I made a newly built computer yesterday. I powered on the PSU and hit the power button on the case to power on the computer. Smoke emanated from the back of the motherboard from behind where the CPU is, and I unplugged the PSU immediately. It had a very strong smell of burning electronics.
I browsed online for answers, checked that I didn't use excessive thermal paste, double checked that nothing was stuck inside any connectors, made sure all connectors are in very snug, and made sure that no standoffs or screws could be causing shorting of any traces or components.
I have also sent an email to Newegg and ASRock. Newegg says that the most they can try to do is send me a replacement, and I haven't heard back from ASRock yet.
Here is an image showing the burning caused at the back of the motherboard, behind where the CPU is. (The greenish metal is the mount for the CPU cooler, which has non-conductive standoffs).
Case power button, reset button, HDD light, power light, etc.
SATA 1TB HDD
2 x 4GB Ram sticks
I've put parts together before, but this is my first *real* computer build. These parts were selected by me and a friend (who has built many computers of his own) to ensure compatibility. I installed all the parts following online guides as well as the provided handbooks for each individual part.
I apologize that this isn't too exciting, but I'm sure some of you could use a break from people asking for a build that will, or asking if a build will run Minecraft.
When smoke starts coming off the system, yea, it's fried lol. Just let NewEgg ship you a replacement. It's not like you really have an alternative anyway. The system configuration isn't an issue; putting the wrong speed or brand RAM in or choosing the wrong hard drive isn't going to cause catastrophic failure like that.
I looked under the CPU and found that a power pin was being shorted. I straightened it out and now there's no smoke or singeing, but the computer won't display any BIOS messages on the screen. Newegg refuses to provide a replacement for me, so maybe I should turn straight to ASRock. Any hints as to a fix I could do?
Well, if it burned it's probably just done. A processor is a very complex piece of hardware, you can't torch part of it and expect to buff that out, lol.
So here's a short story of what happened...
