Is this a good computer for the price? I do a lot of programming for fun/school, and I need a good laptop that I can program on. I also need one that I can use for some hardcore gaming. I have nowhere to put a desktop, so building a good one is out of the question. The last computer that I had was an acer aspire 5515, and I shared it with my family. I used it until it died a couple of weeks ago, and I would like to get a better computer that would last for a while.

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary notation, those who don't, and those who think this is in binary.
This or this would be much better options on the performance side
If you do a lot of programming you might want to get a mechanical keyboard aside, preferably with MX Blue keyswitches.
Its an HP, so it will it burn you. Get a Sager or Asus, much better.

The Commies count their quarters and the ArtSci wish they could, the Engs have the longest pole and slam it home for good, so big, so hard, so tall, it reaches all the way to heaven, so shut your hole, we climbed the pole, we're sci 1 ing 7!!!
At that price you won't be doing any 'hardcore' gaming on a laptop. A 650m will play BF3 at about 60 fps on medium settings. You will probably need about a 670m or 680m to play BF3 on High.

Nobody's perfect, so neither is Hannah Montana Linux, but it's pretty great.

They all suck. They just suck differently. Sort of like prostitutes.
That's a really good computer... Don't know about hardcore gaming quite yet though. I'd give you some suggestions, but don't have the time to do it tonight. But when I get up I'll try to find something for you, and other people will probably put up some great suggestions too. Good luck!

Computer Specs: 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM- 320GB 5400RPM Hard Drive- Dual Core Intel Core i5 2415M @2.3 Ghz- Intel HD 3000 Graphics- Only $1200! Yeah, I got a Mac, because I'm stoopid. Scratch that: Intel i5 2500k, 1TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda, Gigabyte Z68-D3H-B3, 8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, Radeon HD 6850, Running OSX.
Thanks for the feedback. For me, a computer that I could play most games on, and not have 5-10 FPS would be well enough for me. The main thing is being able to program on it. As for a keyboard, I've used a laptop at home since I was eight, and I am used to using a laptop keyboard. If I need anything better than that, I can just buy it at the store then hook it up.

The only, and I repeat ONLY laptop brands that give you good hardware for a good price are Sager and ASUS. Every other company does things like this:
Overkill processor, no graphics card
Underkill everything, sold for high price
Extreme overkill everything, extremely overpriced
Horrible cooling *cough*HPandAlienware*cough*
Shittons of bloatware *cough*HP*cough*
Will break within a year, almost 99% guaranteed *cough*HPandAlienware*cough*
ASUS and Sager, as I said, are the only laptop brands you can really get a good machine from. Desktops would be much cheaper, especially if you build them, but since you don't have room, I feel sorry for you.
What is wrong with HP? I know that Alienware is a complete waste of money, but what about other laptops from HP?
Many things.
They choose very bad hardware, they RARELY put a graphics card in ANYTHING they make.
They have a ****ton of bloatware. It slows the computer down to about 5% of its potential speed out of the box.
The cooling is absolutely horrible. They will overheat and possibly kill the motherboard (that's what my mom's did), or at the very least melt your balls off.
Their screens have TOO. MUCH. GODDAMN. CONTRAST. I know you can turn it down, but it's just fugly when you leave it at default.
They're probably the next-worst brand over from Alienware, unless you count obscure foreign con artists.

you left out some MSI laptops in there, their gaming ones are pretty awesome as well

Thanks for the info. I never knew that HP was that bad. I think that my last computer died because it over heated.

About 75$ more than the other one you suggested, but this one is much better.
