Tasmania. I feel your pain.. I live in Tas & even though I get ADSL, it's borderline worse than 3G most of the time.
This is on a particularly bad day. (Today)
You sure you can't get ADSL where you live? I had a friend that was told she couldn't get it, and after 5 months of pestering Telstra they actually gave here ADSL2+.. & it runs at 6Mb/s. Goes to show sometimes Telstra don't do things because it 'takes too much effort'. All they had to do was switch her line onto an empty slot in the exchange. It'd been empty for years supposedly..
i will have a look but i have already checked with a few different providers and it seems the type of connection that i need just isn't available in my area however there was one i found but the problem with that was it is to expensive to rent the phone line and i suspect it will be the same fore any others i find.
It's not a problem of remoteness of the state, it's a problem of population density in areas like where the OP lives (quite far from main cities), we get the same internet connections in tasmania that you do on mainland australia, in fact we are at a better position for getting NBN currently.
Wouldn't help, his nearest exchange is around 7-9km cable length.

on a good day i am lucky to get half that with my current plan.
i think i can get telstra but they are just to expensive fore me
Where exactly are you? That is too slow, below telstra's minimum allowable speed for ADSL1, you should probably be speaking with them about it
Leith, Tas. I would love to talk to Telstra about it, but as my parents are the owners of the account & they don't care about it at all. My dad runs a business from home.. I have no idea how in the world he manages to put up with it

Speeds that slow really shouldn't happen, you are likely quite a long way from the telephone exchange but you should at least get 1.5/256. (telstra's minimum allowed speed for an adsl connection is like 1.2mbps)
Perform an isolation test and see if the speeds improve.
isolation test is when you remove all devices off the phone line like telephones, faxes, eftpos etc and plug your modem directly into the phone socket, also test a 2nd socket, reboot modem each time. if speeds improve then it is an issue with your line filters (do you have one on each phone or only the modem?) if the issue is still there then try to get telstra involved
just so i'm clear is latency referring to ping and is ping the time it takes for information to get from point A to point B ?
Indeed. Satellite has a average latency/ping of 1 second to 2 seconds if average. Which is what that image showed, the average round trip can be 500ms, but that's just a ping. With processor, data flow, net load, 1 second, or 1000ms~ is about common for Satellite internet.

Ok, thanks. I'll go try an isolation test now & see if that helps. There is only one phone on the line & it has a filter installed. Our house has 2 lines installed, one for the office phone/internet & another for the home phone.
if it makes any difference i was planing to go with one of thees plans http://www.ipstar.com.au/nbn/plan_nbn.html is the NBN any different from other satellite providers or are they all the same?
Brandon3055, are you on a Telstra 3G network? If not, it might be a good idea to test the internet where you live on the Telstra network. It's significantly better than Optus or Vodaphone.
Is that in isolation? how often do you get those "dsl signal not detected" errors? If the speed improvement is while the modem is isolated then that indicates the filter being the issue
yes i am already with telstra but it is not just the service it is also the price (as i mentioned earlier) the biggest plan available is 15GB for $109 that's just to expensive

Not in isolation. I restarted the modem & tested with the filter + phone, which resulted in that test. It's pretty much the same without the filter and in isolation. Seems to me like it gets progressively worse the longer it is turned on. The DSL disconnects up to 3 times a day, sometimes for up to 10 mins at a time. Nothing I have noticed can be linked to it. (Phonecalls, downloads etc). I've also notices downloads dropping & then picking back up with a gap of around 10 seconds quite frequently.. it gets quite annoying.

Well, i'm not sure you have many other options then. Might be worth discovering whether there's 4G reception where you live, although I doubt that there is.
I ask because my current (mobile) internet plan is horribly slow and expensive and there doesn't seem to be another option besides satellite.

I understand you live in Tasmania and that is somewhat "remote".
Try this website, it may help you see what is available around your area.
