I've never really owned a decent set of headphones, and I would much rather prefer open-back for the significantly better sound stage. I was looking between the Audio Technica ATH-AD900Xs, Sennheiser HD 558s, AKG K612 Pros, and Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros (preferably 32 Ω so I don't have to fork money in for an amp). Now, if I go with DT 990 (250Ω) or the K612s, then I'll have to go with more money for an amp like a Fiio E10.
I'll be using the headphones for electronic music production and listening. I'll maybe watch a movie with them every now and again.
I'd definately prefer for there to be a bit of a boost in the bass, which is something that the ATH-AD900Xs and HD 558s lack a little bit (at least deep bass). I don't want a massive boost so that it drowns out everything.
I already know if anyone responds, someone is going to answer with "why don't you get Audio Technica ATH-M50s," and to that I would say that they are good headphones, but they're not open-back, which is something I'd definitely prefer.
I own the Sennheiser HD 598 open back headphones. I enjoy them quite a bit. They are about $150. You should check them out.
Those were also something I was thinking about, but the frequency response isn't that much different from the HD 558s and I think the colour scheme is ugly as hell. Unless you can find a black or dark model, those are a no.
Whack some velour pads on them for under $20 and you have got yourself a $160 for like, $50
They're good, but they don't have a deep bass extension like I would prefer. If you select the headphone type (Superluxx HD 668Bs), it shows a dive at around 90 Hz.
ATH-AD800/900X. Fits your price range, very comfortable, one of the best soundstages for the price, and a fairly flat response. If you really want more bass, you can always EQ. Also don't need an amp to drive than, so they'll work with mobile devices without issue.

Okay, I'll look into it.
