So my two anceint oem speakers are starting to show their age after about 9 years, so I think its time for an upgrade. Basically anything is an upgrade for me, so yeah. I want something preferably under $40, that has good sound quality and build quality. I have been looking at these, how good are they?
Or should I just save up for a vengeance 1500 headset? Been wanting one of those, but I don't want to have to put them on to listen to videos and such. But I could see how much life I could milk from my current speakers, so yeah.
I have a vengeance 1500 headset and I love it...
I only have shitty dell speakers to compare it to though, but the sound quality with the 1500's is actually pretty damn good! I say you save up for them. The mike is crystal clear too.
Get a good pair of headphones and a mod mic or Zalman mic. The Samson SR850s are popular, or my favorites, the DJ100s. I also recommend the cheap ASUS Xonar DG with it. However it is not required. My perfect equation:
Koss Pro DJ100s + Xonar DG + Mod Mic
EDIT: well, actually, the Koss' are really only good for gaming if you have the ATH M50 pads, which cost $20 (i personally believe they are worth it). So the Samson might be a better option.

I don't need a mic though, I'm not making youtube videos. The built in mic will be just fine for chatting with friends.

Err, these don't come with a mic. These are high quality headphones, meaning you have to add a mic, which is relatively cheap. However, the advantages of using a headphone over a headset is better immersion, positioning, audio quality, etc. Headset drivers are usually subpar (PC360 aside, uses the same driver as the magnificent HD598). They generally come at a cheaper price point as well, ie the DJ100s or SR850s or the KCS75s. Add on mics are cheap as well.

I was considering getting the vengeance 1500s though, as everything I have read about them says they are good, as well as being $80 on amazon.

Tops the Vengeances. Why? The SR850 has superior drivers, better soundstage, and is cheaper, the Xonar DG has superior audio quality to the cheap little dolby dac that comes with the vengeances, and the Zalman mic is really good.
EDIT: This also happens to be the commonly bought together products on the SR850's amazon page.

$95 when bought together. Funny thing I just linked it. He could get the sound card later if he can't afford that ($70 without card)

The SR850 is cheaper on Newegg I think. Goes for about $50, so that would be about $85. Of course I check newegg, and the SR850 can only be bought with a mic for $87. Friggin' google shopping.

I'm not huge on super high quality sound, and getting headphones, a mic, and sound card sounds like a pain, plus all the clutter on my desk. I think I will buy myself the above speaker set in the OP, and then ask for the 1500s for my birthday next month.

I personally think that's a good idea. (given that I own 1500's and can vouch for them)
I have a feeling others here might disagree though but whatever, it's your money after all!

Whatever works for you, both the headset and headphones will take as much space on the desk and the high quality sound is just immersion and percision, both a must for gaming headsets/phones.

How are the lows on the 1500s? How about the mids? Recessed? Is the treble rolled off or fatiguing? Just wondering.

Thinking about coming a mod to simply not moderate.

i think the sound card supports Dolby Headphone same as the Vengance 1500s, so it would be artificial surround correct?

Off topic, but was wondering if someone would do a review on these, I'm too afraid to buy them:

I think these should become the new standard for gaming headphones.
Yes, but the DAC and amp in the sound card will be better at producing sound.

right, so basically it'll have the full surround of the 1500s, just much better sound quality if i'm understanding this right
