I've been having unusually high ping since last night. (300-400 on pingtest.net) I don't know what's causing it. No one in my house is downloading anything, I checked my security and no laptops other then our families' are connected, and the ping is still really high. It gets fixed by resetting the router... for ten seconds. Then it goes back to 300-400 ping. Our download/upload speeds are still normal - 20/.5.
A pingtest is done to the closest local server, generally, unless you pick something else.
Ping will always get larger over a longer distance. That's how things work.
Call your ISP. If this persists over a long time, even with customer support, ask for a refund.
for net surfing yes, for ANY sort of game, hell no.
Okay i did try to clarify this in a PM with jppk as to not drag this off topic, but seeing as everyone is jumping on it anyway, ill relay the post.
Aussies play on Aussie servers for games.
where /everyone/ there has similar ping.
And unless you are seriously competitive, playing competitively just for fun is more than livable at 300ms. Trust me. You learn to adjust for the delay. I have been doing it for many years.

Your friendly neighborhood dragon. Don't be scared, I won't bite!

Trippledot has a fantasitic point--- if everyone has similar pings, then it doesn't matter what the ping is generally, since everyone is at the same level.
While 300 ms is longer than most pings, it is simply a lot better than 400 or 500 pings.
But call your ISP...it is unusually high (especially if you just noticied it went up)

I always wanted to argue with a brick wall, I suppose the internet is the second best option.

anything over 60 ping is noticeable, undesirable but playable. anything over 90-100 is unplayable. How do I know? Well over a decade of gaming, most of which competitively. I stopped competitive gaming a long time ago, doesn't change my feeling towards latency. I do not know a single gamer who bothers to play over 100 ping, once its in triple digits, don't bother.
That is because you live (presumably) in America.
If you lived over here you would know heaps that play with over 100ping.
i live in australiaThe only people i see with that high of a ping people who:
* have bad or cheap internet, and they have no choice. They always get ping in triple digits and they would rather play then not play
* an 8 year old noob kid who has no idea what the hell he is doing, and notices no difference between 5 and 500 ping, 15 and 90 fps.
Help? ISP is time warner cable.
Depending on their customer service, it is the best thing you can do.
300ping isn't that bad either really, its more than livable.
Its the holidays and i can only assume the lines are very busy at the moment, so a quick moment of slow internet can be expected.

It could be many things, from solar flares to squirrels gnawing on your line to your router/modem needing a reboot.
For some reason, 300 ping on speedtest translates to...in minecraft.

I live in Australia, i am conditioned to work with 300ms ping.
Its livable. Not optimal yes, but livable.
