It happened to be that the business kinda' type card I kept in this computer didn't turn the screen on.
So I have the ol' radeon HD pro 2400 upstairs in a wooden box. It was 2GB ddr2.
The new one I have on the way is this one:
Zotac PCI Express Video Card ZT-71301-20L
I have a few questions I guess since the last graphics card I had lasted 10 or so years:
Where would I go to look at motherboard compatibility n such?
Should I be looking toward a smoother gameplay with the new one?
The old one was 2GB ddr2, the new one 1GB ddr3. The core clock speed on the new one I'm getting is 954 MHz
rather than the 800 MHz the ddr2 had, but I would like to know more about how allocating memory to minecraft goes with the RAM and stuff like that.
If I have 1GB on the graphics card and 4GB ram, can I still allocated 1.2GB of RAM to minecraft or would I be topped at giving the application 1GB?
Any info on the card I'm getting is welcomed.
Saved the stuff from my mods and bing searches for a little over 2 years to get it, should be here 'bout friday. Til' then I'm on a VGA monitor :] ,\/..
I've got a dell motherboard. Quad core 2.
I looked at the website to see if there were drivers for vista 32 bit and there was.
DDR3>DDR2, 1GB VRAM isn't as much as 2GB but for Minecraft it shouldn't make any difference. Also, RAM=/=VRAM, changing graphics card doesn't change how or how much you allocate to Minecraft, as "allocating" refers to system memory, not video. It'll also likely be compatible with anything current, given it has PCIe.
Also, that card is very, very slow. Here is is in comparison to what's considered a low-end option for games nowadays:

Yeah, haven't got it hooked up to a TV or anything but I'm able to play league smoother now.
The shader stuff on minecraft was new to me also. The lighting is kinda' nicer. DDR2 doesn't really have the same shader abilities that DDR3 does.
DDR2 can do shader stuff, don't get me wrong. But it aint as smooth lookin' as the DDR3.
It was kinda' like experiencing that "vanilla feel" again kinda' sorta'. The lighting looks alright though.
Downloaded defiance too, checked it out for a bit. Its kinda' neat. The boss fights are as cool as the 4 wheeler and not being able to equip some of the weapons I get sucks.
The DDR2 on games such as league, was a bit rougher around the edges. The screen could have a ripple on it and the appearance was more ps1.
I'm glad I was able to get a new graphics card.
I could have went with DDR4-5 or something but my OS is vista.
DDR3 was what I had to look at for going from vista to a more up to date OS.
I got hope for the new OS thing going on with microsoft, linux, and google, n' the team.
I'm being patient to see how that goes.

The difference between DDR2 and DDR3 isn't magical. It's more to do with ram clock speed, but even then it wouldn't be that much of a difference.
Graphics cards with DDR3 tend to be newer and therefore more powerful. Same thing goes with computers.

Or a mid-range option:
K95 RGB / Logitech G502 PS / Alienware AW3418DW / ViewSonic XG2703-GS / Sennheiser HD 598
That card is extremely weak and outdated, very poor purchase imo
Why am I here

Well, I got the graphics card with something that could be seen as currency, I didn't buy it with money, and it was on discount.
