I don't really use my desktop for much, I just run everything from the start menu, quick launch, or dock. And the dock auto-hides, so I don't need to go the desktop to use it. Also, I have a bit of a problem with redundancy. I have a lot of the same shortcuts in all of the above, plus the steam game list. But overall, I try to keep things as clutter-free as possible.
I really like people that have the discipline to maintain clean (or empty) desktops -- it's like showing 20th century computing who's the boss.
Then you really like me, my desktop is 100% empty.
Clean desktops used to be an art form, until you could just hide your icons.
