My box is getting a bit old, I think it's time to upgrade. I bought it in 2009 and upgraded it here and there over the years. I used to keep up to date on hardware and geek out on all that kind of stuff, but that was like six years or so ago lol. So I'm out of the loop on what's what nowadays. This is my current rig:
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 mobo
Core i7 920 CPU @ 4.01ghz
12GB Corsair DDR3 PC3-12800
Geforce GTX 970
2 OCZ ARC-100 240GB SSDs in RAID0
1 Seagate 3TB drive for extra room
Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250W PSU
Thermaltake Shark case
I'd like to stick with an ASUS mobo if possible, I've used a lot of their products and they seem decent and reliable. I want to bump the RAM up to 16 GB at least (I use several VMs). I'll repurpose my hard drives, PSU, case and video card. I spend most of my PC time in either my browser for Visual Studio. The only games I play are Minecraft, Minecraft Story Mode, older Source engine stuff, really old Battlefield (1942:DC) so I imagine I can stick with the 970.
So I guess what I need is a recommendation on the PC's "heart", heh: mobo/CPU/RAM. Oh, and I'd like to start ripping Bluray and the occasional DVD, so whatever would be best to reduce the time to encode would be nice. Thanks.
Prefer to stay under a grand. I don't think I'll mess around with OC this time, stock will be fine. What about i7s, are they still the higher line option? Would a more beefy CPU help with the encoding? If so, I'd rather spend more and get something that will save me time. I hate having to wait forever for encodes to get done, heh.
If you're not interested in overclocking, you can't go wrong with an i7 6700 with an ASUS Z170 mobo and 16GB 2133MHz DDR4 RAM. In Australia it came to about $930 which is around $674 US. If you were willing to use most of the money, you could probably get the 6700K (just in case in the future you want to OC) with a watercooler.
Also, I mean, with that budget... all I'm going to say is 950 pro m.2... do with that as you will.

Also, just sayin', that 970 isn't old nor crappy, so you should stick with it anyways. The 970 is in the sweet-spot for price-to-performance when it comes to higher end cards.

Budget? A Skylake i5 + 16GB DDR4 + mobo will run you around $350-$450 depending if you wanna OC or nah
