Recently I have been redoing my room, and I was wondering what people thought would happen if we rigged a 150 ft Ethernet or cat5e cable from our downstairs router to my room upstairs. The reason is because our wireless isn't incredible, but our Ethernet is great: 314 mbps down, 344 up. What I need is to have good connection speeds, like I do where my build is 10 feet from the router. Thanks!

Cat5e is fine for lengths up to 100m (328 ft) or so, after which it gets unreliable. So long as you have a gigabit port in either end you should be fine, but it may be worth installing cat6 to future proof and potentially get a more reliable gigabit throughput.
Having a wired connection over wireless is well worth the effort, even more so if you have internet as fast as yours.
For that length, you might want to install an Ethernet relay, if they're reasonably cheap. Or if they even exist, let's just say I don't know anything about that subject.

Thanks everyone! So Xiae, is it worth paying the extra for cat6 over cat5e? And also how do you check if you have a gigabit port? Our router is a Verizon fios one with a few extenders so the WiFi can reach the whole house.

Are you going to just run the cable down the stairs or similar, or install it properly into the wall with proper wallplates? If the latter option, go with cat6 to save from replacing it in the future, otherwise just go with cat5e.

I'm not entirely sure. We were thinking of running it through holes in the wall but we never considered wallplates.

Wallplates would be a better idea then just punching a hole straight into the wall, especially because you only have to do it once, and they just look a ton better (you're doing most of the work anyways to put it into a wall, may as well just do it all while you're already in there)

A 150 ft cable run is fine.

OK so if it should be cat6, is this ok? http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-Cat6-Network-Ethernet-Cable/dp/B00139SOWS
Or cat5e? http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-Cat5e-Network-Ethernet-Cable/dp/B00139XJ5A
Is it worth the extra money for the cat6?
