I just got MC pc and a pc for my daughter for Xmas and just now got it hooked up but when I tried to play the game it gave an error message saying our video card was the issue but after following the troubleshooting steps they gave me, it said there weren't any problems with the driver so I'm confused. I bought the pc on Craig's list and it's specs are:
Hp compaq dx2400
Intel Pentium dual core e5300 @ 2.60ghz
3072 mb RAM
And according to the specs listed on my pc, the video cards is:
Intel G33/G31 express chipset family
Chip type gma 3100
Approx total memory 256mb
Current display mode 1440x900(32 bit)(60hz)
Direct X features:
Direct draw acceleration, direct 3d acceleration and AGP texture acceleration are all enabled(whatever this means)
I don't know squat about graphics cards and I can only spend like $50-60 so if anyone can help me figure out a cheap fix for this issue. My daughter is only 9 so I only need the most basic model for minor playing. I don't know what specs you will need to offer a solution so I just posted everything I could find in my computer control panel
Here are the 10 best graphics card I could find in your price range on newegg.com any of these would be vastly better then the Intel Integrated graphics chip.
I Googled your PC and found a pic of it's internals. The graphics card goes in the long black slot between the wire cable and silver heat sink.
And here is a basic installation tutorial
I hope this will help you.

Hey thanks man, I really appreciate this, it help a lot. One thing I need to know before I buy is what is more important when choosing a a graphics card, the amount of cuda cores, the core clock mhz, or the effective memory clock mhz?

For your PC I would say the either the amount of cuda cores or core clock. The cuda cores and core clock balance each other out. A GPU with less cuda cores but a higher clock speed could perform the same as a GPU with a higher core clock and fewer cuda cores. The memory clock speed would most benefit Minecraft if you are running High resolution texture pack or a higher resolution monitor. Minecraft with the default texture pack at 1440x900 does not need a lot of memory.

I'm just gonna put this out there, just for like an estimate of what FPS to expect. I have a GT 510, which is a lower end GPU then what ShawnPhillips suggested up there and I run stable at 60 FPS with almost maxed out with Optifine. So if you can't get optifine I could see any of the GPUs above running almost flawlessly at mid settings for the graphics on vanilla Minecraft.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help. I'm glad I wasn't bombarded by keyboard cowboys telling me what a nube I am and how I "need" some top of the line card cuz everything else is junk, lol. I see so much bickering on so many forums of all kinds that this was welcoming start to a forum that I have a feeling I'll be visiting quite a bit via my daughter, lol
Well I found best buy's ebay store and got a PNY geforce 610 for $43 after tax. It is a 1gb with 48 cuda cores and it says that it has openGL 4.2 support which was apparently the problem with the current card according to the error message Minecraft gave me when it wouldn't open. So I really hope this thing is sufficient cuz I don't have the money or know how at the moment to upgrade the ram, cup, power supply, etc. This one says it needs a 300w minimum power supply which one youtuber said most pc's should have. So wish me luck I guess, lol
It should be plenty good enough for MC. and even better with Optifine installed. 3 GB RAM is enough if you're not trying to do too many things at once, I have 4 gbs and my PC has never reached all 4. It reached 3.7 once but I was pushing it. The CPU, I don't think will really bottle neck a 610(?) As for the PSU, most pre builts come with low end PSUs, but I don't think any come with a PSU that couldn't handle a 610 unless it's like a compact pc. Lemme just tell you, don't try to put a GPU that says it requires a 400 Watt PSU when the one in your PC is 220 watt(compact pc) it can mess some things up. I know this from personal experience. But your will be fine.

Graphics card power requirements don't actually mean anything. The 300w power supply suggestion for the GT610 doesn't mean that you need a 300w power supply. The GT610 only uses 29w.
OP's processor only has a TDP of 65w, so you should be fine. This is assuming that your power supply actually provides the full 220w though.

I knew it wasn't exact, just like required RAM and all, but really a 270w difference?

Nvidia's site says that the card consumes 30w.

If the other components used less power than the remaining 30w and the 60w actually supplies a stable, constant 60w, yes.
