Recently, a problem rose where if I plugged my iPhone 4 into the front USB ports, my PC would shut off completely.
I've done a bit of Googling but I haven't found anything helpful. Most of the answers say it's my PC, even though possible, isn't very likely. My computer is pretty high-end (Specs in signature) and some answers even say that my iPhone is sucking too much out of my power supply, even though I have an 850W PSU which is more than enough to power my PC and my iPhone.
I don't know whether anyone else has encountered this problem, but it's pretty frustrating since I can't sync my iPhone and put more songs on it.
did you try plugging it in the backplane? if that works it might be something that short it out? which results in the PC shutting off?
also, does this happen with other USB devices?
Heh, turns out it was a problem with the front ports.. Never thought about trying the rear ports since I tried plugging my iPhone into the USB port through my Razer BlackWidow Ultimate and still my PC shut off.
did you change anything to your system configuration which "resulted" in this happening? did you change any cables in the case? seems like something might not be connected properly..
or could just have been a short circuit which damaged the front usb ports, or where they connect to the motherboard. happened to me before.
I'd have to guess it is a short as well with the front ports. There's no real other reason this would happen, save for a driver issue, but phones are detected as mass storage devices by the PC (which I've never heard of having problems with driver-wise), so there really shouldn't be an issue there.
Luckily, if it's the hub itself and not the front panel header, it'll be pretty cheap and easy to replace.
Fix 1: Everything everyone else said.
Fix 2: it doesn't matter if the other advice worked or not, but please throw that phone on concrete with maximum force multiple times over, and then go buy a Samsung Galaxy S3. You don't realize how restrictive an iPhone is until you've given Android a good, long, usage session (and i don't mean just browsing the internet, I mean actually messing around with settings and features. One thing I do all the time on my android is download audio files off the interwebs to play in the Music app, which is done entirely from the phone. Can't do that on some **** iPhone.)
Jesus christ, it's just an iphone, let the dude use it if he likes it, he came here asking for advice on a hardware issue, not for people to pick at an unrelated choice of phone.
OP, it looks a lot like your pc is having trouble supplying a lot of power to the front USB ports, or there may be a short somewhere (less likely if its only higher powered devices causing this to happen).
Try a different header on your mobo if possible, double check your power connectors to the mobo and maybe even test another PSU or case (that is, just test a different cases' usb header (you should be able to do that without having to swap the guts)

I would be really surprised if it was undervolt from the USB ports, I mean it uses the 5V rail so its possible the PSU could be shutting down if the rail system was faulty but considering the back ports work fine that's not really likely. More likely it's some kind of short in the connector wire.

I've seen some really weird **** happening with USB headers including stuff like this, it really could be coming from anywhere

I just don't see how it could be related to power draw. Considering the connectors go to the motherboard it's quite possible its a short with the board, with the connectors, or with the wire. Kind of hard to diagnose without hands on testing though.
well i think the only way to figure out what happened is to get an exact same build and do it on that or test it on another pc
otherwise idk i never plugged my iPod (2nd gen) into my pc it has its own charger
and like everyone else said its going to be difficult to find out what happened
I have no idea why they have so many issues, especially when it's voltage related.
It's literally just pins and a wire.
I mean ffs, the least complex part of the computer has the most problems. Why?
Even things that use the USB headers like card readers have these problems.
My computer refused to boot while my printer was plugged in a while back. I didn't know what was wrong, I actually cried thinking the motherboard fried or something (it just froze at the BIOS screen). Eventually, i started pulling out wires while it was on, and upon removing the printer's USB placed into the front panel USB, the screen flashed through some sort of terminal output, rebooted, and worked fine. Printer has not been plugged in since.
I actually crashed someone's laptop plugging in my external Seagate drive. Try different ports maybe?
(Off-topic: OP, your build sucks, I don't really know why you got a Powercolor card and an i7. In addition, your PSU is overkill, the case is overpriced & why would you get 16 GB of value RAM?)
My laptop won't get past POST with any USB devices other than a mouse plugged in.. I honestly thought my phone killed it one time.. then I unplugged it and it started..

I can't spell, don't shoot me for it! Computer: Intel i5 2500k (Not overclocked for now) 8GB DDR3, 60GB agility3 SSD, 1TB 7200rpm storage, HIS-AMD HD6870. 3 1080p Screens, and one 17 inch, running on the HD3000 and the 6870.
I have a question as I am having the same issue also with my windows 10 PC Intel core i3 8gb ram. Just as soon as I plug in my phone which is an HTC One m7 android device inside the USB port in the back of the PC, the computer immediately shuts off, not shut or power down but I mean the power of the PC just clicks off immediately. Now that seems to be the only device the PC does that with. I plugged my iphone 5s inside of the the same USB port in the back of the PC and it works without any issues. So with that being said may be my htc phone has a defect? or may be Should I configure the PC settings some how? I'm not really sure so I'm open for some ideas please.
There might be a problem with your iPhone, it could be virus infection, I don't know. But you'd better back up your iPhone or you can transfer data to other devices. Maybe you can follow this: how to transfer data from phone to phone. You can choose to transfer data from iPhone to iPhone, or to Android, it depends on what devices you have. But in general, you can transfer between iOS, Android and Symbian.

There is the problem. The PC doesn't like iPhones.
It's Apple, what do you expect?
