Hey everybody. So, my 2010 Macbook is beginning to show its limitations, and so begins the search for a new laptop. I'd appreciate your advice.
So DaBomb, how much of a cheapskate are you? My budget is $700-$1100 USD. I'd prefer pay more for a better laptop, rather than cutting costs.
Where are you located?
Australia. However, I have access to shipping within the US and stores in Los Angeles.
How big do you want your rig? I would like the screen to be at least 12 inches and at most 16 inches. I'll be carrying it around a lot, so I'd prefer it to be no heavier than 6lbs.
Preferred (or not) Brands?
I'd rather not stick with Apple, as I'll most likely need Windows programs in the future, and even though I can use (and have used) Bootcamp, Apple hardware tends to only be good at running Apple software. My parents each have an Asus, and they have never had issues.
How do you plan to use it?
You know, Hacking into the CIA, DDOSing government websites, selling endangered animals on the deep web, Viewing 'educational' videos, the usual.
In all seriousness, I plan to both work and play on it. Here is a list of programs I plan to run:
AutoCAD
Matlab, with Simulink
MS Office
Minecraft
Terraria
TBOI: Rebirth
I should throw in a modern game, just so
Various multimedia
Surfing up some sick web
Probably some music making software somewhere down the track
Looking at some system requirements, I'd say that at least 8GB of RAM and 2GB of video, plus a quad-core processor would be alright. I don't know, I'm not one to make an accurate judgement.
If it lasts more than four hours, should you call a doctor?
I take a two hour train trip each way to uni and back, and I have access to power at either end, so a battery that lasts at least four hours during regular use should be fine (say, 6000 mAh).
When are you buying it, and what is your preferred lifespan?
I will be buying it in the space between the beginning next week and the beginning of next year. I'd like it to last at least five years.
How much hard could a hard drive drive if a hard drive could drive hard? My current 250GB drive only causes minor inconvenience, so a 320GB or 500GB drive should be fine. I can easily do without an SSD.
I spin you right round baby, right round like a record baby? No, I don't need a CD drive. I have one which I can just plug in.
Wireless Capability?
Decent Wi-Fi is crucial, something that I'll definitely need. Bluetooth would be nice, but not too important.
But DaBomb, you should build a PC. It'll be much cheaper, have more options, etc. I'm very aware of that. I'd like to build one sometime down the track, just not right now. I'd rather not have to fight over the uni computers, and having a computer that I can use on the train adds four hours of potential study time for each day I go to uni. I promise I'll come back and ask for your advice when I decide to build a PC.

Thank you for you time, everybody.
You're perfect, sweet cheeks.
Yeah, I've been looking at Y40's and Y50's, and they both have really positive reviews. I'll keep looking though.
It's got a 1TB hybrid drive and a quad core Intel Core i7 4710MQ coupled with a tasty Nvidia GTX 860M with a sprinkle of 8GB of Corsair Vengance.
Sorry I'm learning to write actually decent stories atm.
