, Anton joined the every growing ranks of the navy, and was placed aboard the freighter Minotaur a hopelessly outdated tanker that carried one of the most valuable minerals in the known galaxy: Trialhydrazine, or as the masses named it, Focus, the liquid that focused the tear generator's energy. After saving the ship from several pirate attacks, and a blunder into the Fringe worlds, Anton was promoted to Lieutenant and put under the command of Captain Leehauler on the Manifest Destiny, at the age of 28. For 3 years, he patrolled the borders, trying to protect those planets whose cries for help went unnoticed. During a disastrous raid on an anarchist settlement, Leehauler was killed, and Anton was pushed into command. Making an organized retreat, Scheller managed to lure the anarchists out, allowing them to be caught by nearby patrol ships and ending their threat to the nearby shipping lanes. For his successes, he was awarded the rank of Commander and given command of the Manifest Destiny , where his story now continues.

Just wanted to inform you, the Sun can't become a Red Dwarf, it has too much mass. If anything, you could say the Sun has pulled Nemesis (a hypothetical Red Dwarf orbiting our system causing all the mass extinctions) closer to us, thus causing the red sky (and destroying several planets.
Anyways, I'll be moving this story to a new thread soon. This was more of a teaser than anything else. The new thread has some cool little banners for each nation along with concept art of ships, a lore section, complex backgrounds for each nation, and an explanation of all starter materials allowed. I might run on a point system so no one player can move ahead with a massively powerful ship.

My bad, that wasn't very clear.
