I think the visual novels that you are focusing on are the ones that lead towards being... well... pornographic. I'm not really into that kind of thing but I do like the Fate series (Mostly the games that were not a visual novel) and I did watch the Phantom series... I don't know, my major hang-up with them is that they tend to end up focusing on the goal of being NSFW sometimes and they forget that they are supposed to be a story. But I'm not sure, still, I'm happy for you that you can find something you enjoy but I just hope you don't attempt to push it on others. If you don't push your opinion on others I won't push mine, agreed?

Not at all. It's simply the case that I'm indifferent towards the presence or absence of sexual content, and roughly 60% or so of all visual novels happen to have it.
I think I mentioned Umineko no Naku Koro ni. Pretty sure I mentioned Clannad, also pretty sure that Katawa Shoujo wasn't pornographic until the official release(There was a pretty awesome demo of it before the official release). Also: Planetarian and Chaos; Head are totally clean. Most doujin visual novels such as '40 days and 40 nights of rain'(which I adore) don't have sexual content simply because...the story is too short for it to feel justified.
Im really interested in Planeterian, and basically any VN its fun to play and is a greate alternative to me watching an anime, it keeps u active cause you have to do this and that to go through a storyline.
Any chance for a link to translated VNs by Key? Im fan of them, especially one VN "Clannad"
Just non pornographic ones, i feel using it as a sales point just ruins VN and anime even.
Any good ones I can play for free? Iloved 999 and the Phoenix Wright series to death, and I'm looking for something different.

"I often think about that old metaphor, the one that says we are all islands on a wide sea. Especially these days, now that things are more difficult than before and the world appears to be harsher than we once imagined it to be. We are all like islands, the philosopher said. Perhaps it's true. Yet I cannot help but remember an older saying, scratched on a cave wall somewhere by a long-forgotten prophet: in the end, the sea will claim everything."

If you don't mind a little adult only content(or even if you do, as there is an option to disable it) I would recommend Katawa Shoujo(google it, should be easy to find). Completely free, good storyline, pretty different and unique IMO. More geared towards westerners than most VNs, as it was made by English-speakers.

I forgot to ask, but would you prefer something that was more fantasy or action-based instead of a romance drama? Sometimes I forget how much variation there is within visual novels.

I'm really open to anything. I've got very odd taste in entertainment.

There are a few visual novels that I liked but they never got attention. Stuff like "Time Hollow" and "Lux-Pain" or maybe even small things that aren't really visual novels but they have that kind of feeling like "Record of Agarest War"... anyway that visual novel Katawa Shoujo is number four in the PC section of Gamefaqs... hope that brightens your day mystere9.

Those are absolutely Visual Novels!
I feel like more and more visual novel-style games are being brought to America for the DS, and I like it. It gives writers more freedom to make great stories without stressing out about traditional gameplay problems.
I like that Katawa Shoujo is high on Gamefaqs, I know that there are a lot of guys and gals on the 'Anime/Manga - Other Titles' board who have been looking forward to it.
Okay, that was awesome. Any other suggestions for free visual novels?

Unfortunately, there are not many that are officially free. Although I must say that a lot of the good ones fall into a questionable grey area when it comes to downloading them, due to being unable to realistically purchase them outside of Japan. If you're cool with that, I'd recommend trying out Sekien no Inganock. If not, you might try 40 days and 40 nights of rain(Which is really short. An unfortunate standard for free visual novels.) Again, you can always PM me if you ever need more specific help.

this is a thread i can get behind and yea whilst katawa shoujo was AMAZING it was a let down to hear the chaos over katawa 2 (incase you don't know it was never supposed to be a thing then was almost a thing then they hated where the story was going so they scrapped it because the plot was causing infighting between developers) but im glad they hinted they might skip two and just make 3 which isn't related to the first in the way 2 would have been which is what caused most of the issue but thats off topic just thought mystere9 would like that

The only visual novel I ever played/read was Analogue: A Hate Story and its sequel Hate Plus. I got partly through its predecessor (Digital: A Love Story). I wouldn't know any others to get into though, the ones my friends play seem somewhat pervy and I'm not into that stuff.
I have never played a visual novel in my life. Are there any good free adventure visual novels out there?

Some of them may seem pervy at first glance due to the very inclusion of erotic content. However, there are a great many amazing stories out there if you're willing to indulge the writers in a tiny bit of eroticism. Katawa Shoujo being one of the best ones, and some of my favorites being Sharin no Kuni and Sekien no Inganock. A couple of my favorite ero-free games are Ever17 and Stein's Gate. There are also a good number of very popular ones I haven't had the time to play, like Muv-Luv alternative, Umineko no Naku Koro ni(ero-free) and 999(also ero-free).

999 is a newer game, so I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. It is by the same writer as Ever17 though, which I'm sure I've mentioned.
