The rumored specifications look almost exactly the same as the GTX 670, just with a 192-bit memory bus and a lower TDP of only 150W. Hopefully these are the real specs, as for $300 that sounds like it would be a real winner!
Why are they trying to up the mainstream prices? Come on Nvidia/AMD, I don't want to pay more than double the price of the card that is supposed to be replacing my current card.

Well both take some wins and some loses.
I say go off toms benchmarks when they come out or anandtechs.

Given the specs, I would imagine it to be quite a fair price. This is more of a low-high end card rather than a high-mid range card.

Given the specs, it fits into the replacement category. Replacements are supposed to offer better performance for the same price, not better performance for twice the freaking cost.

I honestly don't know what the **** you're going on about.
Explain to me how it is a replacement card, what it is replacing, and why?
The HD 6870 was the successor (even though they janked up the naming) to the 5770, and they were to fill the $239-249 gap.
Now the HD 7870 has a laughable MSRP. $350. That is no longer in the mainstream price point, but it is still a mainstream card.
The model numbers are simply arbitrary numbers that represent a certain card. Basically you're saying that no matter what, x60 cards will always be mainstream cards. This is not the case. They are moving towards being low-high end cards, for which $300 is a nice price. Given the current trends of Kepler, we should see a fairly powerful 650 Ti sooner or later to fill the mainstream gap. Sure, the x60 cards might be getting more expensive, but we're also seeing lower end cards get more powerful. Also remember that this is the launch price. Nvidia will more than likely have to drop prices at some point to compete with AMD.
You're also failing to account for pricing cuts, particularly with the 6870 debate. The 6870 goes for about $180 max now, and I've seen it down in the $150 range quite often.
The MSRP is always much higher then the release pricing on cards.
I think I said this when the 680 came out that the 660ti is not going to be the budget monster the 560ti was because Nvidia cut the whatever compute part out for the whole deal rather then just the 560ti and below.
Nvidia has had production issues too and I assume AMD has had some too both being on TSMC this also leading to higher pricing.

If the model numbers were arbitrary, then they would be useless. Ever since the naming change to GTX X00, the X60 has always been mainstream. Unless they start breaking the model numbers into 5s (or do stupid things like adding Ti), there isn't much room for any other cards.
They won't have to drop their prices to compete with AMD; it is the other way around.
I did not fail to accommodate appropriate price cuts, as I strictly compared MSRPs. If I were to include the price cuts, I would have to include a time frame for that, which would jack up the older cards' pricing because they are no longer in production.
Maybe I'm just expecting too much in terms of price. Meh.

Discuss.
We'll have to wait and see. If it performs well for the price, it may.
They might release a plain old 660 later on, like they did with the 560.
Depending on the performnace of it we could see a price drop of the 7950.
Then we could see a price war and everyone wins.
Tada!
Seems to be slightly better than a 580.

I'm just complaining that the mainstream cards are no longer at mainstream prices. All the cards above the $200 price point should be ~$100 cheaper.

There's your higher price:performance.
The GTX 460 was to fill the $199-229 price gap.
The GTX 560 Ti had an MSRP of $250.
Now the GTX 660 Ti is going to be for $300. Do you not see how that is ********?
Or how about on the AMD side of things? It gets even worse for each generation gap.
The HD 5770 had an MSRP of $159.
