At the moment, I have an Athlon dual-core CPU, which is fine for most things but is really starting to struggle with newer games. Since I don't fancy the idea of spending twice as much to replace the CPU and the motherboard, I have to pick one that uses the AM3 socket. At the moment, I'm looking at an Athlon x4 ($90 on Newegg) and a Phenom x4 ($100 on Newegg). Both are quad-core processors, but obviously the latter is more expensive. My question is this: What advantages does the Phenom have over the Athlon, and is it worth the extra $10?

No its not.
Athlon 2 has no L3 cache they are the same archs.
Get the Phenom 2.
Get a Phenom II, the L3 makes a great difference in performance.
