I posted a topic here a while back about getting a new graphics card. Most suggested I upgrade a few things before attempting to install a card, and I have done this. I now have a much larger case and a 750 W power supply. Now that I am more prepared, Can anyone recommend a card based on my needs and setup?
I also have 4 GB of ram, but I'm willing to upgrade to the maximum 8 GB if necessary.
Ideally, I want to the card to allow me to use the more popular graphical mods for minecraft like the water shaders mod and the GLSL shaders mod. Failing that, I'd at least like a card that is a noticeable improvement over the integrated graphics on the motherboard.
Your processor isn't that great, and you probably got a case that is way too above your specs. Rather, you should have gotten a cheaper case to invest in the actual performance specs. What's done is done though, and the 600T is a great case. Also, what PSU do you have? Your processor is good enough for minecraft, but not the shaders. I would invest in the CPU and motherboard before going for a GPU.
Woah, that kind of case is for computers that are rather expensive. With that you probably won't even run Minecraft smoothly, let alone the GLSL shaders.
Ya that CPU sucks what kind of dumbass would have a triple core Athlon2. It can't play any games at all defiantly not ultra BF3 with AA turned up with a oced 6970.
Whats you budget? Also do you play any other games then MC.
any decent graphics cards will make almost everything else bottleneck. if you really want to be serious with GLSL and more FPS, you might want to consider just getting a new system.

That CPU sucks its not never going to run Minecraft ever.
Desktop AMD athlon2 x3 3.6ghz
AMD 6970
Ram 8gigs 1333mhz
1.5TB of hardrive space
1440x900
What is your budget for the video card? I would consider the Radeon HD 68**/78**/79** or the Nvidia GTX660ti/670.
The processor could potentially unlock an additional core though. Try poking around in the BIOS for core unlock/core control. Overclocking could lessen the bottleneck, but only if your motherboard is up to it and you have decent aftermarket cooling. It will be difficult due to the locked multiplier however.
And please can we all stop telling the OP their CPU sucks. He asked about a new video card, not how good his processor is.

1440x900? The standard of benchmarking, right?
EDIT: Wanted to add that buying anything more than a 6850 for his rig is just stupid. No offense Xaanos, but your upgrade option to a 6970 on that rig was quite bad. The 6970 fails in price:performance. Even at 1920x1080p, you don't need anything more than a 6950.

My point is he can get a low end card and run mc fine and the water shadder mod probably fine due to how unoptimized the glsl shadder mod is and how picky it can be on hardware he probably won't.
Never said he should I am still waiting on a budget.
Really people bitching about my GPU again you guys do realize I have had this for quite a while now I think I have explained the story many many many many times. In fact I got it before I joined the curse forums.
Sorry I haven't answered any questions lately, anyway, I get it that my processor isn't t3h r0xx0rz or anything like that. I didn't know what I wanted to do with the computer when I built it, it was just a fun thing to do while between graduation and getting a job. Now that I know I want to make it a gaming rig, I've been slowly upgrading it.
I've already unlocked the 4th core. The MB made that super easy. As for overclocking, I'm still using the stock cooler, and I don't feel like getting a new one, so if that's necisary to safely overclock it than I'm not going to bother.
My budget is around $100-200. I understand that's very much an entry level price range for graphics cards, but if i can get something that would noticeably improve my experience over the built in graphics even if I can't use the shaders mod than that's OK. Bonus points if the card is nice enough to keep around if/when I upgrade the MB and processor while staying within the means of my current processor.

What do you mean you've unlocked the 4th core? There is no 4th core to unlock
BTW I'm looking to spend between $100-200.

Here's what I have:
MOTHERBOARD:
BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU:
AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor ADX455WFGMBOX

On an unrelated side note, can someone tell me how I'm supposed to hook up the fans to the fan controller on the case? Both the connectors on the fans and the controller are female. Here's the model:
Corsair Special Edition White Graphite Series 600T Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Thinking about coming a mod to simply not moderate.
Mean time, a budget would be better to work with.

Your screenshot shows severe bottlenecking. What's the point in having a 6970 if you can't get all the performance out of it?

Ya there is the Athlon2s are broken phenom 2 chips.
