For something fun: In Bruges. Irish hit men lay low in Belgium, comedy ensues. Or maybe: Bon cop, Bad cop. A French-Canadian buddy cop comedy.
For something more serious: Inherit the wind. An old B&W courtroom drama with some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a movie.
I can't really think of a bad movie.
I actually found Inherit the Wind pretty ham-handed in its approach to the subject matter. If we're going with B&W courtroom dramas, though, I've gotta give a shout to 12 Angry Men.
For the best, I like LotR (of course nearly everyone on this thread mentioned it). Star Wars Episode V is another favorite of mine, despite people's attention being taken by Episode III. Other honorable mentions include X-Men (and maybe First Class), The Matrix, and most of the recent Marvel movies (particularly The Avengers; watched Iron Man 3 last Saturday and can't wait for Thor: The Dark World!).
For the worst, I can't think of anything because I'm trying to avoid them.
I'll list some of my favourites. I've forgotten most of the movies I hate...
Willow
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
The Untouchables
Spirited Away
Falling Down
Me, Myself & Irene
Fargo
Munich
Shaun of the Dead
The Goonies
The Last King of Scotland
The Host
The Thing
The Dark Crystal
Rio Bravo
Spartan
Bolded: well, I mean, it wasn't that bad, there are worse. I'm not really contending that it isn't your least favorite, just wanted to say that it was indeed a cliche junk film, worst film this year (with a sizeable budget), and that's as far as I can agree. The effects were great, but that's pretty easy to do when you throw enough cash at the problem. Story cannot be helped in the same way. With the graphics, in 10 years time, they will be seen as cheesy as blue screen was 10 years ago. If you have phenomenal story, the illusion of reality is always secondary (unless it totally breaks immersion, such as fishing-line spaceships [MST3K exempted, of course].)
So my plea, to any hollywood exec minecraft players - for the love of Dude stop watering down content and story so you can bring the biggest and baddest computer graphics on the scene. No one remembers how awesome CG was in a film unless it was groundbreaking in a new way (Jurassic Park, Avatar) or the story was also phenomenally entertaining (Toy Story).
I'm not all that much into movies, i can only remember the more famous ones: Pulp Fiction, The Green Mile, Alien, The Thing, Leon/The Professional, Nikita (or La Femme Nikita in the US i think), The American, Lucky Number Slevin, Ring, Ray, The Silence of The Lambs, Planet of The Apes, Men in Black, Bad Boys, Million Dollar Baby, Dirty Harry...that's about it
The Thing, Pulp Fiction and The American are my preferred
I don´t watch a lot of movies, so I don´t have any real decisions on favorite movies. I do hate movies based on books, though. Most throw half the original plot away and it lands on them when they do the second book/movie.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but one of the worst movies I've seen is Drive. It received near-universal critical acclaim, and almost everyone I've talked to seemed to enjoy this movie, but I thought it was incredibly boring, plodding, and just...well, dull. That's the best way I can describe it; I seriously don't understand the appeal of it. However, the absolute worst movies I've ever seen are Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie, hands down. They were so astoundingly dreadful, I don't even know where to begin.
Also an unpopular opinion, but I thought Pacific Rim was highly overrated, though it's definitely not the worst by any means.
Worst: Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Silly plot, horrible pacing, the cover of "She's Leaving Home" was gut-wrenchingly horrible, nothing happens for a good chunk of the movie, no dialog, instead, it relies on covers of famous Beatles songs to drive the plot, which doesn't work because Sgt. Peppers is not a Rock Opera, and songs often don't fit in with the context at hand.)

If a tree falls in a forest when there's nobody there, does it make a sound?
Best: All the Harry Potter movies.
Ice age movies are pretty good, too.
Worst: Alpha and Omega. That movie was utter garbage. Then there's "Flushed away" (I think that's what it is called.) That movie was terrible. There's also another one about some mouse, but I can't remember what it's called...

This is NOT including animated films otherwise my list would go on and on and on...
For the worst, I can't think of anything because I'm trying to avoid them.
...Why am I not so creative here?
Worst:
My house is made of steel, with paper for doors.

My absolute least favorite? Elysium.

it to anyone who likes realistic sci-fi.
You were wrong.
The Thing, Pulp Fiction and The American are my preferred
