I'm wanting to try my hand at building a computer rather than purchasing one already assembled, perhaps learning something in the process. So from what little I've learned so far I've put this together. I'm aiming for something middle of the road, as I play various games and run various programs for work. Work related programs run fine on my current dinosaur computer, so anything extra is gravy for playing some games that have come out more recently.
Do these parts complement the build? Or is one overkill compared to the others? One of the areas of confusion is on the video card, as they still all seem to be a jumble of numbers in their spec numbers. Is the one selected adequate or should I be looking for something in particular?
Yes, while the R7 240 does have 2GB of ram, it is severley outdates in comparison to the i5 6600 and is a weak card at that. It's even lower powered than my potato graphics card from 3 years ago, which was mediocre back then.
You might have to invest a little more in a better graphics card if you are looking to play more demanding games. I would give a shout out to reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace for help, just ask nicely :-)
Also please be aware the i5-6600 isn't overclockable, if you want to overclock in the future, especially with that fancy heatsink you should consider getting one with a K at the end, mine is a i5-3570k for example.
I ended up stepping it up to a 2GB R7 370, as I wasn't willing to go all the way with the R9s quite yet for a first attempt. I don't know how intense of a card I'd even utilize, so hopefully my selection will handle whatever I throw at it.
I originally selected a K identifier, before I was aware what that even meant. I have no interest or even idea of how to overclock so I purposely went with a non-K CPU. No point in paying extra for something to be capable of something I have no idea about doing. Thanks for putting that out there though.
I learned that the CPUs generally come packaged with a stock heat sink, but wanted to go for more of a reliable build, so I figured more efficient and effective cooling at only a couple extra bucks... eh, why not? Maybe some of that extra CFMs from the heat sink fan will help the over all airflow through the case, I don't know.
But overall thanks for even responding. With the amount of hooting and hollering that seems to go on over component selection on this and other forums, I thought there would have been more people itching to sound off over this. I've already tweaked some of the components selected and ordered them up. They should all be hitting my mailbox sometime near the end of this week. Then the circus begins. Maybe I'll post the macabre process that will be me trying to put it together and get it to work.
It's too late now. The parts are ordered and most have already arrived.
And 950 means what?
The PSU is one of the items I changed before ordering after I figured I wanted a modular to avoid ten pounds of cable stuffed in the bottom of the case and a better efficiency rating. Otherwise EVGA G2 means diddily to me.
It's more helpful to go into a bit more detail with your reasons and experiences for the benefit of others who might be in the process and trying to glean something from this.

Here's a GTX950
It's generally regarded as a pretty good card. Like a 750ti just newer. It works well, fits most cases and psus and gets the job done. Can cost around $150 ish.
Ahhh, gotcha. Thanks. How far down the food chain is the 2GB R7 370 from this? I think I picked one up made by Asus.
The model also mention it was crossfire capable, so would picking up another one, and figuring out how to get them to tag team my video demands be worth it if I don't feel my needs are being met, or would attempting to return this one and picking up something further up into the R9 line be a surer bet?
I'd turn that CPU cooler around 90deg to exhaust out the rear. Currently it's blowing heated air directly on the PCB of your graphics card.
Otherwise, looks good.
It struck me as strange for it to be pointed that way, but I just followed the picture on the instructions.
I'll have to look into turning it then. I don't have any thermal paste to apply if I tear it off. Does it make a funky mess if I do and how important is it to put another bead of paste down if I move it to vent properly?
So far from the desktop dashboard its stabilized at 58 degrees Celsius, and the graphics card fans have yet to kick on. Not sure if they are metered or I didn't hook it up correctly. But I also haven't pushed anything across the screen more intensive than some web based drivers updating...
Well so far this rig runs nicely, from the limited amount of time I have been able to mess with it. It zips right along through Minecraft on the highest settings as well as a few newer releases off of Steam. Work and life keeps me quite busy so I haven't had much time to fully sit down and tinker with it, but so far I am already satisfied with my results.

Stock cooler will do fine. You don't need a aftermarket cooler if not overclocking.
Get a better GPU, such as 950. It is unbalanced compared to CPU.
The PSU is a ticking time bomb. Get an EVGA G2 Power supply or something.

I'd much rather have one newer, more powerful card than an SLI of two older models.
Well it took me nearly 5 hours to get to this point. Let's see if it'll fire up.
Even if it doesn't, I'm kinda proud of myself for blindly stumbling through this and ending up with something that sort of looks like a computer.
