I have 64 bit JRE7 on a 64 bit computer. I want to allocate more RAM than 1GB as it causes lag when Minecraft is using say 75%. I'm using Magic Launcher and when I go into setup and try to use more than 1024MB, Minecraft doesn't launch.
If Minecraft is using more than 1GB of memory you are doing something wrong. Your problems are caused by something else.
What? How am I doing something wrong? I want to allocate MORE RAM. I've done it before in 1.5.2 and nothing went wrong. A lot of people actually use 2 Gigs or more for Minecraft.
The point he is making is that there should be no reason you need to use even 1 gig of ram. The amount Minecraft loads in for vanilla isn't enough to fill that amount of memory.
Just by the way, I use quite a few mods (20 to be precise), but most of them don't have an effect on my RAM at all. Most of them only add new items and ores like Simple Ores and Netherrocks. I even used the Vanilla 1.6.2 profile and when I was in a flat world (not superflat), it had massive lag and it used up +- 95% of my 1 gig, so there must be some other problem. I had fast graphics and normal render distance, because anything less than that I'll get swarmed by mobs that I can't even see. Can someone please just respond with help telling me HOW to allocate MORE RAM, because when I try to use more than 1024 MB Minecraft doesn't open (like I said in the main post). Please don't tell me that "most people don't need more than 1 GB of RAM" because I'm one of the people that does need more.

Incorrect. Depends on your graphics settings. When I have everything on max (except for view bobbing being off and advanced openGL being on (Which reduces the amount of graphics it takes up)), Windows task manager says MC routinely hangs around 1.1 gig of RAM used.
Not exactly sure what to say as far as how to allocate more though, I've never allocated RAM to MC except when I host servers or am using a modpack launcher and it all works out fine.

As far as I know, if you uncheck the box to allow you to allocate a specific amount of RAM to MC, then it won't reserve any for it, but instead it'll use however much it needs.

For backwards time travel to be possible, wouldn't every instant in the universe have to be stored somewhere, or time to be something physical you could travel through? Either way doesn't work with the current laws of physics.
That statement more or less invalidated your whole post because you showed you know more or less nothing about MC's engine.
Advanced OpenGL is not something MC created. It makes it so that only visible graphics would be shown, for instance, in MC, if you were in a completely enclosed room, no windows, no way to look out, the only things that would render would be the edges of the blocks that you can see. It is optional to use it in MC, and because it renders less it uses less video processing, and takes up less video RAM. Incase that's not enough for you, go look it up yourself, I can't be bothered to be everyone's teacher.

The name is created by Minecraft. It's called Occlusion Culling, and since it's actually not really an "advanced" feature (since it was added to OGL over 10 years ago) The name is a source of confusion, especially for those who make the assumption that it requires a better Graphics card (if you set Graphics Detail to "Advanced" in a game you expect it to require more oomph, and yet this has the opposite effect).
It is optional to use it in MC, and because it renders less it uses less video processing, and takes up less video RAM.
It uses less Graphical Oomph because the game sends fewer vertices to the render pipeline. However in order to filter the vertices outside of the view frustrum the game has to perform calculations using the System CPU. If Minecraft does it properly, it should be enabling a Depth Buffer and rendering all opaque objects from front to back (closer to farther away). Ice and water use Alpha Blending which requires a second pass and needs to be rendered back to front, after all opaque objects are drawn.
I don't think that Minecraft does this. The second part certain isn't happening; if that was the case you would be able to see water through a portal or through ice.
You certainly act like a teacher, what with your obnoxious attitude trying to prove a point that's already been disproven a million times.
Minecraft does not use over 1 GB of memory except in extreme circumstances. You're just going off your own personal experience and trying to make it seem like fact.

1. You're the one who starts it all off with a bad attitude
2. How is info about Advanced openGL "Disproven a million times"?
3. I play MC with task manager open, it doesn't ever drop below 1 GB of memory. Ever. Even with no mods.
4. You have a bad definition of the word fact. Saying "The sky is purple", is a fact. A fact is anything that can be proven true or false, whether or not it is.
Maybe you should check your info before you post.

Uh, how?

That was referring to memory.

Then you must have screwed something up as I'm running a 256x texture pack with shaders and multiple mods and am currently at 558 MB of memory usage.

Looks like we're getting info from different sources. I'm using task manager, which, as always, is actively showing a few meg above one gig. You're obviously using the f3 button. Besides, many people have said how it takes up more than 1 gig. "Disproven" would mean that it was proven to never take place on any PC. Is there anything else, or will that be it for today?

When task manager (On my PC) reports MC as using 1 gig of memory, MC reports a usage of 250 MB, which without having ever seen anyone else's numbers for these two would lead to the logical conclusion of MC reporting about 1/4 of the RAM it is actually using. I now see that the amount it doesn't report Varies PC to PC. Also I see I might have a memory problem, because my skype uses 100 MB of memory, while yours uses 41 MB of memory. Also my catalyst control center is using 8 times the RAM yours is. Few possibilities: Your PC is reporting less than it is using, or my PC uses far more RAM to do everything yours does.

I went into the Magic Launcher setup and I ticked the box that read "Maximised" and I now have 2.5 Gigs for Minecraft, I'm not exactly sure what you were talking about but thank goodness you said that, now I don't have to lag so terribly.

If you are using mods, that's a different story.
"Programmers never repeat themselves. They loop."
Sir, might I welcome you into my FTB world? 4 dimensions actively loaded, with several areas in each.
"Programmers never repeat themselves. They loop."
I regularly use over 2 gigs just playing on an ftb server.
I specifically said in Vanilla.
Mods can use far more depending on the intensity and quantity.
