Maybe headphones aren't the best topic for a gaming forum, but oh well. After a couple of years working with an old Corsair headset, I've decided to buy a new pair of headphones (that means I don't need a microphone). However, I'm not at all an expert in audio nor audio brands, so I could use some help. My current headset is rather clunky, sounds pretty good but sadly from extended use at a desk the cable (which is pretty long) has started to wear down considerably, despite being designed for durability. This means that at times one of the ears cuts out (seems to happen to every pair...)
Anyway, this is what I'd be looking for, if I were to buy a new pair:
Sound quality: I'm no audiophile, but I would expect quality sound with high fidelity. No need for excessive bass, I want to be able to hear as much as possible at once without one part of the audio drowning out another. I'll be listening to both music and games, so I need a well-balanced sound.
Noise cancelling: Not completely necessary, but is an added bonus. Over-ear is most likely necessary as my current headset is over-ear, and I like this blocks out sound.
Durability: This is important. I'm only sitting at a desk for the majority of the time, but the longer cabled headphones always manage to get damaged easily in my environment. They always manage to either be rolled on the floor and under swivel chair wheels, or bent at the jack, or a small split in the wire et cetera. This means I'm going to need a durable pair with a wire that isn't too long.
Price: I'm looking for the sub-£50 mark, but I don't want to sacrifice quality for a very low price. Take into consideration that I am on a budget, but it's not completely strict.
Comfort: Yes please. The headset I'm wearing right now is not very comfortable, it's big and clunky. I want something with some weight to it, so I know it's on my head, and something which doesn't feel horribly cheap, but I don't want anything too heavy either, and they should fit well over my ears.
I'd prefer to buy headphones without a microphone, as I already have a microphone. Seems like a waste of money to buy a headset with an extra microphone I'm not going to use.
I won't be taking these outside, I have buds for that. I don't mind a little heavy (as the OP says I want to know they're there but not be burdened by them being on my head). I'd like as little noise leakage as possible.
I'd recommend Audio Technica as a company, but I use a pair of Koss PortaPros for my PC usage, they are really comfortable. I got mine from ebay for about £15 manufacturer refurbished, they still work well.

Even if so, I'd still be paying for a microphone I don't need. Surely I could get better audio quality for the same price without a mic?
To be honest, at their current price they're amazing, all the accessories you get with them are amazing too. I have a second mic too which I use mostly, but them imagine if your desktop mic breaks, you then have a backup.

Speaking of headphones, all the cheap ones I get seem to break within a week or so, either by one side not working correctly, or the plug pops out or something like that. Try to avoid cheap ones unless you're risky or willing to buy cheap ones every week or so, or you don't mind them not working correctly.

See, that's what I'm trying to avoid most of all. Problem is, a lot of the time I even find that pretty expensive headphones will eventually do the same thing (a £50 pair I had broke after the left ear cut out).

My advice is get headphones with a removable cable since most of my experiences with broken headphones involved a crappy cable.

+1 to this. I've replaced the cable on my Sennheiser HD 439s multiple times due to chew damage (cats), and they're still going strong. $5 for a cable is a lot cheaper than new heaphones.

Best headphones I've ever bought. And they're £51
Made from Aluminium and it goes right over your ears, I hear next to no noise through them.
