Exactly, as Quanni said (thank you Quanni for reading the OP), I need a laptop for school. It doesn't have to do Crysis 3 on max settings, that's what I have me desktop for.
Anyway, I can't seem to find anything with decent battery life and a dedicated GPU. I can only find either or.
I'm hoping that Haswell will pack better integrated graphics, that seems like it'd work.

my gf's computer, she gets about 4 hrs when not gaming (taking notes in class/on the internet) and about 1-2 when light gaming (minecraft or tf2). It runs well and has a nice cpu/gpu combo in a laptop. (also sits right at your budget).
backlit keys, full numpad, decent battery life. Only downside is it comes with win8 pre-installed

Now, inb4 ideapad Y series: they have a really low-res screen, and pretty poor battery life. Is there an option to upgrade that screen, I might just be able to get around the battery life, or get an extended battery.
So yeah, is there a laptop under $1000 that fits those requirements? Preferably from Lenovo, Asus, or MSi.
you'd be lucky to get good battery life with a laptop for gaming. My friend has a samsung series 7 gamer, and his computer lags whenever it's not in the powersource. Many gaming laptops used like that suck up power incredibly even when plugged in.

Not looking for an extreme gaming laptop, something with a 640 would do fine.
on ebay for $700. Not sure if safe, but still, if I can get it for that... it'd be a steal http://www.ebay.ca/i...1#ht_1192wt_906
EDIT: Ebay link posted is a model with a weaker GPU, but still fine for my needs. Not buying now, just looking around.
I don't think we can recommend anything right now, come back to the forum when you have the money for a new laptop.
The prices for laptops can change a lot, and new technology is always being released every single day. Next year will be another huge year with the new graphics cards such as the 700 series from Nvidia, and 8000 series from AMD, plus intels new haswell architecture.
Those options may be a lot more better than the ones we currently have.

I think an A10 laptop would be better than a GT630M right?
Unless Canada doesn't have many laptops with AMD integrated graphics

Thanks for that recommendation. Looking around for Samsung notebooks now, seems like they have great battery life and great specs for the money.
Looking at this one in particular http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/id/10235322.aspx
