the power bill wouldnt go very high, like, $.5 at most, if at all, also, if you lagged that badly on a 5mb/s up, then you did something very very wrong, as i can host 50 people on my 5mb/s upload with 0% lag
Fifty cents a month? What fantasy world are you in?
In my state, a 24/7 server running at 300 watts constantly would cost $21.60 a month for just power, not including DDOS protection or business internet charges.
I've had it happen to me several times when it comes to RAM, but never anything else when used within several years time. I don't mind replacing hardware every now and then. Also, I've never seen hosting a Minecraft server being against an ISP's ToS, I mean, I've done it a number of times for small 5 person servers on this computer and its predecessor.
yes, but for how long at a time
@Tezliov you must have done something VERY, VERY wrong if you lagged that badly, ive hosted 50 people on my 5mb/s upload speed with 0% lag
back in 1.2.5 my duelcore AMD E-something apuin an acer laptopcould host 4-7 people with some lagg. it wasn't the best, but it worked. .... then why do you feel better having it at home so you can physically interact with it....?
@OP did some research, Time Warner cable does NOT, allow hosting home server's of any type, so you either have to upgrade your plan to a business plan, or rent a server
Thanks Logoster, I'll have to look into options in that case. Aceattwister, I feel better because I LIKE having physical access to my computers. I don't care if I have to replace parts occasionally, it doesn't bother me since I won't be replacing the whole computer.
Forgot to mention it was bukkit with a fair amount of plugins. Still, the extra charges for OP to homehost are much more then the rent of a server.
who the heck is your host then, there obviously not giving you the speeds you should be getting, or, you have settings really messed up, as i had some of the most intensive plugins you can get on bukkit

Thing is it isn't your computer when you rent, if you want to add a mod or downgrade the server, you can just control it at any time, just using a program, hell, if i wanted to i could be half way across the world and turn my main computer on, and see if my steam games are updating.
Nott to mention that a server is just a way to spend money, you will probably never get any kind of profit from it.

Charter. They're the only option here besides CenturyLink.

My state is actually fairly cheap, 10 cents per KWH. (Average is around 13 IIRC)

And I'm not really expecting to make a profit from it either. I just think I'd enjoy building and hosting my own server. I was going to make a low price gaming computer in the future anyway, and this could be that computer with an upgrade or two if I stop hosting soon or even in the distant future. Anyway, this is the last post I'm allowed today, so I'll respond more tomorrow.
so your running a 1000W system 24/7 and constantly playing somthing?
no? didn't think so.

actually, yes, its constantly running, except when everyone is asleep

Why are you so set on renting?
Time Warner's business internet starts at $79.99 a month. Your current plan is $54.99 a month. That's $25 extra, and if you add it to the power it's $46.60 extra a month, and you're still at risk of DDOS attacks, etc.
You can rent a pretty large server with $46.60. Larger then what you would host with any builds in this thread, and also you have DDOS protection.
actually, yes, its constantly running, except when everyone is asleep
What's the price per KWH in your state?
I call bullcrap. If it's on 12 hours a day, and your KWH is ridiculously low, (Let's say 5 cents per KWH) it still comes to $18.00 a month.

Yours is more then mine... 13-35 cents per KWH.
Yeah, you're definitely lying about only a 50 cent a month increase. For that it's have to run at ~50 watts for 12 hours a day, not 1000 watts.

unless they replaced a old un-efficant 500W theater system (or something similar, like a fridge)

I prefer renting, the support is second to none (not that you need it often) and for what you pay is a great deal. For the price of a PC you could rent a remote server for 5 years! And best of all its sat in a backed up datacentre so much higher uptime that a home server. Not to mention some ISP policies not liking that sort of thing. Its only my opinion, I can understand why you want to create your own though... It gives a good feeling of satisfaction to make something with your own hands.
I know that renting is the much cheaper and easier alternative, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy having a server nearly as much as I would if I owned the machine that ran it. I still have to look into this completely. I have to make sure everything will work out.As for power usage, I could care less about it going up a little. This computer is on nearly 24/7 and it has higher power requirements anyway.

That's not the point. The point is the power bill will cost MORE then a server will cost to rent. You also have to buy the hardware then, repair it if something goes wrong, get DDOS protection, and pay for business internet.

Which is why I said I have to look into all of this some more before I go for it. I may or may not end up renting.

You could probably even get a Celeron. But won't go that low.
You could get another stick of RAM if necessary.
Also others have said this before, but renting is cheaper.
